Finland 500 years on
the map of Europe
Written for Virtual Finland by Erkki Fredrikson
15 November 2001. Finland is mentioned for the first time on a printed map of Europe in the work Liber Chronicarum published in 1493 by Hartman Schedel. On a map of Scandinavia published half a century later a hundred place names in Finland were already known. The Grand Duchy of Finland as a part of the Swedish realm became known to the Europeans in the middle of the 17th century and scientifically accurate maps became known at the end of the 18th century. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs commissioned to assemble the exhibition "Finland 500 years on the Map of Europe" in 1993.

164. Hewsen, Armenia: A Historical Atlas
Includes fifteen maps from a book.
http://www.press.uchicago.edu/Misc/Chicago/332284.html
Maps from
Armenia: A Historical Atlas
by Robert H. Hewsen
About the book: In this atlas, Robert H. Hewsen traces Armenia's turbulent history, from ancient times to the present day through more than two hundred and thirty full-color maps packed with information about physical geography, demography, and sociopolitical, religious, cultural, and linguistic history. Robert Hewsen's work is the first definitive historical atlas of Armenia and the first such atlas to be published for any of the former Soviet republics. The book is divided into five sections, each of which begins with a chronology of important dates and a historical introduction to the period. Specialized maps include Ptolemy's second-century map of Armenia, as well as maps of Roman, Cilician, Ottoman, tsarist, and Soviet Armenia. Other maps show the Persian khanate of Erevan, the Caucasian campaigns of World War I, the Armenian Genocide, the Armenian monuments in Turkey and Transcaucasia, the worldwide diaspora, ground plans of selected cities, and plans of the great monastery of Echmiadzin in 1660, 1890, and 1990. The atlas concludes with maps portraying the Karabagh war and the new Armenian Republic. Looking Toward Ararat: Armenia in Modern History Images of sample maps: Mt. Ararat

Title Index The Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress holds more than 4.5 million items, of which Map Collections represents only a small fraction, those that have been converted to digital form. The focus of Map Collections Map Collections is organized according to seven major categories. Because a map will be assigned to only one category, unless it is part of more than one core collection, searching Map Collections at this level will provide the most complete results since the indexes for all categories are searched simultaneously. Searching Map Collections The mission of the Library of Congress is to make its resources available and useful to Congress and the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations. The goal of the Library's National Digital Library Program is to offer broad public access to a wide range of historical and cultural documents as a contribution to education and lifelong learning. The Library of Congress presents these documents as part of the record of the past. These primary historical documents reflect the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of different times. The Library of Congress does not endorse the views expressed in these collections, which may contain materials offensive to some readers.

The following are a series of historic maps depicting various periods of time in Khazarian history.  The maps below are preview maps, they link to an enlarged version.  They are about 400k in size.  They were designed to be viewed on  an  overhead  projector,  not a  computer  that  is  why  some  of  the  text is small, and why the maps are so big. Note
The borders shown on these maps are approximate borders; the actual line of control often fluctuated from year to year.  Areas marked as 'tributaries' are the outmost regions the Khazars extracted tribute from, but did not necessarily  'govern' or claim  rights to for  any serious length of time.   The outmost  regions  the  Khazars  retrieved plunder are far beyond the tributaries.

It is important to notice that, during late antiquity and early middle age, "public power" and "boundaries" were not clear notions. Moreover our knowledge are often insufficient. Thus, many borders are blurred and the white areas show "unknown territories". Grey shades or grey-like shades point out nations where public power is unknown or imprecise.
