Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Most heart attacks are caused by a clot that blocks one of the coronary arteries (the blood vessels that bring blood and oxygen to the heart muscle). The clot usually forms in a coronary artery that has been previously narrowed from changes related to atherosclerosis . The atherosclerotic plaque (buildup) inside the arterial wall sometimes cracks, and this triggers the formation of a clot, also called a thrombus. A clot in the coronary artery interrupts the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart muscle, leading to the death of heart cells in that area. The damaged heart muscle loses its ability to contract, and the remaining heart muscle needs to compensate for that weakened area.

Coronary Heart Disease: Reducing Your Risk
Printer-friendly version Email this article
What is coronary heart disease?
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is sometimes called coronary artery disease. A coronary artery is a blood vessel that carries blood to your heart. Your arteries are like narrow tubes. A fatty substance called plaque can build up in your arteries, blocking or slowing the flow of blood and oxygen through them. This can happen in any artery, but when it happens in the coronary arteries, your heart doesn't get the blood and oxygen it needs to work properly. Coronary heart disease can lead to serious health problems, including angina (pain or pressure in the chest) and heart attack. Return to top
What causes CHD?
Both men and women can get CHD. It can be hereditary (run in your family). It might also develop as you get older and plaque builds up in your arteries over the years. You may get CHD if you are overweight or if you have high blood pressure or diabetes. High cholesterol may also lead to CHD (see below). CHD can stem from making unhealthy choices such as smoking, eating a high-fat diet and not exercising enough. Return to top

A daily diet of wine, dark chocolate, fruits and vegetables, almonds and garlic along with fish four times a week could reduce heart disease in the U.S. population by a whopping 76%, say the authors of a study published in this week's BMJ .Results of dining on the Polymeal were most dramatic for men, who were projected to live on average 6.6 years longer than those not eating the meal. Men will also gain nine additional years free of heart disease, the study indicates, and those that do develop it will be ill for fewer years of their lives. Women eating the Polymeal also will live significantly longer nearly five years more than women not eating the meal. They will also put off the onset of heart disease for eight additional years. Non-Pharmaceutical Alternative The study authors reviewed the medical literature on how much each of the polymeal ingredients reduces heart disease, blood pressure or cholesterol levels. (Drinking 150ml of wine daily, for instance, reduces heart disease by 32%.) They then calculated the combined effect of consuming all of the ingredients and projected the potential effect across an ongoing study of American adults.

General Illness Information
Common Name:
Coronary Artery Disease Medical Term:
Ischemic Heart Disease Description: Coronary artery disease is a condition in which fatty deposits (atheroma) accumulate in the cells lining the wall of the coronary arteries. These fatty deposits build up gradually and irregularly in the large branches of the two main coronary arteries which encircle the heart and are the main source of its blood supply. This process is called atherosclerosis which leads to narrowing or hardening of the blood vessels supplying blood to the heart muscle (the coronary arteries ).This results in ischemia ( inability to provide adequate oxygen) to heart muscle and this can cause damage to the heart muscle . Complete occlusion of the blood vessel leads to a heart attack (myocardial infarction). In the United States , cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among both sexes, and coronary artery disease is the commonest cause of cardiovascular disease.

Heart Disease and Diet
Heart disease is by far America's number one killer. SUDDEN DEATH is its most common first symptom. Sadly, one out of every three Americans is at high risk and most don't even know it. American Heart Association recommends a "balanced diet" and says: "When eaten on a regular basis as part of a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet, soluble fiber has been shown to help lower blood cholesterol."
The Realities of Getting a "Balanced Diet"
What are the challenges to a healthy diet? People today are typically crisis managers. We don't take steps to ensure good health until it is too late. Probably the major challenge to a better diet is inconvenience. Snacks and processed foods are convenient. Fruits and vegetables often need refrigeration and preparation. Try ordering carrot sticks or broccoli the next time you're in your favorite fast-food restaurant. To get the recommended 25 to 35 grams of fiber per day probably means you need a supplement. But be label conscious. Major requirements to look for in a high fiber supplement are that it is low calorie, from multiple fiber sources, and contains no saturated fat. Cost is also a factor. A WSDF supplement should cost no more than the snacks or other processed foods it is (hopefully) replacing in your diet, i.e. $2.00 to $3.00 per day. Too low a price can mean low quality and/or untested fiber sources. Taste is important too.

Diet and Heart Disease
Diet is an important factor in heart disease. However, the issue of diet and nutrition is complex, as it is influenced by a range of social, cultural, economic and physiological factors, including the available food supply and its cost. The role of fat intake in heart disease is now fairly clearly established. The direct protective effect of specific diets or dietary changes is less clear but there are general health benefits in promoting healthy eating. Overweight and obesity are established risk factors for heart disease. Strategies to reduce the prevalence of overweight include interventions affecting behaviour, physical activity, diet and combinations of all three approaches. These interventions include salt reduction, dietary fibre increase, and an adequate intake of fresh fruit and vegetables. Study: Pollution and heart disease don't mix
WASHINGTON (CNN) People with heart disease may think they're doing their body good by exercising. But exercise isn't necessarily a good thing if it's being done in polluted air, according to a new study. The new findings reveal the importance of avoiding outdoor exercise on hazy days. Many researchers have previously reported a link between pollution and increased heart attacks and deaths. The new study, reported in Monday's issue of Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, claims to be the first to examine heart strain during exercise - showing decreased oxygen supply to heart muscle when air pollution is high. People with heart disease were about three times more likely to have decreased oxygen supply to their heart muscle during exercise after periods of high level air pollution than when they were tested after periods of negligible air pollution, said Dr. Juha Pekkanen, a senior researcher at the National Public Health Institute, Unit of Environmental Epidemiology in Kuopio, Finland. Pollution health tips
  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activity when ozone smog or other pollution levels are high. Highest levels typically occur in the afternoon.

O kay, okay, you're tired of being told to improve your diet. But that really is sound advice. An ever-increasing body of evidence shows that compounds in certain foods may slash the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, osteoporosis and adult-onset diabetes all leading killers of American men and women. When it comes to getting a little health insurance from good nutrition, the rule-of-thumb is easy: balance, variety and moderation. You may also want to add vitamin supplements to that formula because various nutrients are hard to get even when you plan meals meticulously (see Vitamin Power Another important part of the stay-healthy equation is physical activity. You can up your odds against obesity and poor health by enjoying regular aerobic exercise, such as swimming, jogging, and cycling, plus muscle-strengthening exercises like weight-lifting.
