Fact sheet N°204
Revised October 2000
Hepatitis B What is hepatitis? Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver, and the most common cause is infection with one of 5 viruses, called hepatitis A,B,C,D, and E. All of these viruses can cause an acute disease with symptoms lasting several weeks including yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice); dark urine; extreme fatigue; nausea; vomiting and abdominal pain. It can take several months to a year to feel fit again. Hepatitis B virus can cause chronic infection in which the patient never gets rid of the virus and many years later develops cirrhosis of the liver or liver cancer. HBV is the most serious type of viral hepatitis and the only type causing chronic hepatitis for which a vaccine is available. Who gets hepatitis B? In much of the developing world, (sub-Saharan Africa, most of Asia, and the Pacific), most people become infected with HBV during childhood, and 8% to 10% of people in the general population become chronically infected. In these regions liver cancer caused by HBV figures among the first three causes death by cancer in men. High rates of chronic HBV infection are also found in the Amazon and the southern parts of Eastern and Central Europe. In the Middle East and Indian sub-continent, about 5% are chronically infected. Infection is less common in Western Europe and North America, where less than 1% are chronically infected.

A third person died Friday and nearly 500 others who ate at a Chi-Chi's Mexican restaurant have fallen ill in the outbreak that has prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to send assistance. New generation of interferon treatment helps hepatitis C
BOSTON, Massachusetts (Reuters) Two industry-sponsored studies in this week's New England Journal of Medicine have found that a new longer-acting form of interferon is far more effective than regular interferon for blocking the virus responsible for chronic hepatitis C. In tests on hundreds of patients, both teams of researchers found that more people who were given weekly injections of peginterferon alfa-2a responded better to the treatment than volunteers given the older, shorter-acting form known as interferon alfa-2a.

I set up this web page as a starting point for anyone who has contracted the Hepatitis C virus (HCV), or for anyone wanting to learn more about Hep C.
Although I wasn't diagnosed with HCV until mid 1992, I believe I contracted the virus either in Nov 1977 or Jan 1980 from blood transfusions I was given during the birth of my children. So that means I have been infected at least 20+ years.
While I don't claim to know all there is to know about HCV, I have read every scrap of research I can find in my quest for knowledge about this 'silent killer' and have tried to incorporate my findings on this site.
I've tried to include a little bit of everything here on A Hepatitis C Primer and hope that all the visitors here will enjoy their stay, and find answers to some of their questions about HCV.

Facts About Hepatitis A For Adults
What is hepatitis A?
Hepatitis A is a highly contagious viral infection of the liver. The virus is found in the stool of infected people. The illness is usually spread by a fecal-oral route, or by putting something in the mouth that was contaminated by the stool of a person with the disease. Symptoms
The effects of hepatitis A infection differ from person to person. Generally, the older the person, the more severe the symptoms. Symptoms may include fever, nausea, vomiting, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), diarrhea, fatigue, abdominal pain, dark urine and appetite loss. Respiratory symptoms, rashes and joint pain may also develop. The average time between exposure to the hepatitis A virus (HAV) and the development of symptoms is about 28 days. Symptoms commonly last for about 4 weeks, but in 20% of people who get the disease, the symptoms may return and continue on and off for up to 15 months. There is no specific treatment for hepatitis A once it is contracted. Prevention
There is a vaccine to protect against HAV infection. Two doses are needed 6 to 12 months apart to ensure long-term protection. International travelers should get the first dose at least 4 weeks prior to their departure.

http://www.nfid.org/factsheets/hepbadult.html
Facts About Hepatitis B For Adults
What is hepatitis B?
Hepatitis B is caused by a highly contagious virus that infects the liver. It affects all age groups and can lead to liver disease, liver cancer and death in many of those afflicted. The virus is found in the blood and body fluids of infected people and can be spread through sexual contact, the sharing of needles or razors, from mother to infant during birth, and by living in a household with a chronically infected person. The hepatitis B virus (HBV) is hardy and can live outside the body for several days. Prevention
Safe, effective hepatitis B vaccines are available. The vaccines are used to protect everyone from newborn babies to older adults. The vaccination series, generally given as 3 doses over a 6 month period, protects those at risk and contributes to the elimination of this silent, highly infectious killer. The hepatitis B vaccine is recognized as the first anti-cancer vaccine because it can prevent liver cancer caused by hepatitis B infection. Symptoms
Hepatitis B is a "silent disease" that often affects many people without making them feel sick. If you do get sick from hepatitis B, the symptoms may be like the "flu." You may lose your appetite, feel extremely tired, have stomach cramps and vomit. If you are more seriously ill, your skin and eyes may turn yellow (jaundiced) and you may need hospitalization. There is no specific treatment for hepatitis B once it is contracted.
