Herbariums Holistic Approach in a DNA-Age
As botanical studies increasingly focus on the micro-particles of plants, herbariums are libraries of history and diversity. The Lynchburg (VA) News and Advance rediscovers a green library of 60,000 plants , the college herbarium that two local botanists began assembling in 1927. Ruskin Freer and his successor Gwynn Ramsey collected and catalogued specimens in the beautiful and plant-rich country along the Blue Ridge Parkway. And Ramsey, now 73, believes there are 1000 more plants out there to find. Posted by on 11/22 at 12:26 PM

Locusts Devour Gardens in Israel
Shades of the Old Testament, a swarm of locusts has descended on the Red Sea resort town Eilat. Farmers and gardeners are worried, gourmets delighted. A plague of locusts has struck southern Israel, stripping gardens bare and denuding whole groves of palm trees. Posted by Julie on 11/23 at 09:26 AM

    Anlage eines Herbariums
    Kurzbeschreibung

    Weed identification resources
Environmental weeds can cause substantial damage to natural ecosystems, but it's not always easy to tell when a plant is a weed. If your garden seems to be 'going bush' or you've noticed a plant that seems out of place or that's dominating a natural habitat, you can use these resources to identify a weed and find out if it is a weed in your area. Remember that Australian native plants can become weeds outside their native range too. Plants that are native to your area may be listed as weeds on websites from other parts of the world, so make sure you find out the native range of plant before treating it as a weed. Websites As a starting point, many of these online resources have good quality photos and list plants by common and scientific names. You could also enter a plant name into your favourite internet search engine to find information or images.

The principal herbarium is that of A. de Wever (1874-1947) of Nuth. In 1912, de Wever was one of the founding members of the Natuurhistorisch Genootschap in Limburg. Between 1890 and 1943 he collected plants from the whole of southern Limburg, a collection which, by its being well-documented, ranks amongst the most important regional herbariums in The Netherlands. On the basis of this herbarium detailed studies into the flora and vegetation at the start of this century could be carried out. The de Wever Herbarium consists of c. 20,000 paper covers with a total of some 60,000 specimens. Of the smaller herbariums those of J.L. Rieter and L. Grégoire are of importance. Part of the collection are also a few pharmacist herbariums, the principal one of which is the mosses herbarium of 1770 of the Maastricht chemist J.L.
