Pennsylvania Backpacking, Camping and Hiking Guide
Although Swedes and Dutch were the first European settlers, William Penn, a Quaker, named Pennsylvania in honor of his father by combining the name Penn and the Latin term sylvania, which translates as "woodlands", to come up with "Penn's woodlands." Pennsylvania was the second of the original 13 states of the Union (1787).
Today, two major cities dominate the state Philadelphia, home of the Liberty Bell, Constitution Hall, and a thriving metropolitan area, and Pittsburgh, a busy inland river port.
Pennsylvania is one of the nation's most historic states. Philadelphia is often called the cradle of the American Nation. It was here that the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were drawn up by the founding fathers.
The Pocono Mountains and the Delaware Water Gap provide popular recreational activities.
The Pennsylvania Dutch region in south-central Pennsylvania is another favorite of sightseers. Some Pennsylvania Dutch groups, including the Amish and the Mennonites, are called the Plain People; they live and dress as their ancestors did, with no modern conveniences.

Doing or Being
Spa activities allow guests to set their own level of activity for the kind of renewal they need. Guests can choose from activities as dynamic as hiking, horseback riding, yoga, swimming and water exercise, or as serene as a massage, a mud wrap, a soak in the pool or just sitting in the sun with a good book. Evening cultural programs presented by experts in a variety of fields offer opportunities for education as well as diversion for guests (see Programs Calendar). Eco-Exploring Rio Caliente is surrounded and sheltered by the Sierra La Primavera, part of a magnificent belt of long extinct volcanic mountains. From deep underground comes the hot river, cradling Rio Caliente in a wide horseshoe. You can explore the varied ecology of the region over 100 varieties of birds (see Bird page ) including the exotic Motmot, Orioles, the Squirrel-Tailed Cuckoo and Hummingbirds and plants including Montezuma Pine, tropical Palm and Bougainvillea. The local geological deposits of Rio Caliente tell the story of numerous violent volcanic eruptions deposits of ash flow, pumice, obsidian and caldera-lake sediments reveal the dramatic events which gave shape to Rio Caliente. At Rio Caliente, hikers have countless trails to explore, some much more demanding than others. From the high ridges, the vistas are spectacular. Equally interesting are the hikes along the river to its sources. Hikes generally vary in length from 1 hour to 3-1/2 hours as well as in degree of difficulty. It is no wonder that guided hiking is a favorite activity of Rio Caliente guests!

ISMRM Regional Organizing Committee Suggested Recreational Activities
The postponement of the ISMRM meeting to July opens a number of opportunities for things to do outside the City of Toronto. The quintessential Ontario recreation is canoeing. The canoe was developed by the Indians of Eastern Canada and was a means of transport on the many lakes and rivers of the province. These lakes are often disconnected by short segments of land necessitating portaging. The canoe is an ideal craft for this kind of travel and has become a holiday activity for many people around Southern Ontario. Several Provincial Parks are located within two to four hours of Toronto and provide ideal canoeing opportunities ( www.ontarioparks.com ). The best known Ontario park is Algonquin Provincial Park, which attracts canoeists from around the world to its pristine lakes and forests. It tends to be rather busy in the summer and requires advanced booking. The most picturesque park is Killarney Provincial Park about four hours north of Toronto in the direction of Sudbury. This park allows for a combination of canoeing and hiking. One of the newest parks only two hours from Toronto is Massauga Provincial Park which consists of lakes and some segments of the
