The Botswana-Zambian border is a singularity: that is a single point on the Zambezi river, crossed by ferry. This point is shared by the borders of Zimbabwe, and the bizarrely stretched section of Nambia called the Caprivi strip. To the North, Angola is also very near.
After landing in Botswana we almost immediately came upon the border of Chobe game-park. It is ranked 9th best game park in Africa by Getaway magazine, just after the Serengeti/Masai-Mara region in eighth place.
Sitting in the bar at the rather swanky game-lodge we overlooked the Chobe river. In the distance was what I took to be a field full of cows. On closer inspection the scene started to resemble some pre-Ice Age pastureland with huge mammoths nonchalantly grazing, or the grassy wonderland from The Amber Spyglass. Our campsite was a fair distance away from the delights of the main bar and considerably less celubrious. Great care was needed not to lose food or valuables to the incessantly marauding troop of Vervet monkeys. However the great plus was the location of the campsite bar, also on the riverfront and considerably nearer to the grazing elephants. Directly below the bar a hippo lurked, surfacing regularly for a snort before descending for another session of whatever hippos do in their watery domain.

General Information
Tanzania is among the few countries in the world endowed with such a vast range of tourist attractions. Tanzania has 13 national parks, 29 game reserves, 40 controlled conservation areas and marine parks that are located in the Northern and Southern parts of the country. More than 25 per cent of Tanzania’s land area of about one million square kilometers is covered with magnificent game reserves and national parks. Tanzania is also a home to Mt. Kilimanjaro commonly referred to as the Roof of Africa. The breath taking natural beauty of this second highest mountain in the world inspired the legendary author Ernest Hemingway to camp at its slopes and wrote one of his famous novels “Snows of Mt. Kilimanjaro.” The miles long silver sand beaches and the rich historical site of the spicy islands of Zanzibar are yet another attraction that Tanzania is blessed with. June 2005 Harry the Hippo Harry was first brought to the attention of the Born Free Foundation by Foxy, DJ at Viking Radio, following his holiday in Paris, France. Harry, as named by Foxy, is one of the three hippopotamuses (Hippopotamus amphibius) living at the Parc Zoologique (Zoo de Vincennes) in Paris. Foxy was concerned by the conditions in which Harry and friends are housed, and contacted Born Free to see if we could help.
Following Foxy's breakfast radio show on Viking Radio, the Born Free Foundation has been inundated with concerned reports about Harry from members of the public. Born Free immediately sent a representative to Parc Zoologique to investigate Harry's living conditions. In the wild, hippopotamuses are found in rivers and lakes in grassland areas in West and East Central Africa. Hippos are social animals, living in herds of approximately 10-15 animals, ranging from 2-50 individuals, sometimes up to 200 individuals (although some males may be found living alone). Herds consist of females, their dependent offspring and a dominant male. Hippos are herbivores, feeding on grasses and crops. Hippos require water deep enough to completely submerge, with a gently sloping gradient, where they will spend the majority of the day socializing, sleeping and digesting. They become more active at night, leaving the water to graze, and cover an average distance of 2-3 miles on a daily basis. Hippos must submerge regularly because their skin is thin and virtually hairless and therefore vulnerable to overheating and dehydration.

Game Viewing The Cape of Good Hope The Wine Estates The Fairest Cape ... The People of South Africa
The Big Five and the Indulgent Five
Generations of the intrepid and the well-traveled have ventured to South Africa for its astonishing variety of wild game. In years prior, European nobility came to hunt and kill. In our era of heightened awareness of endangered species, animal lovers and nature lovers come from all over the world to view game: not as they are viewed in a zoo, but as they engage in their daily activities. You watch the animals bathe and feed, play with and court one another, fight and tease one another, take catnaps (pardon the pun) and search for their next meal. If you are lucky, you may follow a pride of lions as they engage in a strategic hunt. Every visitor - by virtue of his visit alone - lends support to the urgency of conservation in Africa. South Africa, with its intact eco-systems and its wide range of animal life and bird life, is in the forefront of world conservation efforts. This has been achieved through a joint venture of the government and the private game reserves, whose mission is two-fold: · to engage in conservation and re-population efforts. · to allow their (human) guests the opportunity to safely live with the game at close-hand in a way that is respectful and non-threatening. South Africa boasts impressive numbers of the "Big Five" (so-named by hunters who considered them the five most challenging types of prey): lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard. Beyond the glamorous Big Five, South Africa also offers an amazing diversity of other animal life: zebras, giraffe, cheetahs, hippos, wild dogs, whales and dolphins, 700 species of birds and countless species of butterflies.

