My life as a foamer . I have been chasing trains for the better part of twenty years. By proximity, Burlington Northern (now BNSF ) has been my favorite, but I have never met a train that I did not want to stop and watch for a while. Persons who practice the interesting hobby of watching trains are called railfans, foa mers, or ferns . There are thousands worldwide who have this hobby, yet we remain a mostly invisible segment. As one person told me, "if you don't get it, then there is no way to explain it." Railfans, in general, pursue their interests individually and for widely varied reasons. Railfans range from strange railroad "wannabes," dressed in overalls and engineers caps covered in buttons from fallen flags to the wired techno-freaks that derive intense pleasure at their ability to trace any passing train at any time, anywhere. And while some railfans spend their time waxing poetic about the demise of steam or the last days of their favorite railroad, others eagerly greet the ongoing changes presented by today's railroads. Personally, I would never leave my house with any type of engineer’s hat on...never have, never will.
