Hedgehogs
We've been raising hedgehogs since 1993. The short version of a very long story is that it was simply love at first sight. From our first hedgehog, Sonic, our herd quickly grew to about 165 within a year. After we had completed our initial research into hedgehog colours, (you'll find more info on this here) we scaled back to our current herd size of 35. We are small-scale breeders with occasional pet, show and breeding stock available in a variety of colours. Please ask about availability. If you are looking for more information on hedgehogs, we have copies of THE PYGMY HEDGEHOG A PERFECT PET co-written by Bryan and Sharon Massena:
THE PYGMY HEDGEHOG A PERFECT PET

ISBN # 0-9655629-1-3
By far the most complete book about the Pygmy Hedgehog that's ever been written. This book contains information on purchasing and caring for pet hedgehogs, breeding, colour charts with full-colour photographs, the show standard, and much more. Written by Sharon Massena and Bryan Smith, renowned hedgehog experts, pioneer breeders and founders of the show system.

FELLOW HEDGEHOG LOVERS!!
HEDGEHOG
I want to be respected
For what I am:
A cuddly little animal,
Burdened with swords.
INTRODUCTION:
My name is Laura Ledet and I have had hedgehogs since 1993. I am relatively new to webpage building so it's been a true labor of love and total frustration putting together all these pages. At first I began very enthusiastically: but once I really got into it, and ran into more obstacles then I can even remember, I looked much more like this: In any case, I do hope you enjoy cruising my site, and that you find all the answers you seek regarding the care of these wonderful little animals: The African Pygmy Hedgehog
First off, we need to discuss the legalities of owning a hedgehog. To date (Jan 2002) hedgehogs are illegal in the following states/cities:
New York City
California
Arizona
Hawaii Georgia Vermont Denver, Colorado Pennsylvania Owning or breeding hedgehogs in these places can bring you a hefty fine and they can and will confiscate your animals, and will probably euthanise them, if you are turned in. Laws are always changing, so please check and make sure these animals are legal to have where you live prior to buying one.
CHOOSING YOUR PET:
When picking out your hedgehog, there are a number of things to consider. First and foremost is: From whom are you buying this hedgehog? Many hedgehogs are sold in pet stores, many others from private breeders. In either case, many of these are reputable, while others are not. Can they supply you with health and other information on the parents of this hedgehog? Better still, the grandparents of the hedgehog? This is important information to have, as it can possibly tell you whether or not this hedgehog has a genetic tie to a particular disease, or if it has been inbred or not. Inbreeding can be the cause of a lot of health issues with any animal. If the person you are dealing with cannot or will not give this information, then they should not be selling hedgehogs and your taking a risk doing business with them.

27. Care And Feeding Of Hedgehogs
hedgehogs are exceptional animals that are easy to care for and friendly if properly When attempting to handle your pet, approach it slowly and quietly.
http://drexotic.com/care_hedgehogs.htm
Care and Feeding of Hedgehogs By Christine Hancock Hedgehogs are exceptional animals that are easy to care for and friendly if properly socialized. Their natural habitat is the forest, grassland, and scrub. In the wild, hedgehogs spend most of their time searching for food. In captivity, they prove to be curious animals who spend an abundance of time exploring their environment. Housing
A large glass or plastic aquarium, or a homemade cage works well to house your little friend. Be sure the walls and flooring of the cage are smooth to prevent the animal from climbing out. Wire cages should be avoided at all costs. Wiring allows their little feet to slip through, causing injury to the hedgehog. Ample floor space is a plus. This allows for a large amount of play room and helps prevent obesity in your little friend. The best place to keep the cage is in a warm room. A good range of temperature for a hedgehog is 72-85 degrees Fahrenheit. Cleaning the enclosure on a weekly basis helps control unwanted odors, making it a good pet to house indoors. Accessories
The bedding should be nontoxic, absorbent, and relatively dust free so their noses won’t get irritated. Avoid cedar wood shavings as they have been the cause of respiratory infections in hedgehogs. Shredded newspaper works well and is most cost efficient. Our hospital, however, recommends a product called Carefresh, a newspaper-based bedding that is soft, absorbent, and easy to clean. These animals need a shelter, or a hide box in their cage. By offering a critter log, plastic pot on its side, a kleenex or shoe box, or another form of shelter, you are offering your pet a place of security and a place to sleep.

