Hedgehogs Hedgehogs are amazingly cute little insectivores who can be quite friendly despite their unapproachable prickly appearance. Of course, one must pet a hedgehog very carefully... The pet hedgehog (also known as the African Pygmy Hedgehog ) is originally native to Africa, and is much smaller than the European hedgehog . The pet hedgehog has several color variations. Their backs are covered in short, very sharp spines, but their tummies have a soft short hair coat. If upset, the spines stand erect and form an impenetrable barrier from head to tail, and if they feel very threatened they roll into a complete ball, with only spines showing. However, when calm and content, the spines are laid back and the hedgehog is quite easily handled. For color variations click here: International Hedgehog Club (IHC)
For species location click here: The Hedghoz Choosing a Healthy Hedgehog: You will want to choose a single hedgehog since they are solitary and don’t normally like to share a cage.

Hedgehog Care When you bring you new hedgehog home, place him in his cage and let him have absolute privacy for at least a day. You may pick him up and hold him once or twice for a few minutes the first day, but remember, it will probably be more like a week before he begins to feel at home. Baby hedgehogs need quite a bit of sleep the first month after they come home with you, so don't be too concerned if he sleeps a lot at first. Daily Routine: You will need to attend to your hedgehog's needs on a daily basis. Here are some basic suggestions:
  • Scoop the litter box. Fill the food dish. Provide fresh water. Make sure any mess such as spilled food etc. is cleaned out of the shavings. Clean off any messy toys. Love your pet.
Handling: Housing: Your hedgehog will require a secure home since they are very good climbers and can easily escape from open-topped cages that are designed for animals such as guinea pigs and rabbits. If you do use a cage with an open top, it must have slippery sides that are at least 12" high and a floor space of at least l6” x 24”. A 20 gallon aquarium is ideal. It must also have good circulation and be well lit but not exposed to direct sunlight during the daytime. Place your hedgehogs cage in a comfortable, warm, well lit area that is free of drafts and direct sunlight. They are most comfortable at temperatures of between 65-80 degrees Fahrenheit. (18-27 degrees Celsius) The basic rule of thumb is, if you are comfortable without a sweater, they will do just fine.

CARING FOR HEDGEHOGS
A step forward - caring for hedgehogs in veterinary practice, an article by Tamsin Joiner Morgan, BA (Hons), BSc (Hons), VN
INTRODUCTION
Over the years of working in veterinary practice, I have been surprised by how many people (both the public and general veterinary staff), lack the basic knowledge required to deal with various species of wildlife.
HABITAT
One of the most common examples which I (and I am sure others!) have seen on many occasions is the lack of understanding with regard to the needs of the (western) European species hedgehog (Erinaceus ueropaeus) . Their ease of capture and choice of habitat makes them one of the most common hospitalised wildlife patients (Bexton and Robinson 2003, Stocker 1999). However more often than I care to remember, I have seen a hedgehog being sporadically placed (with bare hands) in a well lit hospital ward cage, with straw as bedding and a saucer of milk and cat food which would be sufficient to feed a cat! Such care quite evidently ignores the basic habitat and nutritional needs of this species, these being:

If you’re looking for a truly unique and unusual pet, you need not look further than a hedgehog. There are 14 species of hedgehogs native to Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. In the United States, the species Atelerix albiventris has been imported purely for being kept as pets, but not released into the wild.
In the wild, hedgehogs live for three or four years, and in good climates they may live seven years or longer. Hedgehogs are nocturnal insectivores that hibernate in colder months. Their diet consists mainly of earthworms, snails, beetles, and caterpillars, but they also eat a large range of other insects. The diet of a hedgehog may vary depending on its environment, and some have even been known to eat carrion, small birds, small mammals, or cracked birds’ eggs. As pets, they enjoy being treated to dog biscuits and pieces of sweet fruit. Hedgehogs have poor eyesight, so they rely mostly on hearing and smell to locate their food.
In the wild in cold climates, hedgehogs usually hibernate during the colder months of the year, but when kept inside as a pet, the hibernation period is either eliminated entirely or very short. During hibernation, a hedgehog will seem dead, because its heart rate drops from 190 beats per minute to 20 beats per minute, and its body temperature is lowered by 20% or more.

