Cardiomyopathy in the Ferret (Dr. Williams)
Dr. Bruce Williams, DVM, writes: In short, CMP is a congenital problem in some lines of ferrets that manifests as ferrets get older. CMP means that the muscle of the heart becomes progressively weaker, and the heart is no longer strong enough to pump all of the blood. As the muscle weakens, it stretches, and the heart gradually enlarges, sort of like a balloon. As the blood begins to back up, it will accumulate both within the lung and around the lung (often also in the abdominal cavity), resulting in coughing, which is the most commonly noticed sign. Actually, most animals have decreases in activity first, as they tire easily. CMP can be treated with some drugs, including diuretics which help it manage the load, but the damage is progressive and cannot be reversed. Concerning CMP - the vast majority of cases are probably due to genetics. CMP is seen in Boxers, Great Danes, and Dobermans - each of these breeds has their own specific type. CMP also runs in family lines in humans. While viruses have been incriminated in humans, I have not seen lesions resembling pre-existent viral infections in the ferrets with CMP that I have seen.

T hanks for calling at my web site, my name is Bob. In 1997 at the age of 43 I had a heart attack. I didn't have much warning, just an angina pain in my arm. The problem was I didn’t know what angina felt like before then, so I wasn’t sure why I felt so ill.
I’m one of many people in England to suffer heart disease and like them I need to make life changes to try and slow down its effects. After my heart attack I had an angiogram, which led to angioplasty and stenting in an artery of my heart.
In September 2000, I had a quadruple heart by-pass operation which is healing well and I am now back at work as a Human Resource Adviser with a major Aerospace company. Normality to me, means doing what I did before my illness and being able to adequately provide for Angela and Ian, my wife and son. Through Community based cardiac rehabilitation, I believe I will be able to. If you have heart disease, or care for someone who has, or you have an interest in cardiac matters, then please read on. I went back to work on Monday 15th January 2001 - full time. Now I do overtime and have had a travel restriction lifted. I can drive , use public transport and fly. The Cardiologist says that I can now lead a normal life, just like everyone else. That is what CABG is all about - returning to a normal life. Many people though, find normality not very easy to accept after such trauma, this is where support groups come in - please follow the link.

Privacy Statement Heart Disease - Description What is CHD? Like any muscle, the heart needs a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients that are carried to it by the blood in the coronary arteries. When the coronary arteries become narrowed or clogged and cannot supply enough blood to the heart, the result is CHD. If not enough oxygen-carrying blood reaches the heart, the heart may respond with a pain called angina. The pain is usually felt in the chest or sometimes in the left arm and shoulder. (However, the same inadequate blood supply may cause no symptoms, a condition called silent angina.) WHen the blood supply is cut of completely, the result is a heart attack. The part of the heart that does not receive oxygen begines to die, and some of the heart muscle may be permanently damaged.

    http://congenitalheart.hs.columbia.edu/
Successful cardiac surgery in infants and children during the 1960s and 1970s has resulted in a rapidly growing population of adults with congenital heart disease. Some of these patients have cardiac problems which are not typically seen by adult cardiologists. The Joan And Michael Schneeweiss Center for Adult Congenital Heart Disease at New York Presbyterian Hospital was developed to serve the unique needs of this population. Highly specialized care is provided by a team of physicians specifically interested in the problems of adults with congenital heart disease. The Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program is directed by Dr. Marlon S. Rosenbaum, a cardiologist trained in both adult and pediatric heart disease. The Program is a vital resource for patients with both newly diagnosed congenital heart disease and those who had cardiac surgery earlier in life. Diagnostic studies such as echocardiography, cardiac MRI, and cardiac catheterization are performed by physicians knowledgeable about adult congenital heart disease. Our cardiac MRI facility has state of the art software which permits rapid acquisition of images and provides highly detailed anatomic information. Cardiopulmonary stress testing is performed by an exercise physiologist with extensive experience in exercise and congenital heart disease. The cardiac surgical program at the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Center is led by Dr. Jan Quaegebeur and Dr. Ralph Mosca. Our surgeons have had extensive experience in the repair of many different forms of congenital heart disease, including D-transposition of the great arteries, single ventricle, Ebstein's anomaly and aortic valve disease using the Ross procedure.

Launched in April 2005, the NHS Heart Improvement Programme is a national approach to support the delivery of the National Service Framework (NSF) for Coronary Heart Disease, through the development of cardiac networks. Our role is to:
    • Support cardiac network development
    • Ensure spread of service improvement within cardiac networks
    • Facilitate the introduction of new service improvement tools and recognised clinical innovations.
The programme builds on the successful work of its predecessor, the Coronary Heart Disease Collaborative, which was established to make improvements in the way CHD services are delivered to patients.

These pages will explain some basics about how the heart functions, what hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is, how it impairs the heart's ability to function, how a veterinarian diagnoses HCM, and the goal of prescribing medications to manage it.

Cigar, pipe smoking boost cancer, heart risks
Last Updated: 2003-11-21 10:33:06 -0400 (Reuters Health) NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The health risks of cigar or pipe smoking, from cancer to heart disease, are as great as those of relatively light cigarette smoking, according to a UK study. Researchers found that among more than 7,100 middle-aged men, those who smoked cigars or pipes faced higher risks of heart disease, stroke, lung cancer and other ills, compared with non-smokers. They were also 49 percent more likely to die over the two-decade study period. These risks were on par with those of men who smoked up to 19 cigarettes a day, according to findings published in the International Journal of Epidemiology. Tobacco use in its various forms has long been known to carry serious health risks. Yet there's been a popular perception that cigars, which enjoyed a surge in popularity starting in the 1990s, offer a "safer" way to smoke. Even medical research has been divided on the extent of the risk that cigars and pipes pose, according to the authors of the new study. They note that some studies have suggested the habit is less hazardous than cigarette smoking, while others indicate that cigars, in particular, may cause as much smoking-related disease as cigarettes do.
