104. Run 8
Railfanning the Seattle and Puget Sound area, with maps and travel advice. Current railroad photos, historical railroad information.
http://www.northwestrailfan.com
My life as a foamer…. I have been chasing trains for the better part of twenty years. By proximity, Burlington Northern (now BNSF ) has been my favorite, but I have never met a train that I did not want to stop and watch for a while. Persons who practice the interesting hobby of watching trains are called railfans, foa mers, or ferns . There are thousands worldwide who have this hobby, yet we remain a mostly invisible segment. As one person told me, "if you don't get it, then there is no way to explain it." Railfans, in general, pursue their interests individually and for widely varied reasons. Railfans range from strange railroad "wannabes," dressed in overalls and engineers caps covered in buttons from fallen flags to the wired techno-freaks that derive intense pleasure at their ability to trace any passing train at any time, anywhere. And while some railfans spend their time waxing poetic about the demise of steam or the last days of their favorite railroad, others eagerly greet the ongoing changes presented by today's railroads. Personally, I would never leave my house with any type of engineer’s hat on...never have, never will.

The flourishing life within the briny habitat of sea ice. The ice specific ecosystem includes bacteria, viruses, unicellular algae, diatom chains, worms and crustaceans. Click on the image to see a magnified view of the brine channels containing these organisms. The flourishing life within the briny habitat of sea ice is intricately linked to physical processes. Temperature controls every physical and chemical aspect of ice, including the availability of light. The most notable effect of decreasing temperature, as winter progresses and the ice solidifies, is the reduction of pore space within the ice, and the concurrent increase in the salinity of the brine. Sea ice serves as habitat for an ice-specific food web ( sympagic foodweb ] that includes bacteria, viruses

On DECEMBER 6, 1492 Christopher Columbus first laid eyes on the pristine shores of the island of Hispanola . Lush with fruits and towering mahogany trees Haiti became known as the "Pearl of the Caribbean". What was once France's richest colony today has become one of the world's poorest nations hindered by dictatorships , depleted natural resources, and overwhelming spiritual darkness.
In its bicentennial year, the second oldest republic in the hemisphere has suffered political unrest that resulted in the departure of its president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide , devastating floods, economic upheaval and endemic poverty.

Sami - indigenous people of the North
The Sami ("sapmelas" in Sami) are one of the indigenous peoples of Europe, just as the Inuit in Greenland. There are over 75 000 Sami. They have their own history, language, culture, livelihoods, way of life and identity. The Sami homeland ("Sapmi" in Sami) reaches from Central Norway and Sweden through the northernmost part of Finland and into the Kola Peninsula. Thus, Sapmi covers areas belonging to the states of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. A people is considered an indigenous people, if its ancestors have inhabited the area before it was conquered or settled or before the present borders were drawn. In addition, such a people is to have their distinct social, economic, cultural and political institutions and to consider themselves an indigenous people. In Finland, Norway and Sweden a person is considered a Sami if she or he regards herself or himself a Sami and has at least one parent or grandparent that learned Sami as her or his mother tongue. More than half of the Sami speak Sami. There are several Sami languages and the Sami speaking the different languages generally can not understand each other. In Finland, Norway and Sweden North Sami, or Mountain Sami, is the main Sami language.
