Several theories exist to explain the link between periodontal disease and heart disease. One theory is that oral bacteria can affect the heart when they enter the blood stream, attaching to fatty plaques in the coronary arteries (heart blood vessels) and contributing to clot formation. Coronary artery disease is characterized by a thickening of the walls of the coronary arteries due to the buildup of fatty proteins. Blood clots can obstruct normal blood flow, restricting the amount of nutrients and oxygen required for the heart to function properly. This may lead to heart attacks. Another possibility is that the inflammation caused by periodontal disease increases plaque build up, which may contribute to swelling of the arteries.

Health Care Topics: Women and Heart Disease What is it? Heart disease is a disorder that affects the heart muscle or the blood vessels of the heart. Heart disease can manifest itself in many ways, including heart attack, heart failure and arrhythmias. Millions of women heading for menopause are also heading for heart disease - and many of them have it and don't know it. By the age of 50, most women are more overweight and more sedentary than men, and more women than men have high cholesterol total blood cholesterol over 240 a major risk factor for heart disease. All three factors overweight, inactivity and high cholesterol add up to make millions of American women candidates for heart disease. Women live more than one-third of their lives after menopause, so if they don't tackle heart disease head-on they could be setting the stage for years of disability. An estimated one million women already have heart disease when menopause hits, but because symptoms often are silent many don't know it.

In 1985 when I wrote the Lumen book, there was already a large body of data connecting both heart disease and a wide range of cancers to high rates of meat consumption. The sixth chapter of that book alone cited over 190 references, most of which were related to epidemiological correlations between reduced meat consumption and lower rates of cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis, and other degenerative diseases that are rampant in the West. In the 10 years since, there have been numerous studies that go beyond merely substantiating the benefits of a "meatless diet." Soy protein products, such as Heartline Meatless Meats and Heaven on Earth Fat Free Milk Replacer are finally being noticed for the value of their soybean protein protein which imparts cholesterol and triglyeride lowering properties in its own right.

Holiday stresses may increase risk of heart disease
October 12, 1999 Web posted at: 4:07 p.m. EDT (2007 GMT) VIDEO Health Correspondent Holly Firfer reports. Windows Media (CNN) As the holiday season approaches, researchers warn this festive time of year may be hazardous to your health. A study in this week's Circulation, a journal of the American Heart Association, found December and January have the highest number of deaths from coronary artery disease. "When we get closer and closer to the holiday season, our risks of dying from heart disease appears to be increased," cardiologist Steve Manoukain said. Manoukain said the stresses of preparing for the holidays combined with the tradition of overeating and drinking increases a person's risk for heart disease.

(En español) Congenital heart defects are heart problems present at birth. They happen when the heart does not develop normally before birth. About 8 out of every 1,000 infants are born with one or more heart or circulatory problems. Doctors usually do not know the cause of congenital heart defects, but they do know of some conditions that increase a child's risk of being born with a heart defect. They include

WHY ARE WOMEN SO SUPERIOR ?
    By DR.S.SIVASUBRAMANIAN, M.D.
    Asst.Professor of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery

This is one of the most fascinating questions clinical epidemiologists are asking themselves. There is a well-defined gender gap when it comes to an analysis of risks, diagnosis and treatment of coronary heart disease. This article will attempt to reconstruct the factors responsible for this gender gap, and provide some hints on preventing heart disease for both sexes.
What are the causes of the gender gap ?
"Men are from Mars, Women from Venus" - Gray JM
Traditionally, men and women have played different roles in society. These roles result in exposure to a different set of influences. These in turn act on the organ systems in different ways.
Unhealthy behaviour patterns Men have been exposed to a higher risk of unhealthy patterns in their lifestyles. Smoking, alcohol consumption, eating a lot of red meat and less of fruits and vegetables are more commonly seen in males. These factors however are only contributory, and not causative, of coronary disease. Work outside home While it has been suggested that work stresses are in a large part responsible for coronary heart disease, recent studies focussed on working women draw different conclusions. For instance, the heart disease risk has been shown to be higher only in subordinate, clerical posts. Successful working women are NOT at a higher risk.

