GE's T58 turboshaft engine powered the United States' first helicopter flight more than 45 years ago and continues its importance in military service today.
In 1957, two T58 turboshaft engines, each rated at 1,050 shaft horsepower (shp), replaced a piston engine in a Sikorsky HSS-1F helicopter for the historic first flight of a U.S. jet-powered helicopter.
Within the year, Sikorsky, Kaman and Piasecki Helicopter designed, and began production of, T58-powered helicopters for, respectively, the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy and U.S. Army.
In 1959, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certified for the first time a turbine engine for a helicopter the CT58, a civil version of the T58. That same year, GE began adaptation of T58 technology to produce the LM100 gas turbine/gas generator for marine and industrial applications.
By 1984, when GE ceased production of the T58 and CT58, more than 6,300 GE engines were in service on helicopters throughout the world. In addition, still more of the engines had been produced under license in Japan, Italy, and the United Kingdom.

Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron-264 [HMM-264]
The Black Knight legacy began as Marine Helicopter Transportation Squadron Light 264 on 30 June 1959. In February 1962 it was redesignated Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 264. Since its inception, the Black Knights have been leaders in the development of innovative tactics and at the forefront in the defense of our country. Early history included humanitarian assistance in British Honduras after hurricane Hattie, participation in the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, and the first ever nighttime assault under actual combat conditions into an unsecured landing zone in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. In 1968 the aging UH-34 was retired and the new Boeing-Vertol CH-46 was received. This aircraft proved to be the workhorse of the squadron during operations in the Vietnam War. Through the 1970's to the present the Black Knights have made numerous cruises from the warm waters of the Caribbean to the icy waters of the North Atlantic and to the beaches of the Mediterranean. The squadron has participated in memorable operations at places such as Lebanon, Honduras, Colombia, Turkey, Puerto Rico, Yugoslavia, Haiti, Bosnia-Hertzgovina and Liberia.

Being President involves a great deal of travel, both within the United States and around the world. And because America's President serves not only as our Nation's Head of State, but also as Commander in Chief, he has many special travel needs. Has the President ever visited your community? If so, he arrived with the help of several members of the Armed Forces who, under the direction of the White House Military Office, helped to make the journey a safe one.
The Flying White House Air Force One
The name Air Force One does not belong to any specific aircraft, but instead is the radio call sign used when the President is aboard any United States Air Force plane. Currently, the Air Force provides two Boeing 747-200Bs for presidential use, both adapted to meet the President's unique needs and to make him as safe and comfortable as possible during flight.
Air Force One flies over Mount Rushmore. So that the President can fulfill his duties as Commander in Chief, the airplanes have state-of-the-art communications equipment on board, including secure voice terminals and cryptographic equipment for writing and deciphering classified messages. More than 238 miles of electrical wiring (1,260,000 feet) wind through each craft more than twice the wiring found on an ordinary 747!
The 4,000 square feet of floor space inside Air Force One provide room for a presidential stateroom, an executive dressing room and shower, a conference/dining room, two fully equipped kitchens, a presidential office, a medical treatment room, secretarial offices, six lavatories, and 84 telephones.

An Olympic Legacy In The Sky: Heli-Star Demonstrated Potential For Vertical Flight In Urban Areas
The Centennial Olympic Games are quickly fading into history, but a research and development project conducted in Atlanta during last summer's games could have a long-term impact on improving transportation in crowded cities. Supported by the Federal Aviation Administration , Operation Heli-STAR (Helicopter Short-Haul Transportation and Aviation Research) showed that communications, navigation and surveillance (CNS) equipment based on the Global Positioning System (GPS) could reliably track helicopters operating in large metropolitan areas. "Operation Heli-STAR showed that the technology is here now to do low-altitude traffic control in urban areas," said Charles M. "Chuck" Stancil, manager of the Aerospace Sciences Branch of the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI). "Everything that we planned and designed for the system worked. We could track the aircraft, communicate with them, send weather information, and even change the mission just by using digitized messages." Air traffic control radar now provides the primary means for monitoring aircraft in flight, but ground clutter caused by obstructions such as tall buildings prevents tracking low-altitude flights in urban areas. That has restricted development of helicopter transportation in cities where clogged highways would make vertical flight an attractive alternative to ground transportation for passengers and cargo.

THE NEED
According to the American Trauma Society, trauma is the number one cause of death in the United States for persons under the age of 44. Trauma is defined as an acute personal wound or injury requiring immediate care. Between 140,000 and 160,000 trauma related deaths occur nationwide every year. For each death, at least two permanent disabilities occur, leading to a great loss of productivity and enormous disability costs.
The total annual cost of accidental death and disability in the United States is estimated to exceed $110 billion. Despite the staggering loss of life, productivity and great cost to our society, trauma remains "the neglected disease". For trauma victims, medical treatment within one hour, often referred to as the "Golden Hour", can prevent 20-30 percent of potential deaths and dramatically reduce hospitalization times.

Nationwide, helicopter air ambulance programs are a key vehicle in delivering thousands of trauma victims to trauma centers within the "Golden Hour". Frequently, patients accepted by a hospital for routine care can deteriorate or develop complications requiring immediate transport to another hospital for specialized treatment. Ground ambulance services are not normally staffed to provide the level of patient care required of many critically ill patients. Commitments to county emergency services often limit ground ambulance availability. Patient time outside the hospital environment and the level of patient care required, are important transport considerations.
