Indoor herb garden
Do you want herbs year-round? Plant an indoor, winter, herb garden. Select a container that will hold several plants and provides good drainage. Clay, wood or ceramic pots work well. Or, use multiple containers, each with a different kind or herb. If you have herbs in your garden, fall is a great time to divide them. Perennial herbs such as parsley, sage, mint and chives can be divided in the fall. When dividing these plants, place some back into the garden and pot one or two for your indoor herb garden. Tender perennials such as bay, rosemary, pineapple sage and others will be killed by a hard frost. These are best grown in pots year round. Bring plants indoors prior to frost and set them where they will get maximum sunlight to encourage growth. You can enjoy fresh herbs throughout the winter. For more information, see the following Colorado State Cooperative Extension fact sheet(s).

Herbs riding high, especially healthy ones
November 3, 1999 Web posted at: 11:04 a.m. EST (1604 GMT) (AP) Herbs are riding a high wave of popularity these days, especially plants deemed good for your health. As evidence of the interest in herbal medicine, the New York Botanical Garden held a two-day symposium this fall featuring lectures on healing plants through the ages. The creators of the wide-ranging program overlooked little related to herbs. One lecture centered on slowing the aging process and another on using herbs to ease stress One could learn about American Indian curing strategies, or be taken back to the Indian subcontinent to delve into the rise of Ayurveda 2,500 years ago, considered the first complete medical system based on holistic therapies.

Current Situation
Growing these versatile plants in our southern climate can be a challenge. The keys to success with herbs is plant selection and site preparation. Don't expect to harvest armloads of English lavender blooms or great handfuls of French tarragon. Sage and thyme can also be difficult to grow, disappearing mysteriously after a few years. Don't blame yourself. These perennial herbs should be considered as short-lived plants in our hot, humid climate. Count yourself among the lucky ones if you can get 3 or 4 productive years from these herbs before they pass on. Although our climate makes it difficult to grow some herbs, there are many that we can grow very successfully. We just have to select the right ones! You can harvest armloads of basil, lemon balm, Texas tarragon, (Tagetes lucida), catnip, German chamomile, Spanish Lavender (Lavandula stoechas), chives, mints, and many others. These herbs thrive in our part of the South. A major cause of failure with herbs in the South (other than climate) is poor drainage of the soil. Planting your herbs in a well-drained bed area, a container or raised bed, will more likely result in success. This is of particular importance for the following herbs that cannot tolerate wet feet: sage, oregano, thyme, lavender, rosemary, French tarragon, and scented geraniums.

A Short History of Herb Garden Design
    by Deirdre Larkin
Practical as well as ornamental, formal herb gardens laid out in simple beds date back to medieval Europe and continue to be popular today, as this contemporary take on a 12th-century garden attests. The earliest visual representation of a formal garden to survive the Middle Ages, found on the St. Gall plan, dates to the ninth century. This master plan for an ideal Benedictine monastery, which was never built as planned, includes a large, rectangular kitchen garden with 18 beds of vegetables and potherbs and a smaller square garden with 16 beds of medicinal herbs. This small healing garden is located next to the doctor's house and near the infirmary. Both gardens are walled and are laid out in two parallel rows of rectangular raised beds, each bed devoted to a single species. This basic, utilitarian design is typical not only of monastic but of other medieval gardens as well. Enclosed gardens of rural manors and townhouses are depicted in a number of 15th-century illuminations in Piero de Crescenzi's popular treatise on horticulture and agriculture

    Welcome
I am not sure what is wrong with me, but I keep having dirty thoughts. Not the kind that are XXX rated, but the kind that make me want to outside and start digging in the yard. It started with small things- I began collecting houseplants and growing chile peppers, then it became a full blown gardening obsession. I can't see a yard or piece of land without thinking, "Hmm, what can I plant there?" I love being outside and I have always been "slightly crunchy", almost granola but not quite. I believe in frugal living, composting, recycling, eating fresh organically grown foods and working with nature, not against it. I love flowers and being surrounded by trees and plants, as you will see here. This is my site, let me show you the lay of the land, so to speak. Dirty Thoughts - I find gardening very peaceful and do some of my best thinking out there. Here are some of my musings and also a collection of gardening quotations and humor from the Web and other sources. So what exactly is in my garden? These pages have detailed information and photos of everything I am growing and even some things I don't have, but just like.

