Know What These Terms Mean...
  • Heat wave: Prolonged period of excessive heat and humidity. The National Weather Service steps up its procedures to alert the public during these periods of excessive heat and humidity. Heat index: A number in degrees Fahrenheit (F) that tells how hot it really feels when relative humidity is added to the actual air temperature. Exposure to full sunshine can increase the heat index by 15 degrees F. Heat cramps: Heat cramps are muscular pains and spasms due to heavy exertion. Although heat cramps are the least severe, they are an early signal that the body is having trouble with the heat. Heat exhaustion: Heat exhaustion typically occurs when people exercise heavily or work in a hot, humid place where body fluids are lost through heavy sweating. Blood flow to the skin increases, causing blood flow to decrease to the vital organs. This results in a form of mild shock. If not treated, the victim may suffer heat stroke.

Heat waves are set to intensify with increasing greenhouse emissions Heat waves in the 21st Century will be more intense, more frequent and longer lasting, US experts report in the journal Science.
Scientists from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) used climate modelling to predict geographic patterns of future heat waves. Future heat waves in some areas of Europe and North America will become more common and extreme in the second half of the 21st Century. The research shows greenhouse emissions are likely to exacerbate the problem. It's the extreme weather and climate events that will have some of the most severe impacts on human society as the climate changes
Jerry Meehl, NCAR This is suggested by data that shows present-day heat waves coincide with an atmospheric circulation pattern that is intensified by ongoing increases in greenhouse gases. As the pattern becomes more pronounced, severe heat waves will hit the Mediterranean and southern and western US.

WWF NI said data collected at Aldergrove over 35 years was similar to rises in average temperature in Dublin of 0.7 degrees centigrade. Spokesman Malachy Campbell said the province was likely to see hotter and wetter weather in the future. "Not only do we face the possibility of heat waves but also floods and sea level rise due to arctic ice melting." The survey, which analysed climate change across 16 European capitals, suggested London's temperature rise of two degrees was one of the most significant in the continent. Greenhouse gases The charity said a build-up of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide, were partly to blame. It said the summer of 2003 was believed to be the hottest in Europe in 500 years. The charity said its survey, Europe Feels the Heat, suggested that although temperature changes in Northern Ireland were not as high as Luxembourg, Madrid, Athens or London, they were still rising.

Introduction Humidity Heat Disorders Safety Tips ... Back to the homepage Introduction According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , an average of 384 people die from heat every year. This is more than the deaths caused by floods (135), lightning (85), tornadoes (73), and hurricanes (25) combined. Heat can be especially deadly in large urban areas that can become heat islands. Brick buildings, asphalt streets, and tar roofs store heat and radiate is like a slow burning furnace. Temperatures can be several degrees hotter in the city than in nearby suburbs and rural areas. In these situations, the elderly, infants, and young children, and people with chronic health problems are most at risk. Of the 525 heat related deaths in Chicago in the July 1995 heat wave, 73 percent were elderly. More on the July 1995 Chicago heat wave The body cools itself by sweating because the evaporation of moisture has a cooling effect. High humidity reduces this evaporation and hinders the body's effort to cool itself. The dew point temperature is a much more useful measure of the moisture content of the atmosphere than the commonly used relative humidity. During summer in Illinois, dew point temperatures in the 50s are generally comfortable. Most people begin to feel the humidity when dew point temperatures are in the 60s. Dew point temperatures in the 70s are rare and cause significant discomfort. During the peak of the July 1995 heat wave, dew point temperatures were in the upper 70s and lower 80s, unprecedented for the Chicago area.

Heat Wave Awareness Project: Home Page H eat waves do not evoke the same sense of widespread urgency or fright as hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, and earthquakes. Although they are far less property-destructive than other extreme weather events, more lives have been claimed over the past fifteen years by heat than by all other extreme weather events combined. Heat waves are natural, technological, and social hazards, which makes preparation for and response to these climate events complex. It often takes multiple days of oppressive heat for a heat wave to exact its toll upon society. Heat waves do not strike victims, but rather they sneak up on and slowly suffocate life out of vulnerable populations. Because heat waves are slow and silent, media coverage of and public education on heat waves are scarce. However, heat waves have widespread impacts. This web page has been designed to provide information on heat wave mitigation, preparation, vulnerability, and resources to help fill the current void in heat wave awareness. Power plants worried as heat wave warms Great Lakes
Last Updated Wed, 20 Jul 2005 18:34:34 EDT CBC News Ontario's electricity supply may be in jeopardy because a weeks-long heat wave has warmed waters in the Great Lakes and lowered the levels of northern rivers, a provincial power utility is warning. Although temperatures and humidity haven't been as extreme during the past two days, the warmer waters may force some coal and nuclear generating stations to cut their power production, according to Ontario Power Generation. The water at Toronto's Cherry Beach, which is on Lake Ontario, is about four degrees warmer than it was last summer, for example. The utility said that similar increases in other parts of the Great Lakes are causing problems for coal and nuclear plants at Nanticoke, Lambton and Pickering. They all use water from the Great Lakes system to cool their generators.

The hidden, human cost of heat waves
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) Every year, natural disasters wreak havoc in the United States, producing dramatic scenes and billions of dollars in damages. But while major storms and earthquakes may garner more headlines and incur heavier financial losses, a less obvious weather phenomenon heat waves produce among the highest human costs of all such disasters. Statistics gathered by the World Health Organization show that heat waves account for the two top deadliest weather-related disasters in the United States over the last decade and three of the top five. While the financial damage from a heat wave may not be as high or as evident as that caused by a hurricane or earthquake, high temperatures do come at a cost. For instance, the WHO said government agencies spent $3.7 billion on a heat wave that struck pockets of the country in summer 1998. Top 10 deadliest weather-related phenomena in U.S. from 1990-2000

The Earth Policy Institute (EPI), based in Washington DC, warns that such deaths are likely to increase, as "even more extreme weather events lie ahead". The EPI calculated the huge death toll from the eight western European countries with data available. "Since reports are not yet available for all European countries, the total heat death toll for the continent is likely to be substantially larger," it says in a statement. France suffered the worst losses, with 14,802 people dying from causes attributable to the blistering heat. This is "more than 19 times the death toll from the SARS epidemic worldwide", notes the EPI.
