How do I take care of a hedgehog?
Hedgehogs are small exotic pets that are becoming increasingly popular. Caring for a hedgehog is easy, but they have some special needs.
The hedgehog is an interesting, exotic pet that is becoming very popular. Hedgehogs are cute little furless creatures that are quite timid. According to "Exotic Pet Care" published by Wingers Publishing, hedgehogs are usually friendly. Some mature hedgehogs do not like to be held and will try to get away. Hedgehogs rarely bite, but they may curl up into a ball, puff out their quills, and hiss when frightened. "Exotic Pet Care" goes on to say, hedgehogs will sometimes behave strangely by salivating and foaming at the mouth. They may react this way when something new, such as an unfamiliar odor, is encountered. This behavior is quite normal and should not be a cause for concern. The same article recommends housing a hedgehog in an enclosure that has a solid bottom and sides high enough to prevent escape. Aquariums and pet taxis make good enclosures. They can be lined with pine shavings or shredded newspaper. To help keep the cage clean for a longer period of time, droppings should be removed each day. The entire cage should be thoroughly cleaned at least once a week, depending on the type of bedding being used. If strong cleaners are used, be sure to thoroughly rinse the cage to avoid exposing the hedgehog to harmful fumes. "Exotic Pet Care" suggests equipping the cage with an exercise wheel designed especially for hedgehogs. Wire wheels are not safe for hedgehogs and should not be used. Since hedgehogs are timid creatures, you may want to provide a place to hide within the cage. A paper lunch sack works well, since it is disposable and easily replaced.

To The Rescue!
On Monday the 15th of August Waterford SPCA 's Welfare Officer Andrew Quinn received a call from Deirdre O' Meara reporting a dog trapped at the foot of an inlet near Newtown Cove, Tramore, Co. Waterford. Having enlisted the help of Ger Butler of the Irish Coast Guard it was deemed too unsafe for a team to descend down the cliff face to rescue the dog. It was also agreed that this action would have caused unnecessary stress on the animal . The best course of action that we decided to take was to approach the dog from the sea. Having failed to find a boat owner and with the tide rising a call was put out to the RNLI Inshore Lifeboat at Tramore. 10 mins later the RNLI Boat was at the scene. The craft crewed by Cox'n

http://www.pogstarhedgehogs.com/
Welcome To PogStar Hedgehogs We are a family run hedgehog breeder located in SouthCentral Kansas. From our family to yours, we are in our sixth year of working to breed healthy hedgehogs with excellent temperaments that we can be proud for you to add to your family.
A little bit about Us! William and I purchased our first pet hedgehog while we were still dating back in 1996 and were completely enchanted by what a wonderful and intelligent creature our Annabella was. We never even considered doing more than having hedgehogs as pets until I began to do more research on the internet in late 1998. Our son Connor, then just shy of one year, had become fascinated with watching and babbling at Annabella, who truly seemed to enjoy listening to him and would gladly come out to “talk” whenever she heard him. We were all rewarded by this unusual friendship when Bella became much easier to handle and one of Connor’s first words was “BA”, asking for her. The more I watched their incredible friendship grow, and the more research I did on these intriguing little animals, the more hooked I became. After a great deal of study and thought, I purchased three more hedgehogs in the late winter of 1999, and became USDA licensed as a breeder in April of 2000.
The hedgehogs remained “my” hobby until my pregnancy with Morgan in 2001, when William moved beyond supporting me and building our website, and became involved in the day to day care of the hedgehogs. He quickly went from simply providing me with assistance to enjoying them as much as I do, and has become an important part of not only their basic care, but in the planning and playing that make these creatures such an incredible joy for our entire family.

Hedgehog Care and Maintenance Information
Basic Care Introduction
When trying to decide how to best to care for your hedgehog, you need to consider what their lives are like in the wild. Foragers and hunters by nature, hedgehogs spend a great deal of thought and energy each day finding food. As a small animal, they also spend this time trying to avoid becoming someone else's food. (Most notably large birds.) A hedgehog left to sit in a tiny cage all day with nothing to do will soon become fat, bored, and not a very good pet. Likewise, a hedgehog kept in an area where it constantly feels threatened (extremely high levels of noise and/or activity) will become defensive and skittish thinking it needs to protect itself.
Another thing to consider is the basic needs of all living creatures. Every living creature needs six basic things, whether a fish, a bird, a horse, a human, or a hedgehog. These things are: Space, Air, Shelter, Water, Food, and Stimulus. In the next few paragraphs I'll cover each one briefly as it relates to your pet hedgehog.

  • What is a Hedgehog? Hedgehogs are a small, insectivorous (insect eating) mammal that can be found throughout the world. They are native to England, Europe, Africa and Asia. The hedgehog that is now kept as a pet in North America is the Pygmy Hedgehog from Central Africa.
Since there are no native species of hedgehog in either Canada or the United States, many people still mistake the domestic hedgehog for the porcupine - an entirely different and unrelated animal. While porcupine quills are extremely sharp, barbed and very dangerous, the hedgehog quill is smooth and not nearly as sharp. Petting a friendly hedgehog can be compared to petting a hairbrush - bristly, not prickly.