2005 Herb of the Year (Excerpts from the guide 'Oregano and Marjoram: An Herb Society of America Guide to the Genus Origanum') All members of the genus have flowers that occur in spikes; for most species these form a panicle with multiple branched stems growing from a central stalk. In O. onites, the spikes grow in a 'false corymb' (56), forming a convex or flat-topped open inflorescence (102). Corollas may be purple, pink or white depending on the species. In some species flowers are arranged in whorls. The calyx, or small vase-like receptacle that supports and protects the corolla and reproductive organs of the flower, can be bell-shaped or tubular (97) with one or two lips (56). The shape of the calyx is the principal plant character used to distinguish between Origanum species (97). Flower stems can be erect or trailing/cascading (104). Trailing types like the ornamental O. rotundifolium and the cultivar 'Kent Beauty,' a hybrid of O. rotundifolium and another Origanum species, have a graceful, drooping appearance. The leaves (15) and flowering parts of the plant.

    Grow a Healing Garden
Close the medicine cabinet; put on your gardening gloves! by Lauren Picker So what has your garden done for you lately? If it's herbs you're growing, the answer goes well beyond making your cooking more flavorful. A robust herb garden can actually keep you in the bloom of good health. According to researchers with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, herbs are a rich source of antioxidants, which neutralize harmful, cell-damaging substances called free radicals and help fight cancer, heart disease and stroke. In fact, herbs pack a more potent antioxidant punch than fruits and veggies, especially the humble pizza-parlor staple: oregano. One tablespoon of fresh oregano contains as strong a dose of antioxidants as does a medium-sized apple. That's not to say that simply consuming a fistful of oregano a day keeps the doctor away. "Self-care requires self-education," says Rob McCaleb, president and founder of the Herb Research Foundation in Boulder, Colorado. "You have to know what you need and how much to take." In fact, herbs can be dangerous if used incorrectly. If you're pregnant or lactating, or if you are under a physician's care for a medical problem, talk to you doctor before trying any herbal remedy. Used wisely, however, herbs can make a healthy difference in your life, so consider planting some in your backyard or window box. One of the advantages of growing your own is, "you probably won't use pesticides," points out William Obermeyer, Ph.D., vice president of research at

The history of man's use of, and relationship to plants, is a long one. During the time of the hunter-gatherer this association was perhaps mystical but most often based on practicality. Plants were used as food, shelter, weapons, and also as religious objects. As agricultural practices evolved smaller areas of land supported larger and larger communities. The most useful plants (domestic, culinary, medicinal, and religious) were brought into cultivation, planted near dwellings and stored. The ancient Persians developed the first true gardens of aromatic plants, culinary herbs and planted trees. In the Persian capital of Nineveh municipal herb gardens were planted for public use. It was between 54 and 68 AD that Pedacius Dioscorides, a Roman army surgeon, wrote his famous herbal. Borrowing from works of Mithridates and others, he wrote four books dealing with 600 best known plants. Between 700 and 1200 AD European monks translated Arabic and Roman scripts concerning herbs into Latin. Secure in their monasteries, and skilled as copyists and horticulturists, they had the opportunity to grow herbs and other plants. Their first herb gardens were medicinal plant gardens (physic gardens). Future physic gardens in the sixteenth century were associated with either apothecaries or universities. Apothecaries wanted the medicinal plants for curative purposes or for barter. In universities plants were grown for purpose of study. The first university garden was established at the University of Padua, in Italy in 1545.