The causes are difficult to determine and probably different in each case.
    • There is further evidence of a genetic contribution in that parents who have had one child with a congenital heart abnormality have an increased risk of their next children having some sort of congenital heart abnormality as well. The risk is increased from the 1 in a thousand range to 1 in twenty. (Remember, that means a 19 in 20 chance of having a child without the abnormality). The risk may be higher in occasional families with certain forms of congenital disease which are passed down frequently to children.
Infections in the mother, particularly early in pregnancy, such as rubella ("German measles") are associated with congenital heart abnormalities in those children.
The therapy of these disorders is sometimes quite complex, and should be discussed with your physician.

Linus Pauling lectures on Vitamin C and Heart Disease
    August 13, 1993
By Michael Wooldridge, MAWooldridge@lbl.gov One of the great scientific mavericks of this century spoke at LBL August 10, 1993 at a special seminar hosted by the Life Sciences Division's Lipoprotein and Atherosclerosis Group. Linus Pauling, two-time Nobel laureate and the world's foremost vitamin C proponent, entertained an overflow crowd in the Bldg. 66 auditorium with a talk on Vitamin C and Heart Disease. The lively 92-year-old first gave a candid history of how he came to take up the vitamin C cause. He was introduced to the subject by biochemist Irwin Stone in 1966. Five years later, he would pen "Vitamin C and the Common Cold," and then boldly go on to champion vitamin C as a fighter of more serious diseases such as cancer. According to Pauling, the vitamin's versatility in illness prevention arises from its role in the manufacture of collagen, the protein that gives shape to connective tissues and strength to skin and blood vessels. One of the great misfortunes of human evolution, Pauling explained, was when our human ancestors lost their ability to manufacture vitamin C. Pauling thinks the trait was probably discarded at a time when our ancestors had a diet of vitamin-rich plants and didn't need to produce the vitamin themselves. This left today's primates (including humans) as one of the few groups of animals that must get the vitamin through the diet.

Heart attack and stroke are leading killers, but not because science failed. On these pages you will learn that medical pioneers discovered long ago the cause of atherosclerosis ( the white plaques that grow in human arteries. It is little known that Linus Pauling invented a nontoxic, quick-acting cure for CVD more than ten years ago. This protocol, the Pauling-therapy , can eliminate painful chest (Angina) pain in as little as 10 days. Fortunately, Pauling filmed a one hour lecture which is available on video. The vast amount of information on these pages, both scientific and anecdotal, has been swelling like a tumor ever since Pauling made the claim that there is a cure for heart disease. The profession of medicine could surgically excise this tumor with a study or two. Instead, the profession has adopted a "head in the sand" stance, hoping the growth is benign, afraid of what the biopsy might show.

    ... Stroke INTRODUCTION

The UK has one of the highest rates of death from heart disease in the world - one British adult dies from the disease every three minutes - and stroke is the country's third biggest killer, claiming 70,000 lives each year.
Heart attacks occur when blood flow is blocked, often by a blood clot, while strokes are caused either by blocked or burst blood vessels in the brain. A range of other conditions, including heart failure, when blood is not pumped properly around the body, and congenital heart defects can also cause long term problems, and even death, for sufferers. Left atrium - The blood returns from the lungs to the upper left chamber of the heart where it is again briefly stored until the atrium fills, before flowing on to the left ventricle. Right atrium - “Impure” or “blue” blood returning from the atrium enters the heart here, where it is held until the atrium - or chamber - fills up. Left ventricle - This is the most powerful chamber of the heart. It pumps the newly oxygenated blood to the rest of the body through the aorta, or main artery. Right ventricle - This powerful pump propels blood into the pulmonary artery, the tube which carries blood to the lungs, where carbon dioxide in the blood is removed and oxygen added.
