Where can I find lesson plans for students with disabilities? You can find lesson plans in books, articles, and on the internet. There are a variety of books and articles that contain sample lesson plans for students with disabilities. However, there are very few websites that provide lesson plans specifically for students with disabilities, as students with disabilities often require lessons tailored to their individual needs. We recommend that you visit websites with lesson plans for general classrooms and make modifications as needed. This FAQ contains internet resources for lesson plans, and also contains citations from the ERIC database for resources with sample lesson plans. Following are links to additional frequently asked questions (FAQs) as well as selected citations from the ERIC database and the search terms we used to find the citations.

    http://nationalhistoryday.org/03_educators/teach99/lesson5/lesson5_prep.htm
Medicine, Healing, and the Body by Jodi Vandenberg-Daves, National History Day
Lesson Objectives The sections from the texts that follow are too short to allow students to compare and contrast what various cultures knew. Rather, taken together, these excerpts are meant to offer students the opportunity to explore how ancient healers approached illness and health, and what observations they made about the human body in sickness and in health. In the enrichment and extension section, students are asked to consider the long-term significance of developments in ancient medicine. Preparation The activities outlined here would be enriched by having students read selections of their world history textbooks on the cultures of ancient India, China and Greece. Discussion of current issues in medicine would also help students develop a context for interpreting these sources. A brainstorming session on debates in modern medicine might include discussion of so-called "alternative medicine," the growing interest of the American Medical Association in social problems, concerns about over-prescription of antibiotics, renewed public interest in the role of diet in health maintenance, and the role of physicians in modern society. Activities You may use the following questions to stimulate discussion:
  • What causes of disease were observed in these ancient texts?

    Putting Down Roots: Grass Planting
GREAT GREEN GOBS: AN EXPERIMENT WITH ALGAE Discussion As illustrated in Chesapeake: A Bay Trippers Adventure, underwater Bay grasses, also called SAV, are an extremely important part of the Bay's ecosystem. Bay grasses help to keep the water healthy by absorbing nutrients and producing oxygen. They provide food and shelter for many species, including the Blue Crab. The Bay has lost a large portion of its grass beds in recent years. One of the main causes for this decline has been a rise in run-off draining into the bay. Run-off is water that literally runs off the land, carrying soil, chemicals, and other debris with it. It fills the Bay with sediment and nutrients that lower the water quality. Water with high levels of nutrients produces algae. These microscopic plants grow so densely that they block sunlight from reaching underwater grasses. Without the light, the grasses cannot survive. In addition, as the algae dies and decomposes, it depletes the oxygen that plants and other organisms need to survive.

Reading Skills Lesson Plan: Using Word Parts to Infer Meaning
Student Resource: "Jump for Center," by Barbara O. Webb
Media Type: Short Story Objectives: After completing this lesson, students will be able to:
    • Discuss measures of skills-related fitness and identify physical activities and sports that make use of them.
    • Identify rules of effective communication and explain the importance of using them in social situations.
    • Apply the reading skill of using word parts to infer meaning to a story about developing sports skills.
Introducing the Lesson Challenge students to identify the greatest living shortstop in baseball and to defend their answers with hard data. Allow a moment or two for discussion, which may be quite animated. Elicit through the discussion that one measure of a great defensive shortstop is range-the ability to cover a lot of ground when fielding a ball. Reveal that range is in turn a function of several measures of skills-related fitness, in particular agility, the ability to move quickly and gracefully. Invite students who participated in the discussion to come to the front of the class to settle another dispute. Ask them to name the greatest living ballet dancer and to defend their answers with hard data. If students are unable to name and/or discuss dancers, point out that playing shortstop and ballet dancing actually have much in common. Note that these dancers, like shortstops, need to be agile. Explain, moreover, that the jobs of shortstop and ballet dancer require good balance and good reaction time (the ability to respond rapidly to an event or other stimulus).

State school board officials (WCPO/WCPO.com) Reported by: AP/ 9News Web produced by: Neil Relyea Photographed by: 3/9/04 11:23:18 PM The debate over the teaching of evolution appeared ready to move from the state school board to courts following the board's approval Tuesday of an evolution lesson plan over the objections of several scientific organizations. "They're standing in line high school teachers, board members, parents, the students themselves," said Patricia Princehouse, a Case Western Reserve University philosophy professor who has led lobbying efforts against the lessons. Critics of the lessons say a lawsuit challenging the plan's constitutionality is almost certain. They say it contains elements of intelligent design, the theory that says a higher power must have been involved in the creation of life. The plan is an optional set of lessons for schools to use in the teaching of science standards for the new tenth-grade graduation test.
