Title: StressTyp Creator: Harry van der Hulst and Rob Goedemans Subject: stress; primary stress; secondary stress; accent; main stress; rhythm; lexical stress; syllable weight; stress domain; metrical rules; stress parameters; foot type; foot assignment. Description: StressTyp stands for Stress Typology. StressTyp is a database containing information about word-level stress patterns of (some of) the languages of the world. Work on StressTyp began in 1992 as a pilot project of EUROTYP (1990-1994), a project on the typology of European languages, financed by the European Science Foundation (ESF). In october 1997, work on the Prosody in Indonesian Languages (PIL) project started. StressTyp was integrated in this project to ensure its continuation, and to provide an output platform for the information on the prosodies of Indonesian languages that will be gathered by the project's researchers. The first goal of StressTyp was to offer a quick entry to the primary and secondary literature on stress systems of the languages of the world. All stress properties of languages were encoded to facilitate searches for grammars of languages with certain stress properties. This coding system has started to lead a life of its own and has made it possible to search through the database for the occurrence of (combinations of) quite specific stress parameters. Through the search facilities that come with any database, StressTyp can now be instrumental in testing and developing typological hypotheses on stress, which has become its primary function. It has been expanded with geographical information to allow searches for areal patterning.

88. Jonah - Latin English Study Bible
One answer is that the Latin lanuage, in Biblical times, was written with no {19} And he said to them, “I am hebrew, and I fear the Lord God of heaven,

The Sacred Bible The Prophecy of Jonah Ionas 1
Jonah 1

~ Or, ‘And the word of the Lord happened to Jonah the son of Amittai....’
~ Why is the word ‘and’ found so frequently in the Bible? One answer is that the Latin lanuage, in Biblical times, was written with no punctuation, no spaces between the words, and no difference between capital and small letters. So the word ‘and’ (in Latin ‘et’) as well as other words (e.g. ‘for,’ ‘which,’ etc.) had much the same function as punctuation. Repeated use of the word ‘and’ allowed the reader to more easily locate the individual words.
~ This last phrase is difficult to translate literally: ‘dormiebat’ means to sleep, but ‘sopore’ is an adverb meaning sleepy. The two words together emphasize that it was a deep sleep. But adding ‘gravi’ makes qualifies this deep sleep even further, in that it was painful or grave or heavy.
~ The men of this ship are repeatedly referred to as ‘viri,’ not merely as ‘homines.’ The word ‘vir’ is rather like the English word ‘gentleman’ in that it implies something about the man other than that he is an adult male. The root of the word ‘viri’ is a word meaning virtue or strength. The men of this ship were not bad men, yet they threw Jonah overboard, in accordance with God’s will.
~ Also, though the Douay-Rheims translates this as ‘rowed hard,’ the word ‘hard’ is not justified by the Latin text. However, the very fact that they were rowing shows the extraordinary effort that they went to, since this was certainly a sailing vessel, with oars only for exceptional circumstances.

A New Language
Nazanin In the past few months I've been thinking of learning a new language , but it's so difficult to choose one! It's not only for fun, I want the new language to be the most useful one in my future professional career. What do you think? Shall I go for French? Spanish? Russian? German? Chinese? or Japanese? If you consider Europe alone, there is no "most important" language. I guess French, German and Spanish have the same weight, even Spanish might come second to French and German. Bringing Iran and generally the Eurasian region into account, then Russian becomes very important because it's widely spoken not only in Eastern Europe (new EU members) but also in Caucasus and central asia too. Finally we have China which is huge and growing very fast, and Japan which is a modern society and the centre of socio-economic power of east Asia. Someone argued that Spanish has the advantage of being the most widely spoken language in South America, but common how much of my life will be tied to that continent honestly? I can't buy that argument. On the other hand, I am not sure if I will be able to learn the Chinese hieroglyph ever in my life, which is a negative point. What do you think? Do you know a second language (apart from English) from which you have benefited? Let's brainstorm.

GAELIC IN THE EU.
There's a fascinating discussion going on at Crooked Timber about the proposal that Irish should be an official language of the EU. Maria 's attitude in her post "What’s the Irish for boondoggle?" is clear from the title alone, and the opening paragraph nails it down further: It’s not every day that Fine Gael, the Progressive Democrats and Sinn Fein agree on something. But they all say Irish should be an official language of the EU, and complain that the government (which the PDs are part of) hasn’t done enough to make this happen during the Irish presidency. Our presidency of the EU is at best a partial success because we haven’t managed to force the EU to spend an extra 50 million euro a year to translate speeches and documents into a language that no one actually needs them in. It’s the principle, you see. I agree with her, despite my fondness for an Gaeilge , but a number of her commenters don't, and the debate spills over onto Maltese as well while staying remarkably civil. Biblical Hebrew language : biblical-hebrew-language.ask.dyndns.dk
Biblical Hebrew or Classical Hebrew is the ancient form of the Hebrew languages as spoken by the Israelites, in which the Hebrew Bible Torah and Tanakh ) was originally written. Its widest usage is by the Jews and the various Jewish dialects of Hebrew. A smaller group, the Samaritans , also used the Samaritan Hebrew language . From a linguistic point of view, the Classical Hebrew language is usually divided into two periods: Biblical Hebrew, and Roman Era Hebrew, having very distinct grammatical patterns. Biblical Hebrew is further divided into the so called Golden Age Hebrew (1200 BCE to 500 BCE) and Silver Age Hebrew (500 BCE to 60 BCE ). Silver Age Hebrew has many borrowings from Aramaic , for example the use of the conditional particle illu shibboleth between the two, is the use of the relative pronoun Restrictive clause that ) in the earlier period, being replaced with the prefix Greek and Parsi , mainly through the dialect of Aramaic which was the Lingua franca of the area at the time.
