This article is about the Hindu religion; for other meanings of the word, see Hindu (disambiguation)
OM , a sacred syllable and a quintessential symbol of Hinduism. Its meanings are many. Hinduism ; also known as Sanātana Dharma , and Vaidika-Dharma ) is a worldwide religious tradition that is based on the bedrock of the Veda scriptures. It encompasses many religious traditions that widely vary by culture, as well as many diverse beliefs and sects. The estimates of Hinduism's origin vary from 3102 BCE to 1300 BCE, and it is generally regarded as the world's oldest extant religion. It is also the third largest religion with a following of approximately 1.2 billion people, including practitioners of yoga . Ninety-eight percent of Hinduism's practitioners can be found on the Indian subcontinent , chiefly in Bharat India ). It is noteworthy however that the relatively small Himalayan kingdom of Nepal is the only nation in the world with Hinduism as its state religion. The term ' Hindu ' itself derives from the name of the Sindhu (Indus) river, which is known as Hindu in Persian.

Hinduism FAQ
Polygamy Polygamy and polyandry were prevalent In ancient India, but it is doubtful whether they were ever popular in the public opinion. It was practiced mostly by the warrior castes and rich merchants. Many Hindu gods are also depicted as polygamous, with two or more wives. The goddesses are not actually wives in the physical sense but pure universal energies who assist their gods to maintain dharma (good order) in the universe. They do not possess physical bodies, though they can appear in human form if they want to. Present day Hindus consider both polygamy and polyandry primitive and archaic, remnants of an old society that still haunt the lives of a few unfortunate victims. In India Hindus acknowledge polygamy as both illegal and immoral. If we study the history of ancient India, we realize that polygamy and polyandry were practiced by the rich and the powerful, while the sages and seers were strictly monogamous or completely celibate. We also notice that whether it was in the past or in the present, polygamy was never a popular practice in the public opinion. Hinduism does not favor Polygamy Hindu scriptures describe the family as a social institution, and at the same time as an integral part of this illusory world. In the ultimate sense the institution family is meant to keep each individual chained to the world of illusion. The relationships in the family are meant to develop attachment, selfishness and desires. In the end these relationships really do not last and each individual in it is left to himself.

You are in: Front Page Sitemap Religions of the World Hinduism Hinduism - Introduction Hinduism is the name given to a family of religions and cultures that began and still flourish in India.
Like other Eastern religions, it doesn't fit comfortably into the same box as Western religions like Christianity.
Hindus do not separate religion from other aspects of life. For Hindus in India, Hinduism is an inextricable part of their existence, a complete approach to life that involves social class, earning a living, family, politics, diet, etc., in addition to the things Westerners view as religious. The word "Hindu" comes from the name of the river Indus, which flows 1800 miles from Tibet through Kashmir and Pakistan to the sea. Originally the name referred to people living in a particular region of the world, regardless of their faith; so in the 18th century someone could quite sensibly be described as a "Hindu Muslim".

Who is a Hindu? "Acceptance of the Vedas with reverence; recognition of the fact that the means or ways to salvation are diverse; and the realization of the truth that the number of gods to be worshiped is large, that indeed is the distinguishing feature of the Hindu religion." B.G. Tilak's definition of what makes one a basic Hindu, as quoted by India's Supreme Court. On July 2, 1995, the Court referred to it as an "adequate and satisfactory formula."

A Life of Ritual and Devotion

Hinduism and Buddhism arrived in Bali partly via Java and partly direct from India, between the 8th and 16th centuries. Elements of the two religions have developed further and merged here. The Indian division into four castes has also been adopted, and religious practices are closely connected with social hierarchy. Balinese society is separated into four main groups: brahmana, satriya, wesya and anak jaba or sudra, which are in turn subdivided into many more.