Chinchillas
Chinchillas are appealing creatures and are becoming more popular as pets. They are closely related to the porcupine and the guinea pig. They originate from South America. Chinchillas are small and squirrel like. They are very shy animals and can be easily frightened. They are clean and odourless. Their fur is very soft and can be bluish grey, white, silver, beige or black. The female is larger than the male. If pregnant, she can produce 1-5 babies, usually two. Sexual maturity is reached at 8 months and she will be pregnant for 111 days. Babies are weaned at 6-8 weeks and chinchillas usually live for around 10 years. Chinchillas are basically nocturnal. However, in captivity, they can be active through the day. In fact, chinchillas are very active and acrobatic therefore they require as much space as your can give them. A minimum floor space would be I m x 2m and 2m high per chinchilla. Cages must be wire mesh and not wooden. A nest box must be provided of approximately 3Ox25x2Ocm.

Exotic `Fad Pets' Need Special Care, So Do The Homework
By KRISTEN LEVINE Tribune correspondent
Published: Oct 2, 2004
Iguanas and hedgehogs and skunks, oh, my! Those critters and other exotic species make up about 9 percent of the American pet population, an American Pet Product Manufacturers Association survey says. But do they really make good pets? Before taking on an unusual pet, be sure to read up on its environmental and care needs. When such pets develop veterinary or behavioral problems, says Tampa veterinarian Teresa Lightfoot, it usually has something to do with their care. ``It's important for caretakers to be very knowledgeable about the animals native environment and attempt to mimic that in captivity,'' says Lightfoot, who is board certified in avian species. She also sees a variety of exotic species at Florida Veterinary Specialists in Tampa. Some exotics become ``fad pets'' that are popular for 10 to 15 years. Recent examples include potbellied pigs, sugar gliders, prairie dogs and hedgehogs. Not all of the more popular exotics make good companions in captivity.

The basic hedgehog pet care
Learn the basics of hedgehog pet care.
There is a fairly new type of pet that is quickly gaining in popularity with both adults and children; it is the African Pygmy Hedgehog. This cute little creature measures about 6 inches long from snout to tail and on an average, weighs in right at one pound. Small, docile and easily tamed, the hedgehog makes an ideal pet for any type of home including apartments. When acquiring a hedgehog there are a few basic requirements he or she will need. Cage - A large cage is a must. The typical hamster cage with wheel will not provide the needed room a hedgehog needs in which to exercise in. When making a cage, it is important to make it warm (but not hot) and without drafts and of a material that can be easily cleaned. Bedding – Cat litter is not recommended as a bedding product for hedgehogs. When the urine and litter mix, fumes can be produced that may be deadly to the hedgehog. Newspaper makes an excellent bedding material as it allows the hedgehog to burrow while being absorbent and easy to change. Avoid cedar shavings as fumes can be harmful to the pet. Temperature – The ideal temperature for keeping hedgehogs indoors is between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature is too hot, the hedgehog will sleep to avoid the heat.

Hedgehog care
Basic information on the African Pygmy Hedgehog. Housing hygiene and feeding information.
When people first encounter a hedgehog at the pet store, they are usually smitten by their cute appearance and want to immediately purchase one as their own. There are a few things you'll need to know before making such a big decision. Hedgehogs are nocturnal and some can get very irate if woken up during the day. When they are upset or angry or frightened they roll into a ball and erect their quills and may even try to stick you with them by jerking when you try to touch them. If you have small children, this is not the ideal pet to own. If you are still interested in owning one of these sweet pets then there are a few other things you will need to know before bringing them home. You will first need to have adequate housing for your hedgehog. An aquarium will work as a good cage as long as it's roomy and has good ventilation 20-gallon size and above are best, because hedgehogs love to run. You may also want to put an exercise wheel in the cage. Hedgehogs also like to play, so you will want to supply some pet safe toys like a rubber squeaky ball for him to play with. Hedgehogs don't usually climb, but it's still good to have a screen on the top to keep other things like insects out of his cage. For food and water, you can use a sturdy tip proof bowl for food and for water. You can also use a water bottle.
