http://www.health-heart.org/diabetes.htm
Adult (-type 2-) Diabetes Home Simple Français Good Food ... Index Why a Type 2 Diabetes Page in a Heart-Health Site? Well, both are related to nutrition and both can be prevented or helped by the same foods and supplements. Type 2 diabetes is normally preceded by decades of slowly increasing insulin, blood sugar, and belt-size .. and it is always healthier to sit on your fat than have your fat sit on you Early prevention is very effective but there come a point when insulin production permanently breaks down. Smart nutrition (and portion control) can first prevent overweight and diabetes , and eventually heart disease Both conditions are epidemic with 1 in 13 Americans and 1 in 3 of those over age 60 developing 'adult' diabetes. Most will develop heart, kidney, nerve and blood vessel diseases for an amazing 1/4th of total health care costs! Other countries have similar increasing rates. Later-in-life diabetes (during pregnancy being a warning) is an eventual one-way track to heart disease. What makes a diabetic? Simply put: when your pre-breakfast blood sugar ( plasma glucose) gets over 126 mg/dL (7 mmol/L).

Heart disease top killer of women
AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION SURVEY The survey of 1,000 women asked what was the greatest health threat they faced. 61% said cancer 7% said heart disease 1% said stroke May 10, 1999 Web posted at: 11:35 a.m. EDT (1535 GMT) In this story: Symptoms - where the genders diverge Studies of the sexes Reducing risk of heart disease RELATED STORIES, SITES From Medical Correspondent Rhonda Rowland (CNN) What is the leading cause of death in women? Most women will say it's breast cancer. So it comes as a surprise to many people that heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in both women and men. "One out of two women are going to have, live with, and/or die from heart disease and stroke," said Martha Hill, Ph.D., R.N., a professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and immediate past president of the American Heart Association. "It is amazing women are still not getting that message, and one has to ask why."

Heart Disease
Cardiovascular disease (CVD), including heart disease and stroke, remains the leading cause of death in the United States despite improvements in prevention, detection, and treatment. CVD is no longer thought of as a disease that primarily affects men as they age. It is a killer of people in the prime of life, with more than half of all deaths occurring among women. Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of disability among working adults. Stroke alone accounts for the disability of more than a million Americans. The economic impact on the health system grows larger as the population ages. In 2001, the estimated cost of health care expenditures and lost productivity attributable to cardiovascular diseases was $298 billion.
Cardiovascular Disease in New York State
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of death in New York State, killing more than 70,000 residents each year. For every person who dies from a heart attack or angina, 18 people live with these conditions. For every person who dies from a stroke, seven people cope with the consequences of a non-fatal event. Many of these survivors are disabled and cannot lead productive lives. They also are at high risk for additional events. These numbers are increasing as the epidemic of heart disease and stroke continues.

Director of
Communications TRANS FATTY ACIDS AND CORONARY HEART DISEASE
On November 12, 1999, the Food and Drug Administration announced its proposal to include the trans -fatty acid ( trans fat) content of foods on the standard food label. A 90-day period in which the public may comment then began. At present, only saturated fats are listed. Because many persons will be unfamiliar with trans fat and its health effects, we have prepared the following review.
BACKGROUND AND SCIENTIFIC REVIEW by Alberto Ascherio, Meir J. Stampfer, and Walter C. Willett Departments of Nutrition and Epidemiology , Harvard School of Public Health; The Channing Laboratory, Department of Medicine, Brigham and Women's Hospital What are trans fatty acids? Trans unsaturated fatty acids, or trans fats, are solid fats produced artificially by heating liquid vegetable oils in the presence of metal catalysts and hydrogen. This process, partial hydrogenation, causes carbon atoms to bond in a straight configuration and remain in a solid state at room temperature. Naturally-occurring unsaturated fatty acids have carbon atoms that line up in a bent shape, resulting in a liquid state at room temperature. Which foods contain trans fatty acids?

Emotional attitude unrelated to heart disease, study finds
BOSTON, Massachusetts (Reuters) Feeling depressed? Lonely? Stressed? A new study finds those feelings won't affect your chance of having a heart attack. A study of 630 U.S. Army personnel found that levels of anxiety, hostility, depression and stress bear no relationship to the likelihood of developing clogged arteries, according to a report in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

39. CHD Explained
What Is Coronary heart disease? Picture of an artery with one end normal and the a partial blockage heart disease is caused by narrowing of the coronary
http://nhlbisupport.com/chd1/chdexp.htm
What Is Coronary Heart Disease? Heart disease is caused by narrowing of the coronary arteries that feed the heart. Like any muscle, the heart needs a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients, which are carried to it by the blood in the coronary arteries. When the coronary arteries become narrowed or clogged by cholesterol and fat depositsa process called atherosclerosisand cannot supply enough blood to the heart, the result is coronary heart disease (CHD). If not enough oxygen-carrying blood reaches the heart, you may experience chest pain called angina. If the blood supply to a portion of the heart is completely cut off by total blockage of a coronary artery, the result is a heart attack. This is usually due to a sudden closure from a blood clot forming on top of a previous narrowing. Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that occurs naturally in all parts of the body and that your body needs to function normally. It is present in cell walls or membranes everywhere in the body, including the brain, nerves, muscle, skin, liver, intestines, and heart. Your body uses cholesterol to produce many hormones, vitamin D, and the bile acids that help to digest fat. It takes only a small amount of cholesterol in the blood to meet these needs. If you have too much cholesterol in your bloodstream, the excess is deposited in arteries, including the coronary arteries, where it contributes to the narrowing and blockages that cause the signs and symptoms of heart disease.
