Cause, Dangers Of Heat Waves
POSTED: 3:25 pm EDT July 26, 2005 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Summer always brings days of hot weather and some of them may set new record high temperatures. But heat waves are episodes of extreme heat lasts a week or longer and can extend over a large section of the U.S. Jacksonville's senior meteorologist not only prepares his daily forecasts and monthly garden tips , but also puts some broader thoughts together for a regular column here on News4Jax.com.
The factors that cause such conditions to occur are:
  • Long Hours of Sunshine There are more hours of daytime solar heating than hours of nocturnal cooling. This causes the temperature of the air to increase daily unless cloud systems and cooling rains are generated. Reduction of Atmospheric Moisture The expansion of heated air causes a large high pressure aloft. High pressure areas produce sinking air, called subsidence. This not only brings drier air down from aloft, but the air is heated by compression by the more dense pressure of the lower atmosphere. This heated air creates a “lid” of warm air called an inversion that restricts the movement of rising air currents that would produce clouds and showers. This large dome of high pressure also blocks out cloud systems and rain-producing fronts. Dry landscape With less moisture in the soil and landscape, there is an absence of evaporative cooling in the lower atmosphere. The accumulation of smoke and dust reduces the ability of water vapor to condense into clouds or rain showers.

July 2005 Heat Wave Fresh on the heels of the fifth warmest June on record in the Twin Cities, July 2005 is also turning out to be quite warm. A streak of 9 days in a row of 90 degrees or warmer placed the summer of 2005 in the record books tied for 3rd place along with 4 other years. The last time the Twin Cities saw a stretch of 9 days in a row of 90 degrees or higher was back in 1988. The longest stretch of 90 plus degrees was July 5-18 1936 with 14 days in a row. This included a record stretch of five days in a row where the thermometer saw 100 or above. This was a deadly heat wave. Looking back at the Minneapolis Weather Bureau log books there were 84 deaths in Minneapolis and 92 in St Paul from July 12-16 1936 due to the heat. So far as of July 19th there has not been a 100 degree temperature yet this year in Minnesota. Other places in Minnesota have been warm as well. E. Linacre Death rates at midlatitudes tend to be highest in winter, when people are confined indoors and therefore are more exposed to infectious diseases. Human and animal mortality is high also during heat waves There are various definitions of heat waves, but a common one is a series of days with maxima over 35 C. Heat waves can cause great discomfort to people, and in the extreme they can cause heat stroke , which involves brain dysfunction (e.g. a stroke or convulsions), hot and dry skin, and a body-core temperature above 40 C (1). Heat stress should be measured in terms of its effect of the human energy balance, e.g. the apparent temperature or heat index . Heat-related deaths are most common amongst the elderly and sick people, and they tend to occur one day after great heat, perhaps because of the time taken to modify the blood’s composition in a way that precipitates heart or brain thrombosis. In Australia and the USA, heat waves kill more people than any other weather-related disaster (1, 3). Moreover, it is estimated that for every death specifically attributed to high temperatures, there are ten more due to the heat aggravating a pre-existing illness. Heat deaths and measured summer temperatures are strongly correlated in many parts of the USA but not in the southeastern states (the 'South') (4). One could hypothesise that many heat-related deaths in the South, where high dewpoints and maxima over 30

    Strategies to Address Heat Waves
    Heat Wave Response Programs

Local governments can play an important role in predicting and responding to excessive heat events, or heat waves. Two increasingly common strategies are heat alert systems and heat island reduction measures.
What are Heat Health Watch-Warning Systems?
Heat Health Watch-Warning Systems predict when heat waves are likely to affect public health, and alert public officials to this threat. These systems use computer programs that analyze National Weather Service forecasts and other local data to forecast dangerous conditions. Working with the University of Delaware's Synoptic Climatology Lab , approximately 20 cities in the U.S. have established Heat Health Watch-Warning Systems. Participating cities include Philadelphia, Seattle, Chicago, and St. Louis, as well as numerous municipalities throughout Europe.
Can Heat Island Reduction Strategies Lower the Risk of Excessive Heat Events?

The 2003 European heat waves volume issue publication date July / August 2005 Tom Kosatsky
and Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health, McGill University, Canada
Contributors employed a variety of methods to estimate the number of excess deaths during and just after the 2003 heat episodes and to relate daily death counts to weather, to concentrations of air pollutants, and to demographic and social characteristics. Indeed, the varying emphases and methods demonstrated by the six national contributors provide complementary evidence of what happened in 2003, and to whom. While the absence of uniform methods does limit between-country comparisons of the health impact of the 2003 heat waves, these reports taken together suggest that weather alone does not explain the varying tolls of excess death within and between countries. Investigators in Rome and Turin calculated rates of excess death as a function of socioeconomic level. They report that the greatest excess was in people living in areas of the lowest socioeconomic level, and suggest that finding may be upwardly biased, due in part to the phenomenon that those who have the means to do so leave Italian cities in summer, leading to an overestimate of the denominator for economically advantaged elderly people resident in the city in summer [7].

Heat wave to give way to cooler temps
    Milder conditions expected through weekend
    By Elissa Dickey
    American News Writer
Talk about beating a dead horse. The weather in the Aberdeen area has been like a broken record with the persistent heat waves that keep coming back.
A number of cliches come to mind. Perhaps the most accurate adage: Any way you slice it, it's been hot. A heat advisory was in effect Tuesday for most of central and northeastern South Dakota. In Aberdeen, Tuesday's high was 93 degrees, and as of 7 p.m., the heat index high was 103, said Jessica Elsen of Aberdeen's National Weather Service office. That means it felt 10 degrees hotter in the Hub City than it actually ever was Tuesday. But for those of you sick of the summer sizzle, there is hope.

The Sun in 2004 was photographed by the Big Bear Solar Observatory in Big Bear Lake, California, operated by the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
The observatory sits out in the middle of the lake to reduce distortion from Sun heating the air above the ground. Turbulence is reduced by a smooth flow of wind across the lake. The usually cloudless skies over the lake and the clear air at 6,750 feet elevation make the observatory a great site for solar observations.
The observatory was built by California Institute of Technology in 1969. NJIT took over management in 1997. It is funded by NASA, the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Air Force and Navy, and other agencies.

    • Heat wave: Prolonged period of excessive heat and humidity. The National Weather Service steps up its procedures to alert the public during these periods of excessive heat and humidity. Heat index: A number in degrees Fahrenheit (F) that tells how hot it really feels when relative humidity is added to the actual air temperature. Exposure to full sunshine can increase the heat index by 15 degrees F. Heat cramps: Heat cramps are muscular pains and spasms due to heavy exertion. Although heat cramps are the least severe, they are an early signal that the body is having trouble with the heat.
