What does diabetes have to do with heart disease?
People with diabetes are more likely to get heart disease. When you have diabetes, your blood sugar level is often much higher than it should be. Too much sugar in the blood can cause damage to many parts of the body, including blood vessels. Some lifestyle habits may also raise the risk of heart disease. Here are some things you can do to lower your risk: Return to top
1. Keep your blood sugar level under control.
Keeping your blood sugar level under control will lower your risk of heart disease. Many people with diabetes check their blood sugar level every day to make sure that their medicines and diet and exercise are working to keep blood sugar in a normal range. What is heart disease? There are many types of heart disease. About 25% of all Americans have one or more types of cardiovascular disease. The major types of heart disease are atherosclerosis coronary, rheumatic congenital, ... angina and arrhythmia . Heart disease can arise from congenital defects, infection, narrowing of the coronary arteries, high blood pressure , or disturbances. The first stages of heart disease are lesions and cracks forming in the blood vessel walls normally at the points of highest pressure or stress (near the heart). The second stage is the body trying to repair itself by depositing fatty substances ( cholesterol , lipoproteins) inside the blood vessels to fill the cracks. Over time, without the proper body nutrient, vitamin C , to help keep the blood vessel walls from cracking and requiring constant repair, these fatty substances can begin to build up and clog the blood vessels causing stroke and heart attack.

Low Grain and Carbohydrate Diets Treat Hypoglycemia, Heart Disease, Diabetes Cancer and Nearly ALL Chronic Illness
by Joseph Brasco, MD Page 2 References Unfortunately, the debate over the validity of this concept has primarily been waged in the media and lay publications and not in the scientific journals. Many of the popular books which support this position are gimmicky, and often, lack adequate scientific referencing. Yet, at their core is very important concept limiting the intake of carbohydrates, (especially as cereal grains and starches), will improve human health. Some critics claim that reduced carbohydrate diets are a fashion trend. Well, this so called trend actually dates back some time. Anthropological study of early hominids has concluded that they lived as hunters-gathers. While nuts, seeds, vegetation and fruit made up an important part of the hunter- gather's diet, his mainstay was hunted or scavenged animal prey.

Nutritious food improves health Stringent dieting can dramatically reduce the risk of heart disease, a study shows.
Researchers at Washington University examined people who had curbed their calorie intake and avoided processed foods for a number of years. They were found to have the health of people decades younger, the study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences said. UK experts said even small adjustments to diet can improve people's health. The research suggests that long-term dieting can provide powerful protection against both heart disease and diabetes. Levels of "bad" cholesterol and triglyceride blood fats were very low in the people studied. And the group, whose average age was 50, had blood pressure readings similar to that of the average 10-year-old. Calorie restriction has a powerful protective effect against diseases associated with ageing
Professor John Holloszy Professor John Holloszy, from Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, who led the study, said: "It's very clear from these findings that calorie restriction has a powerful protective effect against diseases associated with ageing."

A University of Southampton team found blood flow through the unborn baby's liver in late pregnancy was crucial. Their study in Circulation Research found more blood flows through the livers of babies who have slim mothers or who eat unbalanced diets. This can affect liver function in later life, increasing the risk of heart disease and diabetes in the offspring. This study shows how important it is for women to eat a balanced diet packed full of fruit and vegetables, before and during pregnancy
Dr Charmaine Griffiths, British Heart Foundation Researchers from the University of Southampton, along with colleagues from Bergen and Oslo, looked at how a mother's diet and slimness could have long-term effects on a developing baby. They used ultrasound to measure the blood flow to the liver of the developing baby in late pregnancy in 381 mothers-to-be.

FDA AUTHORIZES NEW CORONARY HEART DISEASE HEALTH CLAIM FOR PLANT STEROL AND PLANT STANOL ESTERS
The FDA has authorized use of labeling health claims about the role of plant sterol or plant stanol esters in reducing the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) for foods containing these substances. This interim final rule is based on FDA's conclusion that plant sterol esters and plant stanol esters may reduce the risk of CHD by lowering blood cholesterol levels. Coronary heart disease, one of the most common and serious forms of cardiovascular disease, causes more deaths in the U.S. than any other disease. Risk factors for CHD include high total cholesterol levels and high levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol.

Eating patterns and the risk of coronary heart disease
There is a substantial amount of research on the effects of individual nutrients or foods on the risk of coronary heart disease. Nutrients and foods, however, are eaten in combination. This study examines the overall diet to quantify the association between eating patterns and the risk of coronary heart disease.
Bottom line
A diet high in fruit, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, poultry and fish reduces the risk of coronary heart disease by 24%. A diet high in red and processed meats, refined grains, chips, desserts and sweets increases the risk of coronary heart disease by 46%.

TT Fung et al. Dietary patterns and the risk of coronary heart disease in women. Archives of Internal Medicine 2001 161: 1857-1862.
Study
The women were followed for 12 years. A total of 821 cases of coronary heart disease were confirmed.
Results
Women with high prudent scores were less likely to smoke, use more vitamin supplements and consume more folate, fibre and protein. Women with high Western scores were more likely to smoke, use fewer vitamin supplements and consume less folate and fibre.