Having a hedgehog as a pet
Hedgehog pet care! The habits of hedgehogs, their habitat and eating patterns. How to house and look after them and rear them from babies.
Many of us never really give much thought to hedgehogs. Often the only time we see them is on the side of the road, the victim of a car. Sometimes they'll be found in the garden during the spring cleanup in their nests hibernating. Tragically though, more often they'll be found in the garden by the next major killer of hedgehogs - the weed trimmer. When this happens we often find ourselves as the surrogate parent. At this point in time we realise that our fondness for the small animals exceeds our knowledge of them. So let's look at a few basic facts, habits and traits of the hedgehog. Hedgehogs belong to the family Erinaceidae and are distant relatives of shrews, moles, tenrecs and moonrats. There are 14 species of spiny hedgehogs split in four genus; Atelerix (found in Central/Southern Africa), Paraechinus (Northern Africa), Hemiechinus (Middle East) and Erinaceus (Europe, UK and New Zealand). In the USA the species Atelerix albiventris has been imported purely for being kept as pets, but not released into the wild. In the wild hedgehogs live for three or four years, though in good climatic conditions they may reach seven years. Hedgehogs are nocturnal insectivores that hibernate in colder climates. Hedgehog diet Their diet consists mainly of earthworms, snails, beetles and caterpillars but they also eat a large range of other insects. Individual hedgehogs have slightly differing diets depending on their environment; some will eat more snails to beetles or more earthworms, in fact some hedgehogs have been seen to jump in the air to catch moths! Though primarily having an invertebrate diet hedgehogs have been known to eat carrion, small birds or small mammals. If they come across eggs that are cracked or have been ejected from the nest they will eat these also. In a captive environment they will happily eat dog biscuits and the occasional piece of sweet soft fruit.

Print this page for your records. The most common species of pet hedgehog is the small African Pigmy Hedgehog In actual fact, this animal is the product of not one, but two different species of hedgehog - the White-Bellied (Atelerix albiventris) and the Algerian hedgehog. (Atelerix algirus). They weigh 200-600 grams (.5-1.3 pounds) and can live 7-10 years with proper care. Hedgehogs are nocturnal and eat and get most of their exercise at night. All hedgehogs in the pet trade have been domestically raised for many generations.
Hedgehog quills are actually modified hairs that can be raised by muscles under the skin. When a hedgehog encounters a new or unusual scent they lick at it and foam at the mouth. It then spreads the saliva on its back and flanks with its long tongue. This process is called self-anointing.
Housing: Hedgehogs are usually kept in aquariums or solid bottom cages at least 18" x 24" , with pelleted bedding or newspaper. Towels are not recommended as threads can get wrapped around the spines or feet or cause digestive obstruction if ingested. Cedar chips can cause respiratory problems. Bedding should be changed daily. Foot & skin problems result from soiled bedding. Hedgehogs are secretive nocturnal animals, and many will not eat if they do not have a secure area to sleep. Flowerpots, small wooden or cardboard boxes or halved PVC pipe work well.

More Pet Resources More Dog Care Tips More Cat Care Tips Flea Activity Dog Walking Calculator ... Talk with Pet Owners You know it's good for you. You know that exercise can give you energy, help you maintain a healthy weight, keep your muscles and joints flexible, help you live longer, and above all, make you feel better. For all the same reasons, your pets need to get up and get moving. Not only can exercise extend your furry friends' lives; it may also expend some of their nervous energy and make them a little less likely to chew on the living room drapes. The thing is, nobody's filled pets in on all of these benefits of exercise. Without someone to lead the way, they're not going to run laps or do leg lifts in their spare time. So as a wonderful pet parent, part of your job is ensuring your animal family members get safe, enjoyable exercise on a regular basiswhether they're cats, dogs, turtles, or ferrets! All pets need some physical activity to live a happy, healthy life.

Rosie HOME
Hello! My name is Rose Akwekon (Rosie is my nickname) and I have been living at The Flash and Thelma Memorial Hedgehog Rescue for the second longest time (after Louise) when I moved here on February 25, 1998. I was born in November of 1995 so I just turned 4 years old. I've had a pretty hard life before coming here, since I was blinded in one eye and for a while I was a middle school "mascot" where some human boys used to bat me around the classroom like a golf ball during recess when the teacher was gone. She finally found out when they were doing and caught them. Then she brought me to my present home, where I lead a pretty relaxed and happy life. Let me tell you something about our home. The Flash and Thelma Memorial Hedgehog Rescue was originally called The Flash Memorial Hedgehog Rescue named after the original resident, Flash, whom I never got to know because she died just shortly before I arrived here. When I came here I was terrified because of all of the beatings I used to get at that middle school, so I stayed rolled up in a ball most of the time.
When I got here there were two hedgehogs already here, old Thelma (even older than me - she was born in 1993) and little Louise, a very wild but happy hedgehog. Thelma became my friend and snuggled with me all of the time and before long, I started to calm down. Then Little Flash came here and she was sweet to me also, and she and Thelma became best friends. After a while I came to know that even the humans here were not going to hurt me so I became more relaxed. My dear friend Thelma died from being very old on July 12, 1998, but I did not know why she went away so I went looking for her every day for a few months. The rescue was renamed The Flash and Thelma Memorial Hedgehog Rescue on July 12, 1998 because Thelma was so special as a caring and kind hedgehog. The rescue was formally organized in the next month, becoming a charitable nonprofit subsidiary of W.O.L.F. (Wolves Offered Life

"Even though I live alone, I never feel lonely. Barney is my best friend. He never lets me down.” Nothing tells you more about the joys of pet ownership than the words of the owners themselves. Veterinarians, physicians, and online references substantiate the comments above. They agree that people who have pets:
  • are usually healthy, happy, and independent have lower blood pressure and pulse rate pay 21% fewer visits to the doctor suffer less from depression and stress make friends easily are more active enjoy affection and unconditional love handle the loss of a loved one more easily do not feel lonely take better care of themselves feel more secure.
