Creating Herb Gardens
Inspiring Aromatic Adventures
Herbs arouse kids' curiosity and interest because they thoroughly engage the senses. What better motivator for student investigations than plants that feel cool, smell great, and can turn mere tomatoes into pizza sauce? Their life stories, it turns out, are fascinating too. After all, these humble plants were early humans' first medicines, food preservatives, and cosmetics. And that's just the beginning. The word "herb" conjures up visions of soothing teas or the green flecks in spaghetti sauce, but just what is an herb? Some people define it as any plant or plant part used as an ingredient for flavor, fragrance, or healing. Spices, it seems, could fit the same bill. Here's the difference: Herbs are usually defined as plants of temperate climates whose leaves are harvested for use. Spices, on the other hand, tend to be of tropical origin; we use their roots (ginger), fruits (vanilla pods), flowers (cloves), seeds (pepper), or bark (cinnamon). They both differ from other plants in that they contain some active ingredient that is useful to us. But the

Get big flavor from herb gardens
BY KATHY VAN MULLEKOM
Daily Press (Newport News, Va.)
NEWPORT NEWS, Va.
(KRT) - Herb gardens offer special appeal for beginning gardeners, especially if you have only a small yard or patio for growing them. "Herbs are easy to grow, thrive in poor soil and don't require much space," says Shirley Hill of Williamsburg, Va. "They require little care, only an occasional weeding, and require little water," says Hill. "Not only are they attractive, but the colors and scents add another dimension to the garden as well as the kitchen." You can't beat that recipe for gardening success, can you? In addition, herbs, which typically come from the hot, dry Mediterranean area of our world, love heat something we've had in surplus this summer. You can also grow them in large pots, as long as you make sure drainage is good.

TABLE OF CONTENTS:
OVERVIEW
There are few things in life as good as your own herb, grown by yourself at home out in the garden and indoors in pots... Oregano, Dill, Basil, Sage and other herbs are all easy to grow. Mint will take over the whole yard if you let it. Fresh mint and cilantro are incredible in salads and oriental dishes. But it all comes down to a truly motivational herb that is your friend and mine, a great healer and teacher to those that know it well. Most people think of gardens as a seasonal, yearly project, but it's actually less time consuming and more rewarding to keep the garden going year round. If one were to attempt to grow year round, indoor gardening techniques will be needed at least during winter to keep the garden producing. You will have herb fresh at all times, there is no worry of mass storage through the winter and spring, it requires less space, and once established, requires only minimal attention every week to keep it producing at optimal levels.

William Shakespeare must have loved gardening as his works include many mentions of common herbs in Elizabethan England. A Shakesperean herb garden is a creative theme garden that even a beginner can manage. This article dicusses the planning and cultivation of the herb garden and lists several of the herbs most referenced in his works. Herbs have been prized through the centuries for their many uses from medicinal to culinary. Tribal peoples and healers learned of their medicinal uses and passed their secrets on generation to generation. Even today, many modern medicines have an herbal basis. Today, herbs remain popular for use in aromatherapy, natural cosmetics and remedies as well as for cooking. The most popular use of herbs remains in the kitchen, where they are valued for their aromatic and flavorful contributions to cooking. A kitchen herb garden is essential for many culinary aficionados. Growing herbs is an ideal project for someone with limited space and time to devote to gardening. An herb garden based on plants and flowers mentioned in William Shakespeare’s works is an interesting way to experience the aromas and flavors that were a part of Elizabethan England. The plants selected for this garden are a combination of herbs that were popular during his life and provide a mix of medicinal, culinary, and aromatic herbs. Keep in mind that all of the medicinal qualities of the herbs are from historical sources and that you should check with your physician before ingesting any herb as a medical treatment. All of the plants rare readily available and can be successfully grown by the average gardener.

Few people realise how easy most herbs are to grow. Many herbs should be planted in a well drained soil in a sheltered, sunny site but some prefer moist cool conditions. Place your herb garden as close as you can to the kitchen door or at least next to a paved area for easy access. Choose a site with sun for at least half a day. If your garden is small you can blend your herbs into your flower borders or as edging. Here are some successful ways to grow herbs. CONTAINERS Herbs can be grown successfully in containers provided they have adequate drainage. Containers make it easy to group plants accordingly to how vigorously they grow and the type of care that they need. Because they are portable herbs in containers can be moved into a convenient position outside the kitchen door when they are ready to use. Most herbs will thrive in containers that are at least 15cm deep. However fennel, which has a long root that needs deep soil, and bay trees, which are big when mature, are best in large containers such as a half barrel. Window boxes can be used for growing upright and prostrate herbs. For ease of maintenance grow the herbs in adequate pots. Fill the window box with gravel burying the pots up to the rim. This will make watering easier. Terracotta pots are an attractive popular choice but need frequent watering in dry spells.

