CARE OF THE PET HEDGEHOG Dawn Wrobel Ain't No Creek Ranch 2553 W. Offner Road Beecher, IL 60401-3347 INTRODUCTION The African hedgehog has become increasingly popular as a pet during this decade. Unfortunately, their popularity has increased ahead of our knowledge of their proper needs in a captive environment. As you begin to see these pets in your practice, keep in mind that many of their problems may be related to diet and environment. To understand how captivity affects hedgehogs, it is helpful to know a little about their natural environment. Atelerix albiventris is a member of the order Insectivora, and is known alternately as the African hedgehog, African pygmy hedgehog, four-toed hedgehog and white bellied hedgehog. It is found throughout Central Africa and is not currently an endangered animal. The hedgehogs seen in captivity are almost entirely domestically bred. There are other genus of hedgehogs found in Europe and Asia, but they are not readily imported and thus are not seen in the US pet trade. African hedgehogs are small, primitive mammals varying in weight from 250 to 600 grams. Although their bellies are covered with soft, usually white, fur, their entire dorsal surface is covered with short spines. These are not barbed as in the unrelated porcupine. Typically, the spines or quills are white or ivory with a center band of dark brown, dark gray or black. One of the unique features of the animal is it's ability to roll up tightly into a ball, entirely covering its face and feet. In this position, few predators, and few veterinarians, are able to successfully unroll the animal. The spines feel quite sharp when crisscrossed and upright in this defensive posture. When the animal relaxes, the quills lie flat on the body and feel like bristles rather than needles.

Hedgehog
General Care of Hedgehogs
Susan Horton, DVM Hedgehog Care Sheet Most of the hedgehogs that are kept in the United States as pets are from Africa. Their origin is the African Savanna, though none are brought in from the wild anymore. Most African pygmy hedgehogs, (Atelerix spp.) available are bred locally. These cute little creatures are fun and fascinating. The following paragraphs have some quick helpful hints on basic care. Housing Diet Hedgehogs are insectivores, and as a result are essentially carnivorous like cats, as opposed to guinea pigs, rabbits, and most small rodents, which are generally vegetarian. High quality cat or kitten food such as Hill's Science Diet or Iams, hedgehog maintenance diet (multiple sources) or ferret food (Marshall Farms is recommended. Both dry and canned food should be provided. They also eat earthworms, pinkie mice, and mealworms. Small amounts of beta-carotene rich veggies should also be provided. Handling your Hedgehog Behavior If a hedgehog smells something interesting, it will often begin to contort itself, start foaming at the mouth and lick the foam onto its spines. This behavior is referred to as self-anointing. The snuffling or snorting while having the head tucked down is a defense mechanism. It leaves them with their quills protecting every bit of visible surface, but still allows the hedgehog to move. This behavior is usually accompanied by sudden lurches in the direction the hedgehog believes its potential enemy is in, to try and give it a good warning prickle. The more your hedgehog comes to know you, the less defensive it will become.

Writing an article on the care of pet hedgehogs in the United States poses an interesting challenge. Any animal kept in captivity will have varying standards of care, depending on the standards that its keeper holds themselves to, and what information is available to them. It will also vary depending on whether the animal is being kept as a wild animal, and effort being put into replicating its natural environment. Or as a pet, and the effort being put into giving it an environment which meets its basic needs, but is more suited to life as part of a household. As the vast majority of African White Bellied hedgehogs in the United States are kept as household pets or breeders, this article will focus on standards for providing a healthy and enriching pet type home for a hedgehog. In the following paragraphs we will share the information we give to the people who buy our hedgehogs, as well as a brief commentary on how we see these needs being met by United States pet owners.
When looking at the best care for any captive animal, the first thing that should be considered is what its life would be like in its natural habitat. Foragers and hunters by nature, wild hedgehogs put an enormous amount of thought and energy into finding food each day, and this predisposition to high activity needs to be respected when planning their captive environment. Another major consideration should be the basic needs of ALL living creatures. These six basic needs are:

Feature The Intensive Pet Care Unit The Animal Medical Center uses some of the most advanced medical technology known to man to treat dogs, cats, turtles, even rats. Crazy, you say? Not if the pet was a member of your family.
By Steve Fishman D r. Thomas Donnelly, a leader in his field, pokes his head into the waiting room and searches for Miss Cintron. Around the Animal Medical Center, she is sometimes affectionately called the Rat Lady, a distinction she hardly thinks she deserves. After all, she has only Junior, her black rat, and Tony, a brown one, plus two champagne-colored rats. One person she knows through her rat club has close to 100. Miss Cintron arrived a bit early this morning, as she often does. She doesn't mind a little wait for Dr. Donnelly, who's taken care of her rats for years. She takes a chair in the easy-to-clean room with the cats and dogs of every variety, long-haired breeds ill-suited to the local climate a panting Alaskan husky is there one day as well as mutts. Dog and cat owners chat amiably, sharing secrets. "I give her sushi," one woman confides. Occasionally, Mrs. Vincent Astor, who's lent her name and energies to the hospital's constant fund-raising, accompanies, in her gloves and hat, Boysy and Girlsy, her quick-footed dachshunds. Dr. Donnelly's other clients hedgehogs, guinea pigs, chinchillas, rabbits arrive in small cages. Bernie Goetz, who once shot four kids on the subway, brings in wounded squirrels and pays to have them treated. Toucans stake out a shoulder, and sometimes a couple of mallards stand, each on its own chair, honking at what must seem an unruly flock.
