Third class is referred to as Standard Mail Fourth class is referred to as Package Services STANDARD MAIL Standard Rates are considerably lower than the first class single piece rates because Standard mail must be presorted and delivered to the post office. Addressing & Mailing offers presorting and delivery services for all University units. Standard Mail typically consists of circulars, booklets, catalogs, photographs, drawings, books, and other printed items weighing less than 16 ounces each. There are two categories in Standard Mail: Nonprofit Rate and Presort Standard Rate. The post office does not guarantee delivery of Standard Mail within a given time period. Generally, delivery within the metropolitan area is within three-five business days; deliveries to the East and West Coasts can take up to ten business days.Nonprofit Standard or Presort Standard mail has two size categories, letter and non-letter. Letter pieces must be no larger than 6 1/8"x11 1/2" or less than 3 1/2"x5" ( See Appendix B See information on non machinable surcharge ). All other mail is considered non-letter for rate purposes.

    Plant expansion
The Ada Hayden Herbarium is growing with a new addition to its collection
It's taken more than 130 years for the Ada Hayden Herbarium to accumulate over 430,000 dried and pressed plant specimens.
In one fell swoop that number will increase by about half.
In the coming months, the Hayden Herbarium will be the recipient of approximately 235,000 plant specimens from the herbarium at the University of Iowa as that institution closes down its herbarium operations. For more than a year, the two herbariums have been in discussions to bring the University of Iowa collection to Ames.
"This is a pretty exciting opportunity," said Lynn Clark, professor of botany and the director of the Hayden Herbarium since 1989. "Their plant specimens will be a welcome addition to our collection."
The Hayden Herbarium is a large mine of data. It currently ranks 18th in term of size of the collection among university herbaria in the nation. It is also within the top 30 overall in size of more than 600 U.S. herbaria, including those at botanical gardens and museums, including the Smithsonian Institution.

Chapter 2. What happens to traditional knowledge and resources ? Documento(s) 12 de 37
A large quantity of goods, resources, and knowledge flow from traditional communities. In this chapter, we discuss where plant and human genetic material, knowledge, and articles like works of art are kept for conservation, scientific, and other purposes or, in some cases, traded commercially. Knowledge, biological resources, manufactured goods, works of art, and even human remains can be sought-after items to be collected, stored, and sometimes bought and sold. Transactions involving these items can take place at great distances from their source, and it can be difficult, or even impossible, to determine their final destination once they have left the source community.
Conservation centres for biogenetic resources
Human, animal, and plant material is needed for research. Researchers must examine and analyze the material they collect and preserve it for posterity. Biological resources (perhaps accompanied by information about them) may be conserved at the site of origin or in another place or country. Ex situ conservation centres may be botanic gardens, museums, seed or gene banks, or laboratories owned by governments, intergovernmental agencies, or corporations.
Plant genetic material
Collection and storage of plant genetic material has been taking place for centuries, as the result of curiosity, for taxonomic research, or for commercial purposes as the global market for

  • The General Herbarium of Vascular Plants (1,155,000 specimens) consists of collections from all over the world and from almost all families. It is estimated that 11,300 of the worlds known 14,000 genera are represented. It holds an estimated 25,000 type-specimens under registration. The herbarium is especially rich in material from the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greece, Spain, Macaronesia, Africa, SE-Asia, Mexico, W.-Indies, Central America and South America. The Herbarium of Danish Vascular Plants (230,000 specimens) consists of collections from all parts of Denmark from the 18th century up to now. It includes at least 1500 species and is the largest collection of Danish plants. Many of the specimens depicted in Flora Danica are kept in this collection. Additionally, the herbarium comprises the file of the Topographical-Botanical Investigation of Denmark as well as the unpublished sources of the Botanical Locality Register.

Top pieces are the remains of large Mosasaurs and turtles and fragmentary remains of terrestrial dinosaurs. But also the stratigraphic collection of ammonites and echinoderms are of prime importance since these fossils may serve as guide or index fossils on the basis of which various chalk deposits may be correlated. Other collections includes samples of echinoderms, bryozoans, brachiopods with some 50 holotypes and paratypes. Finally, the collection appeared to include species still not identified, and thus new to science.

The existing data will be collected by ZEFOD in a more systematic way and presented on the Internet as an expandable, interactive information network for a broad range of users in science, administration and the general public. Apart from an overview of collections, the information system ZEFOD intends to provide a structural and content-oriented description of biological collections in Germany.
ZEFOD is funded by the Federal Research Ministry (BMBF) within the framework of the research focus “Biodiversity and Global Change (BIOLOG)”. ZEFOD is constituting the national node for BioCASE ("Biodiversity Collection Access Service for Europe") and is a direct contribution to international initiatives like the 'Global Taxonomic Initiative (GTI)'‚ the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the 'Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF)'.

It comes weekly with the daily newspaper 'der Tagesanzeiger', well known for its sharp critizism of transgenic crops. Thanks to Jens Katzek and his crew for the translation into English. The interview of Ingo Potrykus is sort of a breakthrough in Swiss journalism, since too often the developers and scientists are not heard properly, here an example proving the contrary." - Klaus Ammann

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PETER’S KUNSTKAMMER
COLLECTIONS OF PETER’S KUNSTKAMMER NATUR-CABINET A copy of the mineralogical collection acquired by Peter I in Germany in 1716. I n the 18th century speculation about the Earth’s composition bordered on the preposterous. The well-known mineralogist Lehmann, for example, stated that «the veins of ore we bare during excavations are nothing but branches of an enormous trunk rooted in the very core of the Earth». The budding science of mineralogy was a descriptive one. It was just making its first attempts to systematize the material according to indistinct exterior characteristics. Russian polymath Mikhail Lomonosov tried to establish a solid theoretic foundation for the young science.
One of Lomonosov’s main interests was the origin of amber. This mineral was well-known in the North of Russia: it was called «the incense of the sea». Elizabeth’s court valued it for its decorative qualities. In the 18th century it was generally believed that amber was created as a result of a chemical reaction between sulfuric acid and «stone oil», i.e. petroleum. Lomonosov, on the other hand, tried to prove that such a phenomenon was impossible. He made flies and other insects trapped within amber pieces his witnesses. Lomonosov also paid attention to the crystal structure of different minerals. He tried to establish a link between the exterior shape of a mineral and its inner structure. The prominent scholar pointed out five origins of minerals: compression, fixation, cornation, build-up and intrusion. Surprisingly, modern science also recognizes these processes, but now they have complex scientific terms like «coagulation» and «diagenesis».