Herbs have been used for seasoning, medicine, fragrance, and sorcery for thousands of years. Tarragon, rosemary, and thyme are among the most ancient of seasonings, yet there are few culinary achievements that can top good poultry roasted with these three herbs. Most herbs can be grown successfully with a minimum of effort. Several are drought-tolerant, some are perennials, and many are resistant to insects and diseases. They are versatile plants, providing flavors for seasoning food and fragrances for room-freshening potpourri. And with their enticing scents, diverse textures, attractive shapes, and countless shades of green and gray, herbs are often used to make a landscape that appeals to the senses of touch and smell as well as sight. The classic use for herbs in the landscape is the formal garden. Many intricate designs have been drawn and planted using the beauty of herb plants to enhance the pattern of the garden; diamonds, compasses, and knots are among the most popular designs. The knot garden is especially intriguing; herbs with various textures and colors are planted carefully and trimmed neatly to create the appearance of ropes looping over and under each other. The effect is striking, especially when viewed from an upper-story window. Theme gardens are also popular. There are Biblical gardens, scent gardens, tea gardens, witch's gardens, kitchen gardens, and apothecary gardens, to name a few.

An Herb-Covered Garden Path Herb of the Month
An Herb-Covered Garden Path
In addition to their obvious utility of going from here to there, paths do show off separate beds to their advantage, making your garden's design more evident. But half the fun of arriving at a particular garden spot is how you reach it. Crushed stone, pebbles, brick, flagstone, wooden slabs (cross-sections of tree trunks) are popular path materials for reasons of comfort, appearance, cost, and maintenance or choose our decorative Native Texas Limestone Garden Pieces. However several herbs make not only attractive path-covers but are easy to grow, low maintenance, and smell and feel delightful between naked toes. Adding herbs to a walkway that's too difficult to reach with a mower (and too time-consuming to hoe), or to stepping stones needing a filler is a solution, practical and pleasurable. Drought resistant herbs such as rosemary and thyme do well in dry, sunny walkways that would otherwise not support green life. For damp wooded areas which see little sun, most

National Herb Garden
The National Herb Garden was a gift from The Herb Society of America to the American people. It stands as one of the finest examples of how a diverse group of people and organizations working together can achieve a dream. For over twenty years, the National Herb Garden has fulfilled The Herb Society of America’s mission to promote the knowledge, use and delight of herbs. The garden includes hundreds of species and cultivars of herbs used for everything from perfume to cooking to medicine to flower arranging. Every plant is labeled, and interpretive signage helps the visitor understand the herbs in context with their history and use.
Constructed on a two-and-a-half-acre site at the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington, D.C., the garden was completed in 1980 after fifteen years of planning and fundraising by a group of dedicated Society members. In the end, $200,000 was raised by The Society and was matched by a $200,000 grant from the U.S. government.
More than two decades later, The Herb Society of America is still committed to the success of the herb garden. Funds from The Society support a garden intern and HSA members from the area volunteer frequently. Recent enhancements in lighting, irrigation, signage and walking paths keep the garden beautiful and accessible to all.

Elder
Sambucus nigra September continues to be busy in the herb garden. There is still plenty of harvesting to be done and seed to collect. Sloes will be starting to ripen, elderberries can be collected for jams, chutneys and jellies. Blackberries will be ripening in the hedgerows too.
You can start to cut back and divide some of the more established perennial herbs. But remember to leave un-cut some of the larger, hollow stemmed plants, and those with tussocky bases as overwinter shelter for beneficial insects.
Things to do in the herb garden this month
  • Harvest and dry roots of angelica, comfrey, sweet cicely, marshmallow, horseradish, Orris (Florentine Iris), liquorice and valerian. Collect and dry teasels for winter decoration , to use as rabbit defences around tender plants and to stick into bare soil to keep cats away. Leave some standing, however, to provide food for goldfinches. Continue gathering seed of caraway, coriander, dill, angelica, chervil, anise and fennel

Planting an Herb Garden: Part One
There are many reasons to plant an herb garden. What is yours? Will it provide the herbs you need for your favorite dishes? Will it become an aromatic and scent-filled garden that will attract butterflies and other likeable insects? Will it solve a problem spot? Do you have an interest in useful plants; in teas or medicinal herbs, perhaps, or dye plants, or herbals for crafts? Then again, maybe you have always loved herbs and herb gardens and want to grow a beautiful, historically accurate garden, or simply, a well-planned garden that shows the many wonderful qualities of herbs to best advantage. Whatever your reason to grow herbs, there is a garden you can grow. Herbs are undemanding and easy to care for. All they need is a spot with at least five or six hours of sun. They will grow in almost any kind of soil, and do not require lots of watering. Herb gardening is the perfect choice for the beginning gardener, because herbs are easy to cultivate and grow so rapidly a novice can achieve almost instant success. But experienced gardeners derive great pleasure from herbs as well. Planning and planting a beautiful herb garden is very rewarding, and there are so many herbs and so many things to do with them, you can never run out of interesting new challenges. If you have never grown an herb garden, here is the advice most experts give for getting started.
