TCM Hospital: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SlE) And Traditional Chinese Medicine In China
The cause of SLE is unknown, but most of scholars hold the view that it may be related to autoimmunity and genetic factors. Many organs and connective tissues of the body may be involved. The disease is often accompanied with many serological and immunological changes. It is seen more often in young females. In TCM the disease is categorized as "xu lao" (consumptive diseases), "shui zhong" (edema), "bi zheng" (arthralgia-syndrome) "wen du fa ban" (epidemic disease with eruptions), etc. Main Points of Diagnosis 1.The onset of disease is slow, early symptoms include fatigue, anorexia, emaciation, arthralgia, low fever, skin rash, photosensitization, etc. The initial symptoms are usually atypical, and diagnosis is difficult. 2. Functional damages of multiple organs: As the disease progresses, there appear functional damages of the liver, kidney, cardiovascular, digestive and nervous systems. Cardiovascular and renal damages are predominant features and renal failure is the major cause of death. 3. Accessory examinations

Chinese herbal medicine effective in IBS An Australian study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association lends strong scientific support to the traditional use of Chinese herbs in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The authors believe theirs is the first clinical study to rigorously document the effectiveness of Chinese herbal medicine in the treatment of IBS - and the first to incorporate traditional Chinese diagnosis and treatment methods for IBS into a strictly controlled, conventional study model [Bensoussan et al The randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study involved 116 people with active IBS recruited from hospitals and private gastroenterology practices in Sydney, Australia. Patients were diagnosed first by gastroenterologists using standard western diagnostic methods, and then by Chinese herbalists according to the principles of Chinese medicine. Forty-three subjects were randomized to receive a standard Chinese herbal formula "considered to regulate and strengthen bowel function," 38 took individualized herbal formulas, and 35 received a placebo deemed to be indistinguishable from the herbal treatments. Treatments were administered by capsule. Individualized treatments were custom-designed by the Chinese herbalists, who also supervised treatment during the course of the trial. Each subject worked with only one herbalist for the duration of the study. Results were evaluated by gastroenterologists after eight weeks and again at the end of the 16-week treatment period.

Oriental Medicine Oriental Medicine utilizes a number of different modalities for treatment. It is based on the theory of energy flow (Qi, or Chi), which circulates throughout the body. The energy flows through channels (or meridians) and can be accessed at specific points along those channels. Acupuncture, being the most readily known aspect of oriental medicine, can be traced back some 8,000 years. The most widely known of the theories of oriental medicine is the theory of Yin and Yang. The earliest references can be dated back to the Xia dynasty (2205 BCE-1766 BCE).

TCM Hospital: Urinary Calculus And Traditional Chinese Medicine In China
Urinary calculus is a common disease in the urinary system, including calculus of the kidneys, urethral calculus, vesical calculus and urethral calculus. This disease incidence appears obviously in certain areas. The disease belongs to the categories of "sha lin" (strangury form urolithiasis), "shi lin" (strangury caused by urinary calculus) and "xue lin" (strangury complicated by hematuria) in TCM. Main Points of Diagnosis 1.Symptoms 1) Calculus of the Kidneys: There is a dull pain in the lower loins of the affected side, when the stones in the kidney radiates along the ureter to the lower abdomen and the perineal region which is associated with different degrees of hematuria. If the case turns into a complicated infection, the patient may have fever and pus cells in the urine. 2) Ureteral Calculus: In the lumbar region there is an acute pain which is often associated with hematuria. When the stones happen to be in the upper 1/3 part of the ureter, the pain will be in the costovertebral angle region and radiate to the part above iliac crest and external side of the abdomen. When the stones descend, the region of pain will also come down with the pain radiating to the thigh, testicle or vulva region.

I have developed a unique practice that integrates traditional, alternative, and modern healing practices. My patients seek me out for the treatment of painful musculoskeletal conditions where I combine the treatment modalities of Acupuncture, soft tissue manipulation, trigger point therapy, herbs, and Qi Gong. Many patients come to me when they find that standard medical practice, while effective in what it has to offer, does not offer a complete treatment for their condition. The emphasis in my practice is the use of treatment modalities that promote self-healing and treat the root causes of conditions. These treatments can work in conjunction with the best medical treatments available by standard Western medical practitioners to improve the effectiveness of medications and other procedures. On this web site you can find out more about the Acupuncture, Massage, Herbs, and Qi Gong services available from my practice. There is information for those who are new to the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine and more specific information on treatments of conditions for those who want it. 2/16/05 Leo's Blog Page.
