How to prevent heart disease
What is heart disease and why should I be concerned? Heart disease is a name given to a variety of conditions that affect the performance of the heart. Important examples of heart disease include:
  • angina, in which there is poor blood circulation to the heart, heart attack, in which there is death of part of the heart muscle, and arrhythmia, in which the rate or rhythm of the heart beat is abnormal.
In the UK, heart disease kills more people, both men and women, than any other disease. One British adult dies of heart disease every three minutes. Your heart is the engine that drives your body. It is a powerful muscle that pumps blood to your entire body, providing the oxygen and nutrients that you need to live. The average human heart works at a rate of 100,000 beats a day or an incredible 2,500 million beats over a lifetime of 70 years.

What is heart disease? There are many types of heart disease. About 25% of all Americans have one or more types of cardiovascular disease. The major types of heart disease are atherosclerosis coronary, rheumatic congenital, ... angina and arrhythmia . Heart disease can arise from congenital defects, infection, narrowing of the coronary arteries, high blood pressure , or disturbances. The first stages of heart disease are lesions and cracks forming in the blood vessel walls normally at the points of highest pressure or stress (near the heart). The second stage is the body trying to repair itself by depositing fatty substances ( cholesterol , lipoproteins) inside the blood vessels to fill the cracks. Over time, without the proper body nutrient, vitamin C , to help keep the blood vessel walls from cracking and requiring constant repair, these fatty substances can begin to build up and clog the blood vessels causing stroke and heart attack.

    Diagnosing heart disease ... maybe
By Donald G. McNeil Jr. The New York Times THURSDAY, JULY 7, 2005 NEW YORK 'It's a little bit in the guinea pig stage," Dr. Burton Cohen said. "I've only tried it on four people. Are you interested?" Cohen, a leading New York City radiologist, was proposing to slow down my pulse, inject iodine-based dye in my arm and photograph slices of my heart with his fastest CT scanner. "Absolutely," I said. Because he was still learning the technique, a novel method of diagnosing heart disease, the price was right: free. Insurers don't cover this procedure. My doctor had nominated me because I am a treatment-resistant patient. Each year at my annual physical, he begins with, "Well, you know my spiel," and tells me why I should be on statin drugs. Each year, when I refuse, he ends with a "well, it's your funeral" shrug.

When women do have pain, it more typically occurs in the abdomen (so they think it is just stomach problems), back, jaw or throat. Chronic fatigue, dizziness and swelling of the ankles or lower legs are other common symptoms none of which is typically associated with heart disease in men.
