The students will be asked to make general observations about the garden. They will choose a plant to study, making a drawing of it and then trying to find a reference to it in an identification guide. After the Bastyr guide checks it off, the student will do an each one teach one activity. Once all the students have had a chance to teach all the material to each other, we will hold an inquiry discussion on what makes a good garden.

Research Needs in Glacier
Plants
Background Research Needs Native plants Analyze human use of wild berries. Each year unknown quantities of wild berries are collected and exported from the Park for human consumption. The impact of this loss of biomass, nutrients, energy, and forage is completely unknown. Perform a Level 2 vascular plant inventory. Desired results include: developing a thorough inventory of plant species in the park, quantifying the distribution and abundance of species of concern (e.g., locally rare native species and habitats, invasive exotic species, species-area relationships, species affinities to cover types), and developing an unbiased series of plots suitable for future long-term monitoring. Determine the abundance and distribution of plant species as they define habitats of concern such as wetland fens. Assess the completeness of rare plant inventories and their correlation with habitats of concern. Inventory and map selected populations of rare plants.

Handouts Herbarium Project Gathering Leaves
  • Put list of key skill leaves on board or transparency Have 2 lists: required and extra credit Students need a clipboard or slick surfaced notebook Tear off strips of masking tape and place on notebook Label strips of tape Take extra tape and pens outside Give each student a sack Take Playground map for tree identification Take class to each tree to gather specimens Remind students that leaves need to be press size (especially sycamore
  • Putting in Presses
  • Students work in 4 or 5 groups (number of presses) Use a marker to write names of leaves and student names on newspaper. Make sure leaves do not overlap or hang out. Students write names on outside of newspapers with markers or bright pens. Place newspapers between blotter paper with cardboard on outside. Place in presses and leave about a week.
  • Gluing Leaves on Paper
  • Have 1 size of poster board (construction paper not recommended) Saves time if students have labels ready before day we glue Label should go in lower left corner Glue stick works great for labels, or use glue/water mixture

Winona H. Welch (1896-1990) was a bryologist specializing in Fontinaceae, and later, the Hookeraceae, at DePauw University in Greencastle Indiana. Welch and Truman G. Yuncker were responsible for the development of the herbarium at DePauw. In 1987, Welch donated that herbarium, which she had named the Truman Yuncker Herbarium upon his death in 1964, to The New York Botanical Garden. On the occasion of her ninety-second birthday, a Winona H. Welch Festschrift was published in Brittonia. Winona Welch was born on a farm in Jasper County, Indiana, three miles northeast of the town of Goodland. She had decided to go to DePauw as a child because she liked the name. But first she had to earn the money. She went for teacher training to Indiana State Normal School at Terre Haute and the College at Winona Lake, Indiana. She taught at the Wildasin, Hancock, and Brook public schools during World War I. In 1919, she entered the freshman class of DePauw. She wanted to major in chemistry but was discouraged from doing so by the head of the department. She turned to biology and from there developed a concentration in botany under Truman G. Yuncker. As his assistant in the herbarium, she helped mount 4,000 specimens collected by Earl Grimes from an area around Russellville, Indiana. Yuncker encouraged her to go to graduate school at the University of Illinois, where she studied plant taxonomy under William Trelease and plant ecology under W.B. MacDougall. Her masters thesis was an enumeration of the plants in Jasper County.

    Kurzinfo Herbar

The Franklin County Historical Society has asked our students to help them gather information about our local shrub steppe habitat and develop a "Then & Now" presentation about their findings in regards to the Corps of Discovery. Southgate second graders and Canyon View fifth graders will survey plants and animals currently found in their canyon areas. Amistad fourth and fifth graders and Canyon View fifth graders will also research how the area looked 200 years ago when Lewis and Clark came through our community. Telecommunicating among Canyon View, Southgate and Amistad will enable students to compare their results and establish an outline of criteria for other "cyber-campsites" along the Lewis and Clark trail. Kennewick students will locate schools along the original trail in Washington and Oregon and ask them to contribute data to the cybertrail. We did this inquiry-based engaged learning project in conjunction with the Fermilab Education Office in Batavia, Illinois.
