Philadelphia Background Since its founding by William Penn in 1682, Philadelphia has held a prominent spot in America's history and culture. In this thriving urban hub known as “the Cradle of Liberty” and “the City of Brotherly Love,” Americans defended their freedom, achieved new innovations and charted the course for the American Dream. The nation’s fifth largest city and the second largest city on the East Coast, Philly is rated among the country’s top livable metropolitan areas — thanks to its small-town feel, abundance of cultural attractions, and convenient location between the world’s financial center of New York and the U.S. government center of Washington, D.C. In the mid-1700s, with the guidance of prominent citizen Benjamin Franklin, Philadelphia prospered as an axis for the arts — home to a famous cadre of scholars, scientists, mathematicians, painters and authors.

What do cooking, historical reenactments, family history, ethnic music, work, and natural environment have to do with each other? These topics were all included in the Calumet Region's Lyceum. Participants explored how work, creativity and environment weave together to form a rich and diverse regional identity. While the lyceum included components of a traditional history conference, it featured master classes, panel discussions,a motor coach tour, and evening performances.
Master classes
The lyceum kicked off on Friday, September 29, 2000 with five master classes: traditional food, music, crafts, natural history, and genealogy. One could survey, cook, and taste Greek cooking from appetizers to desserts, learn the ins and outs of Bar-B-Que cooking Gary-style, or practice the Polish traditional arts of paper cutting and egg decorating.

TDD:(501) 324-9811 Arkansas has a proud heritage that has been passed down from one generation to the next since the origin of statehood. Much of that heritage has been passed to us through the performing arts. Arkansas's history makes for a fascinating story. And our performing arts have provided an educational and entertaining way to allow that story to unfold. Arkansas's heritage comes to life through the sound of a stringed instrument, the tap of a dance shoe and the performance of an actor on stage. What better way to preserve Arkansas's heritage than through the talents of her people.

Lord and Lady Scott, I wanted to thank you for all of the hard work and effort you put into We Make History to provide us with evenings of fun, honor, and dance. I have enjoyed coming to your balls and am always so impressed by all that attend. It is so refreshing to go somewhere and be treated with respect and dignity. In this day and age, girls only seem to worry about having or getting a boyfriend and that's how they treat men, and men seem to only treat girls as potential girlfriends and objects of desire. It is so wonderful to be able to go to your balls and throw aside the thoughts and pressures of the world and be completely comfortable, with both sexes being treated with respect, honor, and dignity. I have never once worried about any of the men attending the balls acting inappropriately, and all the girls seem to treat the men with the same honor, and respect.
