Hinduism in America
Welcome to "Hinduism in America." This study was conceived as a final project for an American Civilization course at Brown University, entitled "The Pacific Rim in American History." Basically this study started with the question, "How does life change once someone moves to America?" Do we find immigrants embracing the ideals of their new land, or do they retreat to the ideals with which they grew up? What happens to the immigrants' children?
(see also Authors' rationale These are broad questions to tackle. Hence, we decided to focus on Hinduism in South Asian Americans and see what kind of changes we could document over the generations. Specifically, we chose the medium-sized community of South Asians located in South Jersey. Our project focused on immigrants who came to the US post 1960 (see Contextualizing this study ), and their children between the ages of 17 and 25. What follows are the results of our project. We are placing an in-depth discussion of our results online , as well as two very interesting family case studies. The complete store of information we compiled during this study is available from the Data Center Brown University Student Projects Table of Contents ... Sacred scriptures include the Vedas, the Upanishads, and the Bagavad-Gita. They describe the cycles of life and the meaning of existence. Numerous gods and goddesses express human dramas common to all. Temples are places for prayers, offerings, singing and teaching. Families and individuals observe rituals and festivals at home as well.

Some Hindus are vegan, which means they will not eat any animal products, including eggs and cheese. Other Hindus will eat poultry and fish, but will not eat beef. Cows are particularly sacred to Hindus. It is not unusual to see a cow wandering through the streets of an Indian city. Many Hindus consider the Ganges River holy. Lately, the Ganges has become very polluted, but Hindus believe the water from the Himalayas will purify the souls of those who drink or bathe in its waters. Many Hindus make a pilgrimage to the Ganges. Others travel to it near the end of their lives so they may die near the banks of the Ganges River. NEXT: Buddhism To cite this page:

Yoga and Meditation > Hinduism Philosphy
Hinduism represents a very broad and diverse philosophy embedded within religion. Too broad really to have any pretentions about explaining what hinduism stands for on a page like this. In origin Hinduism rests on the vedic traditions and on the tantric traditions. The vedic traditions are best represented in the Veda's, the main and first holy books of hinduism, although they existed as a purely oral tradition long before books were invented and although many later hinduism scriptures became of vital importance. The tantric traditions in hinduism do not have any particular holy books, but much rather combine many ancient sciences such as astronomy, astrology numerology , physiognomy, physics, chemistry, alchemy, Ayurveda (the traditional medicine of India)

Since different gods are thus proposed as the One God, Hinduism is an unusual kind of monotheism: it contains virtual sub-religions consisting of the devotees of Vis.n.u, the Vaishnavites, and the devotees of Shiva, the Shaivites. It is best to see this as an instance of the " multiplicity of explanations On the other hand, the earlier ] Since the personal Gods could all be seen on the same footing in relation to an impersonal Brahman, an attempt was made, we know not by whom, to tidy up things through the doctrine of the (the masculine form of Brahman), was a creator God in the Vedas (more or less identifiable with Prajapati kalpa He then sleeps for another kalpa The most important feature of the cult of Vis.n.u

Both have spread beyond the subcontinent to virtually all parts of the globe, though most adherents to these faiths claim Indian ancestry. Hinduism
Article written by Lise F. Vail for the Asia Society's Focus on Asian Studies, Vol. II, No. 1, Asian Religions AskAsia Hinduism one of the world's great religions, spans nearly 4,000 years of belief, ritual, religious experience, and social practice in what is now called India. While there is no single founder, Hinduism claims its roots in Sanskrit texts called the four Vedas (ca. 1500-1200 B.C.), which were revealed to mystical sages. The Vedas are primarily hymns of praise addressed to the gods and goddesses (devas and devis) of the Aryan people. The Aryans were a semi-nomadic people who, entering through the northwest Hindu Kush Mts., conquered a now-fading civilization of the Indus Valley region. The present-day South Indian Dravidian people and the Indus Valley people may have had common roots. We know little of Indus valley religion except that archeologists may have found a sandstone prototype of the later Hindu yogi meditating ascetic and some terra-cotta female figurines. Many of the core ideas of Hinduism probably emerged from both of these civilizations. The Aryan Vedas mention a system of four interdependent social classes called varnas (Brahmin priests, Kshatriya warriors, Vaishya traders, and Shudra servants). This class division formed the ideology, and possibly the origin (through intermarriage), of the later more rigid caste (jati) system. Indians believe that society naturally functions in a unified way, as do the different parts of the human body. This is in accordance with the divine Law or order (
