Hart Mtn NAR: Recreational Activities
These two activities are the most popular recreational activities on the refuge. Viewing wildlife in its native environment is a richly rewarding activity for the young and old. A few tips will help you see and enjoy refuge wildlife. Early morning and late evening is when wildlife are most active and easiest to spot, especially in the heat of the summer. Your car makes an excellent observation blind. Many types of wildlife can be approached more closely in a car than on foot. However, road access is very limited on the refuge, so hiking into more remote areas may also provide excellent opportunities to view animals, take-in the beautiful scenery, and experience the solitude and wildness of the refuge. Hike quietly to improve your odds of wildlife encounters. Binoculars or spotting scopes are very important for viewing wildlife across the great expanses of refuge habitat. HIKING Hiking is encouraged throughout the refuge, but

Recreational Opportunities on CRP Lands Lonnie E. Varnedoe, Jr.
Extension Forest Resources
The University of Georgia Introduction Although quality timber production may be the main objective for most of our CRP pine lands, many landowners have other objectives in mind. These other objectives often include enhanced wildlife, clean water, intensified forest aesthetics, quality forest recreational activities, and a variety of other purposes. As these CRP stands are beginning to reach pulpwood size, the big question for many innovative forest landowners then becomes: Which of the above activities can I conduct in my planted pine forests as they reach ten plus years old? First, it seems like a good idea that we get some sense of the characteristics of the trees and the environment they are in. On a site with average productivity (site index = 70) these ten year old pine trees will be about 6 inches DBH and forty-one feet tall. Originally planted at 700 trees per acre, they are now down to about 580 trees per acre due to losses of various types. The understory is mostly open and clear of underbrush. There is a layer of pinestraw on the ground and there is some room between the trees allowing you to walk upright in most places without fear of hitting your head on a limb. There are many recreational activities for a landowner in a CRP forest. Think back to the fondest memories of your youth. Perhaps you can conjure up carefree adventures involving a forest setting.

Colorful prairie flowers and grasses and the glittering blue chain of the Waterton Lakes are set against a mountain backdrop. The sight of the historic Prince of Wales Hotel, on a knoll above the lakes, indicates you will soon arrive at our lakeside townsite. The Akamina Parkway begins near the townsite and runs for 16 km (10 mi.) along the Cameron Valley. Points of interest include the site of western Canada's first producing oil well, the Oil City site and scenic Cameron Lake. The Red Rock Parkway meanders over rolling prairie and through the Blakiston Valley. It ends at the strikingly colored rocks and cascading creeks of Red Rock Canyon, a distance of 15 km (9 mi.). The drive features views of magnificent mountains, including Mt. Blakiston, the Park's highest peak.

They liked what they found, fell in love with the area, and are now happy to call the Coloma Valley home.
Whitewater rafting

The South Fork of the American River boasts the most popular whitewater in California. The 20-mile run from Chili Bar to Salmon Falls features over 20 named rapids and countless waves in between. Most paddlers run the river with a commercial rafting company. Recreation in the Fraser River Basin This story is from the Greater Vancouver Book by Chuck Davis. You can find more stories from the book or even purchase it here
by Kim Joslin
Beautiful British Columbia, with its abundance of natural areas, provides a playground for numerous recreational activities. Each year people from all over flock to the province to enjoy leisurely pursuits in the mountains, on rivers, lakes and the ocean. But as the population grows and development pressures increase, especially in the Greater Vancouver area, this natural experience is threatened. Environment Canada, through its Fraser River Action Plan, commissioned a study in 1994 to determine the value that British Columbians themselves place on recreational experiences. The study focussed on water-based recreational activities in the Fraser River basin—on or around the Fraser River itself, its tributaries like the Nechako, Thompson, Coquitlam and Pitt rivers, its lakes and streams. Recreational activities on or around water prove to be very popular. One in four British Columbians takes part in activities such as hiking, river rafting, swimming and camping in the Fraser basin. They spend an average of 24 days per year enjoying our natural wilderness through these pastimes. In comparison to the province as a whole, even more Greater Vancouver residents take part in these activities. About one in three participate in recreational activities in the Fraser basin, averaging 22 days a year.
