Cultural Maps in American Studies
Comments
Hans Holbein, the younger, Typus Cosmographia Universalis
Cultural Maps is dedicated to the graphical presentation of non-graphical information whatever that turns out to mean. At present, it has something to do with maps in the ordinary and normal sense of the term; the immediate goal is to build a digital American Historical Atlas. To the extent that maps serve as guides not only to the physical terrain but also and importantly as charts of the mapmaker's mental and cultural terrain, of the memories and desires, anxieties and assumptions he projects upon any terra incognita, we have begun building an historical geography of America. Eventually, this space will come to include graphs, charts, and images, in fact anything that serves as a concrete and physical representation of abstract ideas and intangible feelings.

Historical Maps of Computer Networks
A range of the historical maps of ARPANET, the Internet, Usenet, and other computer networks, tracing how these pioneering networks grew and developed.
The pioneering research of Paul Baran in the 1960s, who envisioned a communications network that would survive a major enemy attacked. The sketch shows three different network topologies described in his RAND Memorandum, "On Distributed Communications: 1. Introduction to Distributed Communications Network" (August 1964). The distributed network structure offered the best survivability. A rough sketch map of the possible topology of ARPANET by Larry Roberts . The map was drawn in the late 1960s as part of the planning for the network. (Scanned from Where Wizards Stay Up Late: The Origins of the Internet , by Katie Hafner and Matthew Lyon, page 50.) Maps and Family History
Maps are an irreplaceable part of family history research, especially if you live far from the location in which you are searching. To be truly helpful for family history, any map must show the geography and/or political boundaries as they existed when the ancestor you are researching lived there. Boundaries in the United States have changed constantly since the colonization of the east coast. Vermont, for example, was once part of New York. Counties often started out large and then were divided, sometimes several times, as populations grew. Your ancestors may have lived on the same farm for two hundred years, but their records could be in five counties because of shifting borders. Maps from specific time periods will help you find those boundaries.

David Rumsey is the founder of the David Rumsey Map Collection and president of Cartography Associates. He is the author, with Meredith Williams, of " Historical Maps in GIS " and, with Edith M. Punt, of " Cartographica Extraordinaire: The Historical Map Transformed " (Redlands, Calif., 2004).
A b stract For 20 years, David Rumsey assembled a collection of more than 150,000 historical maps of the Americas and the world. Motivated by a desire to make his private map collection a free public resource, Rumsey then created an online map library, htt p:// www.davidrumsey.com /, which currently has over 10,000 high resolution images of maps from his collection. He has also built a suite of tools for users to experience and interpret the maps online . These includ e GIS, which allows users to combine historical maps with modern geospatial data to see change over time. The online map collection can be accessed over the Internet from search engines, library catalogs, GIS databases and many other entry points. Rumsey continues to add new content to the online collection and develops new tools that improve both the user experience and the online library architecture.

These maps make excellent gifts. Show them in your home, office or lobby they are a conversation starter and will peak the curiosity of anyone. .......Ever wonder what your town, neighborhood or street looked like in the 1800's or in the early 20th century? Covering areas from Java to Palestine, North America, the United States including individual States and Cities, Africa, Asia, Connecticut, Europe, Massachusetts, New York, New York City, Topographical Maps ............ Map making probably begins by using a stick to carve directions into the ground to the best hunting areas. Evidence suggests that the map making evolved independently in many separate parts of earth. Early Eskimos carved ivory coastal maps. Incas built relief maps of stone and clay. The Chinese used maps as early as 7th century B.C. The earliest direct evidence of mapping comes from the middle east where ancient clay tablets show the earth as a flat circular disk. Now while we don't have anything quite as eclectic as this we do have a fine collection of antiquarian and historical maps. Browse our increasingly fine collection of Antiquarian Maps both of local, national, and world interest along with a fine assortment of unusual prints and various related historical ephemera.
