Safety Lesson Plans
Safety Art (grades 1+) prepares children for International Walk to School Day. The lesson reviews the four most fantastic reasons to walk and ride and the six simple steps to staying safe. The children make picket style signs to carry and large banners to place at staging areas and in front of schools. Making these signs gets kids excited about the event and equips them with a device which makes them more visible in traffic. Download the pdf Click here for an 11x17 safety poster Stop! Look! Listen! (2nd grade) is a lesson addressing the behavior which statistically causes the greatest number of injuries for child pedestrians: failure to stop at the edge and look for traffic. The lesson uses direct instruction, NHTSA's video Safe Crossings With Willie Whistle, modeling and practice. Children will learn the importance of stopping at every edge, looking left, right, then left again (all the way over the shoulder), listening for cars and only crossing if it's clear. The Walking Obstacle Course (2nd grade) The course is a simulation of street crossing situations. Students will demonstrate the procedure of stopping at the edge, looking left then right, then left again (looking all of the way over their shoulder) before crossing, doing so only if it is clear. Four obstacles: legally parked cars, cars parked in the crosswalk, the shrub (visual obstacle) and the moving car, give students an opportunity to put into practice what they learned in Stop! Look! Listen!

The intent of the activities is to introduce the systems of the body to the students. The purpose of reading the children's book, The Magic School Bus: Inside the Human Body by Joanna Cole, is to provoke interest in the study of the systems of the human body. It is to be used as an introductory tool that stimulates the thought processes of the students. Although direct teaching can sometimes be overused in a classroom, it can be used as a very effective teaching technique when learning the names and functions of body systems.

Dietitians of Canada and Kraft Canada recognize five initiatives from across the country with the Speaking of Food and Healthy Living Award Toronto, Ontario (May 26, 2005) Speaking of Food and Healthy Living Awards , sponsored by Kraft Canada and Dietitians of Canada. Held in connection with the Dietitians of Canada National Conference, the Awards recognized one national and four regional programs for their work in helping Canadians to make healthy food and activity choices. The Alberta-based program M.O.V.E. (Making our Vermilion Energized) M.O.V.E. is a community-based program in Vermilion, Alberta that brings low-cost healthy living programs and ideas to families. Created by Buffalo Trail Public Schools, the program includes low-cost summer camps, open gym nights for families, loonie swim nights, an after-school cooking club and school health fairs. Local parent councils have input into school nutrition policies and teachers have curriculum-appropriate lesson plans for physical activity and healthy eating. In addition, a partnership was formed with the local adult learning organization to provide free classes for parents on budgeting and meal planning for their families.
"Canadians are overwhelmed by information about nutrition and physical activity. This is an excellent opportunity to celebrate a program that is truly making a difference," says Marilynn Small, Manager, Nutrition Communications, Kraft Canada Inc. "And at a time when national obesity rates are at an all time high, this is a great story about a community that has found a way to address the issue locally."
