Living History is the reenactment of times past via the reproduction of daily living and the activities therein - including wars, games, faires, artisans, and first-person interpretations - through historic research, period garb, and the use of an era's common tools and objects. It is used as both a means of educating others and remembering the times in which our ancestors lived. Recreation Living History By Historical Region

    Abstract:
Human beings in the late twentieth century were increasingly shaped by the society of the spectacle as it was incorporated into the performative society. This process advanced the nature of spectacle as a major component in an emergent global sensorium. This evolution of spectacle can be understood through comparisons between spectacles in history, and through study of why dramatic theory has denigrated spectacle and why legitimate theatre has aimed to tame it. In turn, this indicates new ways in which spectacle participates in the circulation of power in the contemporary world and suggests an urgent need to revise conceptions of what it might mean to be commonly human. Analysis of spectacles of deconstruction in contemporary performance is especially useful for this task. Because spectacle has become a major force in cultural evolution it has special relevance to activists as a means whereby progressive change can be achieved. Colleran, Jeanne M. (Jeanne Marie), 1954-

I portrayed General George Washington for the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commision's annual Christmas crossing of the Delaware River 1997 and 1999. "Robert Gerenser is a force to be reckoned with in New Hope. He is an expert on George Washington and plays our first president in many reenactments. He has crossed the Delaware on Christmas day as General Washington and he even played Washington in this year's presidential inaugural parade in Washington DC When I called him I said I wanted someone to speak for the town. He was only too happy to do it. I knew that he had had experiences at his theater in town and I was thrilled that he so easily spoke about it. He is a very eloquent speaker for the town and we were delighted to have him."

Located on the James River fall line, Richmond was founded in 1607 by Captains Christopher Newport and John Smith of Jamestown fame. Patrick Henry lit the fires of revolution when he delivered his "…give me liberty or give me death…" speech at St. John’s Church in 1775. You can still visit St. John’s and during the summer enjoy the reenactments of Henry’s famous speech. Richmond replaced Williamsburg as capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1780. The State Capitol was designed by Thomas Jefferson and is one of the most visited sites in the city.
Nightlife and performing arts are vibrant throughout the Region. The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen is home to the Latin Ballet of Virginia. The Richmond Symphony, Richmond Ballet, TheatreVirginia and Virginia Opera make their home in Richmond, continuously entrancing audiences. Theaters such as the Landmark Theater and the Carpenter Center for Performing Arts, both gorgeous historic buildings, draw high-profile concerts, off-Broadway shows, comedians and other outstanding performances.
When You Go:
Stop in the Richmond Region Visitor Center at 405 North 3rd Street to learn about the variety of places to visit. Just follow the Tourist Information signs from the highway. There is plenty of parking in a deck right next door.
