"A express journey through Hindu mythology"
Anna L. Dallapiccola's book makes a valiant attempt at capturing the contents of several colossal Hindu mythological narrations from Hindu epics, including the Mahabaratha, Ramayana, Devi Bagavatham, and Sivapuranas. The slim book's introduction presents a sketch of the Hindu deities, mythology, and Hinduism. Dallapiccola explains how the Nataraja's five divine activities of creation, preservation, destruction, power of delusion, and the bestowal of grace inspired her to structure the book's five chapters. This thematic structure dissolves within the chapters where the author uses narratives in randomly, allowing for discontinuity and difficulty in understanding the more subtle spiritual and ethical messages connoted in the mythology. The first chapter explores the theme of creation in Hindu mythology and narrates two stories from the Dashavathara, The 10 reincarnations of Vishnu, the Hindu god of preservation. While these illustrate the Hindu concept of creation being a cyclic process, the reader is not made aware of the existence of eight more stories until the second chapter. The next two chapters deal with the themes of preservation and destruction. Dallapiccola has taken the limited view of Vishnu as the preserver and Shiva as the destroyer in the pantheon of Hindu gods. She goes into details about two of Vishnu's human incarnation Rama and Krishna and their heroic roles of preserving the world and slants the several incarnations of Shiva or Devi as destroyers. Hindu mythology in it's wholeness also depicts Vishnu as the destroyer of evil and Shiva and Devi the preserver of good.

According to Hindu mythology, for the 'Prakrishta Yagna', Lord Brahma, the creator - God of the Trinity, chose a piece of land on earth, on which the three rivers - the Ganga, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati - would flow into a quiet confluence. That land, blessed by the Gods, came to be called 'Prayag' or 'Allahabad', as it is known today. It is one of the most sacred pilgrimage centres of India.

Glory of Hinduism
Introduction
Hinduism is the religion of the Hindus. It is the oldest of all living religions. Hinduism is not a man-made religion. It was not founded by any single person. It is not based on a set of dogmas preached by a particular set of teachers. It was not started as a system, like Islam or Christianity. It is the product of the seers of the Vedas. It was developed from age to age by the teachings of Avataras, Rishis, Vedas, the Upanishads, the Gita and the Itihasas. It will exist as long as the world lasts. There is a peculiar, mysterious spiritual force that is ingrained in the heart of every Hindu. Hinduism is also known by the names Sanatana Dharma and Vaidika Dharma. Sanatana Dharma means eternal religion, the Ancient Law. Vaidika Dharma means the religion of the Vedas. The Vedas are the foundational scriptures of Hinduism.
A Religion of Freedom
Hinduism allows absolute freedom to the rational mind of man. Hinduism never demands any undue restraint upon the freedom of human reason, the freedom of thought, feeling and will of man.

Great Stories from Hindu Mythology which are told in Angkor Wat
brief summary of the stories carved on the very walls of this ancient monument. A feature article by Aneeta Sundararaj, Feb 02, 2005 Summary:
The story behind some of the carvings in this ancient monument is depicted here. Angkor is an ancient city that has a series of buildings. These buildings were constructed over many centuries by various Khmer Kings. Angkor Wat itself was dedicated to the Hindu God, Vishnu by King Suryavarman II, who reigned between AD 1131 and 1150. The Temple was constructed over a period of 30 years, and illustrates some of the most beautiful examples of Khmer and Hindu art. Covering an area of about 81 hectares, the complex consists of five towers, which are presently shown on the Cambodian national flag. These towers are believed to represent the five peaks of Mount Meru, the Home of Gods and Center of the Hindu Universe. One of the great stories of Hindu mythology is that of ‘Churning the Sea of Milk’. This entire story was depicted in the stone carvings of Angkor Wat – the picture above is a photo of this myth and is part of the longest continuous bas-relief in the world, which runs along a panel at the East gallery (panel 4) of Angkor Wat.

Bali – Where the great stories of Hindu Mythology and Reality
Come discover how the people of Bali have made their island a canvas to showcase artworks inspired by their belief systems. A feature article by Aneeta Sundararaj, Feb 02, 2005 Summary:
The people of Bali, who profess to practise Hindusim, have carved statues that depict stories from the two great epics of India, The Mahabharat and The Ramayana. In this article you will read about one person’s journey of discovery on her visit to the island. I had, previous to visiting Bali, been told that the Hinduism practised in Bali was ‘undeveloped’. This comment, I found deeply intriguing for being Hindu myself, it was wonderful to visit Bali and discover that the Hinduism that is practised is most certainly not undeveloped. Hindus believe in the One Great God, Ishwara. When called Brahma he takes over the Creation of the Universe. When called Vishnu, he assumes the role of the Preserver and when he is the Destroyer, he is called Shiva. There are ten incarnations of Vishnu of which only nine have appeared thus far. Brahma, Vishnu (together with his nine incarnations) and Shiva make up the basis of the entire mythology of the Hindu faith which is described in the two main epics of Mahabharat and Ramayana.

75. Soma (from Hindu Mythology)
Not too surprising if you read on about hindu mythology as below, and the presentHindu attitude towards intoxicants. I would now like to quote from a book
http://peyote.com/jonstef/Hindu.htm
Soma (from Hindu Mythology) Soma according to Vedic Hymns, is the god who, "represents and animates the juice of the Soma plant." He was the Indian Bacchus. Not only are all the hymns of the ninth book of the Rig-Veda, 114 in number besides a few in other places, are dedicated to his honour, but constant references occur to him in large proportions in other hymns. In some of these hymns he is extolled as the Creator, or Father of the gods. Evidently at that time he was a most popular deity. Indra was an enthusiastic worshipper of Soma.
The following lines lines will show the warmth and feeling towards him :- "This Soma is a god; he cures
The sharpest ills that man endures.
He heals the sick, the sad he cheers,
He nerves the weak, dispels their fears;
The faint with martial ardour fires,
With lofty thoughts the bard inspires;
The soul from earth to heaven he lifts :
So great and wondrous are his gifts,
Men feel the god within their veins
And cry loud in exulting strains :
'We've quaffed the Soma bright And are immortal grown : We've entered into light

Though they are often classified as 'Hindu' or 'Indian' 'mythology,' the label does not capture the centrality of religious and spiritual affiliations of the texts that ring true today for most Hindus. They are replete with long philosophical discourses and are often seen as sourcebooks for Hindu ethics and practice. A parallel would be to term the Old Testament 'Christian mythology'. The most important of these are the Ramayana and the Mahabharata , of which the Bhagavad Gita is part. They also include a voluminous group of works known as the puranas . The most famous purana is the Srimad Bhagavatam , a text especially important to Vaishnavs though also seen as holy by most Hindus.

In Hindu mythology, we come across the idea that gods can be pleased by praying to them in difficult conditions such as in harsh weather, etc. Perhaps the idea was that if one can concentrate the mind on God /(a god) inspite of the distractions, God will be pleased. Anyway, I heard the following irreverent joke about this concept a few years back. ... A guy makes up his mind to please one particular god - Yama. (Yama is supposed to be the god of death - the cosmic hit man. Like every god, he too has a vehicle - he rides on a bull.) So this guy prays while standing on one leg, in rain, in snow, ... and so on. But Yama is in no hurry. The guy is getting angry, but since he has already spent so much time on this endeavor, he decides to see it through. Finally, after a long time, Yama appears in front of him and ... YAMA : "Son, I am very pleased with your devotion. You can have
