Map of old Liverpool Liverpool, as it appeared on the map back in 1725. Liverpool AD 1331 LYRPOLE. The earliest-known appearance of Liverpool on the map, in the Bodleian Library, from the time of Eward III (1327-77), in whose reign Liverpool (having been founded by King John's Royal Charter in 1207) began to flourish. Note that it is drawn "Sideways", i.e. north is not at the top, where one now expects to find it.
1598 LERPOOLE HAUEN Drawn by William Smith in the second half of the 16th century (British Musium) and shows the Hundred of West Derby, or which Liverpool was at that time merely a "berewick" - the ancient name for a homestead or village, a "Hundred" being a subdevission of a County or Shire having its own court. Liverpool does not appear on the 1086 Domesday Survey, although Crosebi, Fonebi, Liderlant, Torboc, Stochestede (Tosteth) and Spec (Speke) were all important enough for inclusion(see the scouse press packet "Prehistoric and Roman Merseyside" as well as Saxon and Norman Merseyside in preparation). Notice the names of land owners: Norris of Speke, and the Blundells, Molineux, Hesketh etc. Toxteth (also Tockseath) was still an enclosed deer-park, though it was soon to be "disparked" for farming and leased to the earl of Derby and Sefton, and later acquired by Liverpool Corperation: see also the corrisponding pair of maps of 18th century modern Toxteth..

Historical Maps Online
by David Rumsey Editor's note: David Rumsey writes about his collection of more than 150,000 historical maps of the Americas and the world, many of which he has made available free to the public in an online map library . At O'Reilly's upcoming Where 2.0 Conference David will draw on his personal map collection, as well as his work with geographic information systems, to discuss how information of all kinds has been mapped and will be mapped in the future. Over the past 20 years, with the help of dealers, bookstores, auction houses, and other collectors, I have collected more than 150,000 maps of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century North and South America. Scores of scholars, researchers, and others interested in history and the humanities have viewed the physical collection housed in San Francisco, California. The collection also features world maps, and includes atlases, globes, school geographies, maritime charts, and a variety of pocket, wall, children's, and manuscript maps. Driven by an intense desire to make the collection available to the public in an intimate setting, in March 2000, I launched

click on the thumbnail to view the larger image The boundaries of the Cherokee Country prior to the European invasion. The boundaries of the Cherokee Country at the end of the Revolutionary War. The boundaries of the Cherokee Country in the east prior to the removal. It should be noted that before the removal, much of the Nation was overrun by whites who had taken over Vann's house at Springplace, Major Ridge's house (Rome GA), and Chief John Ross's house (Rossville GA). The Cherokee council had been meeting at Red Clay on the Tennesse border because the State of Georgia was using the Georgia Militia to prevent them from meeting at the capital at New Echota. Lands in Georgia had already been granted to white lottery winners in the Georgia Land and Gold Lotteries. A large group of Cherokees moved west of the Mississippi (Spanish territory) with the permission of the Spanish govenor in New Orleans. Groups continued to move west to escape the flood of white settlers onto Cherokee land in NC, GA, and TN. Cherokees who had been moving west since before 1800 were joined by an ongoing migration from the original Nation in the East. A large number of Cherokees had moved into the Arkansas Territory and settled on either side of the Arkansas River between present Ft Smith and Russellville AR. Most of the Cherokees already living around the "bootheel" of Missouri had moved to this area also. The boundaries were established by treaty with the US in 1817. Most the the settlements were along either side of the Arkansas River (the southern boundary) and the White River (the northern boundary). The Arkansas Cherokee (aka Western Cherokee or Old Settlers) were forced to move again in 1828 to what is now Northeastern Oklahoma.

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/pharaohs/maps.html
To a large extent , the existence of a great ancient civilization in Egypt was based on one thing: The Nile river. Surrounded by inhospitable desert, this river, with its predicable seasonal flooding, allowed a culture to develop to such heights that it was able to build many of the world's greatest monuments near its shores. This Historical Maps section lets you explore many of those monuments and geographical features that captured the imagination of people from antiquity to the present.
Presented are three successively larger views of areas in Egypt. The first is the Giza Plateau, where the greatest of the Egyptian pyramids reside. Giza is also where archeologists have recently discovered what is believed to be the city in which the builders of these colossal structures worked and lived. The second map zooms out further to show the most fertile area of ancient construction, the area of Lower Egypt. Finally, we zoom out all the way to show a complete map of modern day Egypt to show just how far the influence of this ancient civilization reached.