Conservation of hippo numbers must be undertaken in order to preserve the illusion that humans have not overpopulated the planet.
Click This little graph shows the increase in human numbers in the last few thousand years. In this case, the distance from 1,000 million to 7,600 million is 7.6 times the distance from zero to 1,000 million. 7.6 billion is demographers' mid projection. Graph curve is from Learning Tools , KQED TV, San Francisco, a PBS educational tv station. Overpopulation denialists right and left have asked about the source, so now you know. The leader of the Task Force on Amphibian Decline living in Britain objected calling the graph extreme and, "off the scale." But it isn't. It is simply demographer's mid projection. Usually when such a graph is drawn, a short time scale is used. But an evolutionarily significant time scale can more easily show relevant amounts of increase per unit of time.

    75. Where The Wild Things Are
Whispered rumors flew around our group that the mounds were hippos. I could noteven comprehend that so many hippos could be in one place.
    http://www.abroadviewmagazine.com/archives/spring_99/wildthings.html
Where the Wild Things Are Water in the Desert By W. Scott Leach Camp fires have a strange ability to bring people together in order to ponder the important questions of life, especially when that fire is built under a star-filled sky that stretches over southern Africa. For many nights, my friends and I discussed questions like "Who would win in a fight between the top 10 fiercest animals of North America versus the top 10 wildest animals of Africa?" We decided that, when it comes down to it, the animals of Africa would dominate the animals of North America, hands down. Contrary to what many people may believe, cities and towns in Africa do not have wild elephants walking around the streets. In fact, cities like Cape Town and Bulawayo are almost exactly like cities in the United States. The southern reign of Africa is becoming more and more developed and less and less wild. The magnificent elephants, giraffes and lions that have come to represent Africa are being pushed into national parks or into places that are still too wild for humans to fully develop. The Okavango Delta is made up of such a complex maze of waterways, islands and rivers that it is impossible to navigate through it without local help. For this reason, it has long been protected from intrusive outsiders. Natives of the Okavango Delta live by supporting themselves off of fish caught in the rivers and streams. The main form of transportation consists of canoes dug-out, or mekoros, pushed by long poles. The polers who navigate the Delta have been learning the different water paths and islands since childhood, the knowledge being passed down from generation to generation, father to son. When asked how long it would take to get from the northern end of the Delta to the southernmost end, a poler replied to me, in a matter-of-fact way, "A month and a half."

The tortoise and the hippo: Kenya's odd couple
Published: Wednesday, March 2, 2005 [Click to enlarge] MOMBASA, Kenya - For a panic-stricken baby hippo, lost and far from home, the sight of a wrinkly, rotund old male tortoise must have suggested something very different: Are you my mother? Owen the hippo sought refuge behind the tortoise one day just after Christmas, and weeks later here they are together, safe and warm on a lazy afternoon. Owen looks like a character in a children's book, his eyes closed blissfully as he snuggles down in a mud puddle near a reptile 129 years his senior. He pricks up his Shrek-like ears at the slightest sound, opens his eyes, then dozes off again. In the wild, hippos are sociable creatures who live in close-knit groups. But this bonding of mammal and reptile has surprised the experts.

One of oldest hippos turns 54, stays on diet
    Associated Press
    EVANSVILLE, Ind.
Zoo keeper John W. Stuteville said Donna is considered one of the world's oldest living Nile hippos. She has already outlived her mate and all eight of their offspring. Stuteville said that in the wild, hippos usually live to be only 30 to 45 years old. Arthritis, which afflicts Donna, usually brings them down because they carry too much weight on their short stubby legs and knees. Stuteville attributes Donna's longevity to the care she has received at the zoo and to her surroundings, including inclines she must climb out of her enclosure's pools - a design that keeps her active. Mesker obtained Donna from a zoo in Memphis in 1954, three years after she was born. Stuteville greets the hippo each morning with a variety of food that usually includes two oranges, a tomato, a sweet potato, an apple and two bananas.

And the Winner Is... The votes are in and the winning name for the baby pygmy hippo is "Kibibi" which means "little lady" in Swahili. The winning entry was submitted by Rebekah Hammontree of Salem, Indiana.
A healthy 10-pound female pygmy hippo was born at the Louisville Zoo at 2:10 p.m. Wednesday, May 4, much to the relief of the keepers and veterinary staff who were in attendance since early morning. There are only 35 pygmy hippos on exhibit in North America and births are rare. The gestation period for pygmy hippos is from 184 to 204 days. There have only been seven born in the last five years. Father Maji Kitoto in a nearby stall was very interested in the proceedings but otherwise not involved at this stage. This is the first birth for the pair. Mother Tracy was attentive to the calf and nursing began within six hours. Looking just like a miniature version of mom, the baby is rapidly bulking up, gaining a pound a day.
