Updated: 3 July 2005 Herb Garden Purpose
To demonstrate some of the many culinary, aromatic and medicinal plants suitable for this area. Habitat
This is primarily a full sun garden that receives some afternoon shade and has a few larger plants that provide shade. The original garden was established in the naturally occurring silty marine clay (Saanichton). By the time the need for sand amendment was recognized, many plants had become too well established to be moved easily, so sand is added as specific areas are renovated. Features This garden incorporates design elements for useful plant gardens that go back through monastery and cloister gardens of medieval Europe to pre-Christian household gardens. These elements include the circle within the square, the solar orientation, the sundial, and the small beds that make it possible to cultivate and harvest plants without treading on the soil. Plants are selected and placed along the paths so that there is visual and aromatic attraction as well as plant maintenance and harvesting activity throughout the garden throughout the year. The Arbor Gate (15635 FM 2920 in Tomball) dedicates its new Madalene Hill Herb Garden at 2 p.m. Sunday. It's not the first to honor her: The Knot Garden at the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C., was dedicated by Houston benefactors Maurice and Susan McAshan in the 1980s. ADVERTISEMENT The new garden features herbs Hill helped establish, all suitable for our Southern climate: 'Arp' rosemary. Hill discovered this extra-hardy, upright, flavorful rosemary on a snowy January day decades ago on a visit to a favorite cousin in Arp.

by Rachel McLeod Planning Next Year's Garden Seed catalogues are here already. They seem to come earlier each year to remind us that spring will surely come and soon we will be planning for next year's garden. But now is the time to look back and see what we would like to change to improve our garden or to make it easier to maintain. Groundcovers are the secret of successful low maintenance gardens. They will prevent weeds, preserve moisture in the soil and once established will remain neat and tidy with the minimum of care. The reason I am writing about this in a herb column is because many herbs make excellent ground covers and can be used anywhere in the garden. There is a suitable herb for almost any location. A grass lawn is a great deal of work with regular time consuming mowing. One alternative is a thyme lawn which we have as part of our front garden. It has taken time to establish but is now doing well. We used a mixture of very low creeping thymes, both white and purple and allowed some slightly taller patches of mother of thyme to grow for contrast. As a result the lawn has flowers from June to September. And it is always a joy to sit or lie and relax with the thyme scent rising with every movement. However a thyme lawn needs full sun so it is not suitable for every situation.

Using Wild Plants As I write this we are still in the grip of winter...it is cold. But I know that by the time you read this, Spring will be here and plants will be emerging from dormancy. This is the time when many people follow the examples of the pioneers before us and go out to collect wild foods and herbs as they become available. As well as those we use for meals, there is another vast amount of wild plants we may collect for medicinal uses such as yarrow flowers and red clover or, to get on-the-spot relief from bites or stings, such as plantain leaves or dock. If we are going to use wild plants as food or medication we have to be responsible for ourselves. This means that..... 1. We must be certain that we can identify a plant correctly in all stages of its growth. For example fiddleheads are the young shoots of the Ostrich fern found growing in clumps in the marsh. They are delicious and generally considered safe. But to the uninitiated the young shoots of bracken could look very much the same. However the bracken shoots grow singly and are spread out over a dry area. Bracken has been found to be carcinogenic and should not be eaten. (The Ostrich Ferns are particularly easy to recognize as they have spore bearing dark brown fronds rising out of the clump; the bracken does not.)

Herbs
It wasn’t that long ago, when herbs were something we bought only in little round bottles and used them for things like spaghetti and pizza. Or we received as a wedding present a spice rack that "pre-packaged" herb set that we dutifully hung on the wall and then maybe used the oregano and garlic, and had no idea what to do with the others like marjoram, thyme, anise and curry. But times have changed. Herb gardens are as popular as perennial gardens. We are now growing and using fresh herbs in everything from pesto to potpourri. Even if you don’t grow them, they now come fresh in the grocery store in small packages. If you are new to growing herbs you may want to start out with some of the easier herbs. Annuals include basil, dill and cilantro. Easy perennials include chives, rosemary and thyme. Most herbs do best in a sunny, well-drained location. Placing them in a location close to your kitchen makes it easier for a quick harvest and use in the kitchen. Herbs are also an easy addition to the container garden. Either a mixed pot of herbs or mixed in with summer annuals, they grow and produce an abundant supply of fresh herbs. Herb gardens are becoming a beautiful as well as functional addition to the home landscape. Herbs come in a variety of colors, heights, and textures. Many have pleasing blooms along with their wonderful fragrance. Designing with herbs is a whole new way to incorporate herbs in the landscape. Consider what herbs you want to growwhat color are they, when do they bloom, how tall do they grow and are they bushy or spreading in growth habit. Then begin to combine them. If you don’t want all herbs, mix them in with traditional landscaping. Take some precautions if mixing in with other plantsavoid pesticide usage near herbs. With herbs, you are eating entire plant parts, and many have fuzzy or crinkled leaves. Don’t plant herbs for culinary uses near pesticide-needy plants.
