Writings Papers of Andrew Johnson , 8 vols., ed. by L. P. Graf et al. (1967-90)
Died : July 31, 1875, Carter's Station, Tennessee Buried : Greeneville, Tennessee Consulting Editor Hans Trefousse, Brooklyn College, Emeritus Biography: A Life in Brief Andrew Johnson gives truth to the saying that in America, anyone can grow up to become President. Born in a log cabin in North Carolina to nearly illiterate parents, Andrew Johnson did not master the basics of reading, grammar, or math until he met his wife at the age of seventeen. The only other man to attain the office of President with so little formal education was Abraham Lincoln. Whereas Lincoln is esteemed as America's greatest President, Johnson, his successor, is ranked as one of the worst. After Andrew's father died, his mother and her new husband apprenticed fourteen-year-old Andrew and his older brother William to a local tailor. After serving a number of years in this trade, the boys ran away for several years, dodging rewards for their capture placed by their former employer. Andrew later returned to his mother, and the entire family moved west to Greeneville, Tennessee, where young Andrew set up shop as a tailor and met his wife, Eliza McCardle. Eliza educated Andrew and helped him make wise investments in town real estate and farmlands. When Johnson reached the White House, First Lady Eliza Johnson was a semi-invalid suffering from tuberculosis during her husband's term in office. She only made two public appearances during her entire stay in the executive mansion. Nevertheless, she operated behind the scenes with energy and tact and was fondly remembered by the White House staff.

After his father died when George was eleven, George's mother, Mary, a tough and driven woman, struggled to hold their home together with the help of her two sons from a previous marriage. Although he never received more than an elementary school education, young George displayed a gift for mathematics. This knack for numbers combined with his quiet confidence and ambition caught the attention of Lord Fairfax, head of one of the most powerful families in Virginia. While working for Lord Fairfax as a surveyor at the age of sixteen, the young Washington traveled deep into the American wilderness for weeks at a time.

(1969- ) Died : June 15, 1849, Nashville, Tennessee Buried : State Capitol Grounds, Nashville, Tennessee Consulting Editor Biography: A Life in Brief Under James Knox Polk, the United States grew by more than a million square miles, across Texas and New Mexico to California and even Oregon. More than any other President, Polk exercised "Manifest Destiny," a phrase coined by a magazine to express the conviction that the United States was entitled to rule as much of the continent as it could acquire. He successfully waged war against Mexico, and thereby obtained for the U.S. most of its present boundaries as a nation. A man of firm personal principles, he kept his word to retire after a single term, although he could easily have won reelection. Yet he is regarded today by most historians not as a great President but as one who missed opportunities. He may have been the last chief executive with enough voter support to have addressed the moral issue of slavery, but he failed to understand the depth of popular emotion over the westward expansion of the South's "peculiar institution." This failure on his part left the issue of slavery unaddressed and thus unresolved at the end of his term in 1849.

History Lesson Plans Teachers contribute their best lessons on the events and issues that they think are the most important in the history of slavery in America. A Mini-Unit: The Melrose House and Multigenre Writing
In this unit, students will travel virtually through the Melrose house, one of the wealthiest homes of 19th-century Natchez, Mississippi. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the lives and conditions of slaves as they "travel" through the interactive online house and slave quarters. They will demonstrate what they have learned, thought, and felt by creating a multigenre project.
Target grade levels: Middle and high school, grades 7-12
For use with: Melrose Interactive Slavery Environment Using Collage to Represent Themes of the Melrose House Experience
Using the Melrose Interactive Slave Environment, students will explore the home and slave quarters of a wealthy pre-Civil War family from the perspective of the slaves who lived and worked there. Students will create a collage to represent one theme that they feel represents an aspect of the Melrose House slave experience.
Target grade levels: Middle and high school, grades 7-12