AFRICAN PYGMY HEDGEHOGS
A CARE, INFORMATION, AND FACT SHEET There are many types of hedgehogs in the world. The one most commonly found in the pet trade is the African Pygmy Hedgehog. For our purposes, we refer to him throughout this care sheet simply as a hedgehog. Hedgehogs can live up to 10 years in captivity if they are properly cared for. Typically, however, the average captive lifespan is more like 4-5 years. Our oldest hedgie Elvira died just over 8 years old. That's the oldest I've heard of around here! To assure that your hedgehog lives a long, comfortable and happy life, there are quite a few things you need to know and learn before you consider purchasing one. For instance, hedgehogs aren't even remotely related to porcupines, which are in fact, rodents. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise! DIET Food A hedgehog's natural food is neither completely soft, nor completely hard. For this reason, you should offer your pet regular treats such as crickets, meal worms, grasshoppers, pinkies and even small, non-toxic frogs (if you can stomach that!). Use your best judgment. Depending upon your cage set-up, feeding live foods may be impractical. For those of you interested in starting a hedgehog family, we do not recommend feeding live food, as hedgehogs are known to eat their babies, and this particular diet may encourage cannibalism in captivity. Remember to always have a small amount of dry food in your hedgehog's cage.

FAQ 7 parts inform on pet care, rare types, and the hedgehog in the wild. How to Say Hedgehog in over 40 Languages http//tiggywinkle.8m.com/lang.html
http://42explore.com/hedghog.htm
The Topic:
Hedgehog
Easier - A hedgehog is a small animal covered with a thick coat of sharp spines. The hedgehog sleeps in small burrows or nest of grass and tangled leaves under shrubs, rocks, or hollow logs during the day and comes out at night to eat insects. Harder These mammals are nocturnal, sleeping during the day and eating at night. Desert and temperate hedgehogs can have dormant periods of hibernation when their body temperature drops to near the same temperature as their surroundings. They sometimes hibernate when there is no food. Northern African hedgehogs hibernate from October to late April. Tropical hedgehogs do not hibernate in their normal environment, but will if there is a lack of food. Occasionally a hedgehog will produce foamy saliva when stimulated by strong smells or tastes and smear it all over their body. This act, called self-anointing, is little understood. Some species can swim and climb, but mostly they stay on the ground. If threatened, the hedgehog freezes and rolls into a ball with its spines sticking out for defense. When erected, the spines stick out at different angles to create an impassable barrier. Strong muscles curl the skin tightly over their body. European species appear to be immune to toxins, since they are able to eat bees and wasps. They can eat some venomous snakes, but cannot withstand a direct bite from them. They are vulnerable in India and China due to loss of habitat.

78. Hedge Hogs-animal Care, Caging, Habitats And Feeding
As pets go, hedgehogs are generally not cuddly lapfungus type pets, is an Egyptian hedgehog (_Hemiechinus auritus_). The care instructions in this FAQ
http://www.animalsexotique.com/hedge_hog.html

HEDGEHOGS
Hedgehogs are small insectivores looking much like an upsidedown oval bowl, that is covered with sharp quills, with an adorable little face and ears peeking out from one end. Neither legs nor tail are very visible during normal movement. Hedgehogs roll into a ball of projecting spines when threatened, leaving themselves all but invulnerable to any natural predator.
Hedgehogs do have soft fur on their faces and bellies, and so are not entirely prickly. Some hedgehogs have what appears to be a narrow reverse Mohawk hairdo (a narrow furrow that runs lengthwise).
It isn't a scar, they haven't lost quills. It is natural and helps the quills point forward without getting crossed when they bristle.
Katherine Long
Running in size from about 6 to 8 inches in length, mature African Pigmy hedgehogs look for all the world to be little armoured tanks being lead around by one of the busiest noses in the animal kingdom.
Hedgehogs tend to be quite nervous in their temperament, and will generally duck their head down, accompanied by rapid snuffling or snorting. This presents a very prickly forehead to any possible enemies. The more used to you (and awake) a hedgehog is, the less of this ducking and snuffling will occur.
The following is largely verbatim from Nathan Tenny and gives a good detailed description of pet hedgehogs:
Grzimek's Animal Encyclopedia says that they weigh about 200-220 grams (about seven ounces); this is for wild animals. Captives seem to be much larger; the smallest of our three hedgehogs is 250 g and growing, and our large male weighs about 400-450 g when he isn't overweight. (However, all our animals have come from exceptionally large bloodlines.) Adults are about six to eight inches long, depending on how far they're stretching when you measure.
