101. Histology - The Anatomical Study Of The Microscopic Structure Of Animal And Plan

http://www.histology.to/
Histology Introduction
This is the science concerned with the study of the microanatomy of tissues and their cellular structure. Even though organs and organism are complex structural entities, their formation is the result of the integration of four primary tissue types. The primary tissue types and their subdivisions differ from each other in the types of cells and their function, the amount of non-living extracellular material (matrix) and the relative volume occupied by cells and matrix. Most organs contain several representatives of each of these tissues and subclasses and the specific arrangement determines the organ's structure and function. The following table provides an initial overview of the four primary tissue types
The Four Primary Tissue Types Type Characteristics Location Epithelium Tissue
  • Tissue that covers organ and exterior surfaces and lines internal passageways Cells form tight connections and are closely packed Skin surface Organ surfaces Interior linings
Muscle Tissue
  • Tissue composed of elongated cells which are packed closely Cells are electrically excitable and are specialized for contraction Skeletal muscle Heart muscle Smooth muscle
Connective Tissue
  • Tissue composed of mostly loosely packed cells Definite presence of a noticeable matrix Functions to bind, support and protect tissues and organs

Low magnification light micrograph of two terminal duct-lobular units (TDLU) within the breast tissue of a non-pregnant women of reproductive age. The extensive branching duct system is surrounded by relatively dense fibrous interlobular tissue (F), at the periphery of which is adipose tissue (A). If this micrograph was at a higher magnification, the loose connective tissue immediately surrounded the TDLU could be appreciated; however, at this magnification, only the dense connective tissue of the perenchyma of the breast is evident.
