Suborder: Suiformes
Family: Hippopotamidae
Genus/species: Hexaprotodon liberiensis Natural History Pygmy hippopotamuses are members of the family Hippopotamidae, along with the larger Nile hippopotamuses. Their next closest living relatives are pigs and peccaries. In the wild, pygmy hippopotamuses are rare and it seems that there may never have been many of them in existence at any one time. In 1927 Harvey Firestone (who owned a large rubber plantation in Liberia) gave President Calvin Coolidge a male pygmy hippo named Billy as a gift. Billy is the ancestor to almost all pygmy hippos living in American zoos. Description At first glance, pygmy hippopotamuses resemble their larger relatives, Nile hippopotamuses. But, on closer examination, several differences can be noted. Pygmy hippopotamuses are smaller. They weigh 350 to 550 pounds (158.8 to 249.5 kg), stand about two and a half feet (0.8 m) tall at the shoulder, and measure about five feet (1.5 m) from head to tail. They are more pig-like in shape than Nile hippopotamuses, with proportionately smaller heads and proportionately longer legs and necks. Their tail hairs are branched, not unbranched as found on Nile hippopotamuses.

formidable weaponry for the Nile hippo. Bulky and barrel-shaped, Nile hippos may look clumsy, but they are superbly adapted to their mixed terrestrial and aquatic lifestyle. Their eyes, ears, and nostrils sit on top of their heads for living in the water, and they have wide snouts and thick lips for grazing grasses on land. Hippos vary from brown to grayish purple, with pink underbellies and skin creases. Their skin consists of a thick layer (up to 1 3/4 inches) covered by a thin epidermis that is protected by a red excretion that serves as sunscreen and probably as a disinfectant. Hippos are virtually hairless, with bristles only on their noses, ears, and tails. Nile hippos can live up to 45 years in the wild, and often a few years longer in zoos.

    Facts about hippos
Facts about hippos: he's the behemoth of the wild - the mighty hippopotamus. Learn all about awesome hippo here.
3,500 years ago the Bible referred to him simply as Behemoth. What modern day creature fits such an imposing description? It is none other than that thick skinned herbivore – the hippopotamus. The Bible gives us an interesting insight into the hippo. In Job Chapter 40 we learn that the hippo eats grass just as the bull, that its strong bones are like wrought iron rods, that it resides in swampy places and that it is not easily startled. All of these facts can be by studying the modern day hippo. What else do we know about this enormous creature? The hippo is, indeed an eater of vegetation. In a year, in fact, around 200 pounds of soft water plants, grass, reeds, and other greenery pass between it’s jaws every year. All of this food keeps the animal growing and a full grown hippo can reach up to 14 feet in length. They are also extremely heavy, reaching fully grown weights of about 3 or 4 thousand pounds. The heaviest recorded was 8,960 pounds. The weight of the hippo is supported on four rather stubby legs. These legs, however, contain extremely bones. They can also move quite rapidly, with the hippo easily being capable of outdistancing a human. The hippo has an extremely thick hide, allowing it to scrape alongside rocks and stones in the water without discomfort. The skin is equipped with special pores that secrete a thick, oily substance to keep the skin moist while out of the water. They spend the majority of their time in the water and can usually be spotted in herds of twenty or thirty. Spending their days submerged, allows the hippo to avoid the potentially damaging effects of the suns rays on it’s skin. At night, though, he comes onto dry land to graze for his food.

Peter Gros: Good evening! This is Peter Gros, and I look forward to chatting with you and 'rumbling' with you about hippos and crocodiles! Darlene: How did you first become involved with the Wild Animal Kingdom?
Peter Gros: I was a designer of endangered species reproduction facilities for animal parks and zoos in the United States, and I was successful enough that I started talking on national talk shows about out successes. I ended up meeting Jim Fowler one evening on the "Johnny Carson" show with the largest litter of tiger cubs ever born that we had to bottle-raise at that facility. After that show, Mr. Fowler asked me if I could participate in the "Wild Kingdom" show. I continued to work with zoos for the next five years, as well as becoming spokesperson for Mutual of Omaha with Jim Fowler, and co-hosting their famous wildlife show. To this day I still feel very fortunate to be able to affect public opinion and concern about our natural world through the relationship with Mutual of Omaha and Animal Planet. Plan now to be assured a rejuvenating escape at a restful pace -to an unspoilt gem in the purest sense. The Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania is the largest in Africa. It supports an enormous number of animals, including the rare African wild dog and black rhino. It is, in short, the ultimate African wilderness and its very name exudes an air of mystery for lovers of the African bush. However, only one per cent of tourists to Tanzania visit it each year. In January 1917, Captain Frederick Courtney Selous, the prototypal Great White Hunter and writer of popular African hunting yarns, was killed by German fire in the so-called 'Battle for the Bundu', an obscure World War I campaign fought in the remote southern wilderness of what at the time was then German East Africa. A year later, the writer P.H. Lamb trekked to the site where the captain had fallen and was buried. This is what he reported: 'It is a wild inhospitable district, the haunt of a great variety of big game, including elephants, giraffes and rhinos. Not more than four miles away is a warm salt spring running down into a salt lake, where hippos, wild ducks, egrets and numerous other wild fowls abound. But despite these alleviations it can hardly be called a fascinating part of the world, and the object of most people who have seen it will be to avoid it carefully in the future.'

NYF wild for TBWA Chiat/Day's `Hippos'
    by Teressa Iezzi
page 11 To draw visitors to the African Savanna Exhibit at the Metro Toronto Zoo, TBWA Chiat/Day creatives were charged with conveying an immersing experience, a concept taken quite literally in the production of "Hippos," which captured a Silver award in the entertainment promotion category at the New York Festivals. The ad ran as part of a campaign to support an exhibit which promised to capture the essence of a visit to the wilds of Africa. The spot was created by TBWA Chiat/Day writer Paul Evans and art director Daniel Vendramin and directed by Howard Alstad out of Avion Films. The creative mandate for the spots was to go beyond persuading people to simply come and visit an evolutionary peculiarity like a pigment-challenged lion or a naked mole. "The exhibit made it look like you were in the African savanna; the idea was it was the next best thing to being there," says Vendramin. "This was more of an experience, and therefore it was harder to communicate." The creative team therefore established "It will affect you" as the tag line and the central idea to convey the all-encompassing nature of the exhibit. Illustrating that point were three spots, each demonstrating vivid examples of how visitors got into the African savanna experience.

Henri, Hoovie and Heidi are Dublin Zoo's three common hippopotamuses. The word 'hippopotamus' is Greek and means 'river horse'. Hippos are strictly vegetarian and in the wild would eat mostly grasses. Here in the zoo they get a variety of vegetables including carrots. During the day, wild hippos spend most of the day in the water and come out at night to eat. This is because their skin loses water very quickly and if they came out to graze in the heat of the day they would dehydrate. At one time it was thought that hippos sweated blood - because they have a reddish secretion that comes out of the skin. In fact it acts as a sunscreen and may even prevent the many cuts and scrapes that hippos get on their skin from becoming infected in dirty water. Hippos are extremely graceful when they are in the water. They can float on the top of the water resting or sink to the riverbed and walk or run along the bottom. Like many other animals that spend a lot of time in water, the hippo's eyes, ears and nostrils are all positioned on the top of the head so that they can see hear and smell even when the rest of the body is submerged.
