This program leads toward, but does not satisfy, the requirements for recommendation to the Michigan Department of Education for K-12 endorsement in speech-language impaired, certification code "SB." This program of studies meets all requirements of the Council for Exceptional Children and of the American Speech-Hearing-Language Association. Secondary Education SE310 Student Assistance Seminar Fall-Spring Semesters This course will enable pre-service teachers to understand how to utilize a school-based, systematic approach in dealing with complex student issues such as substance abuse and mental health problems. Student Assistance Seminar examines the etiology of problems in adolescence especially as they relate to school failure. Specifically, adolescent substance abuse, mental health problems, and violence will be addressed. Students will understand the purpose of student assistance programs nation-wide and how addressing serious problems in youth requires a systematic approach. The use of professional behavioral observation and reporting will be stressed and the limitations of extending assistance consistent with the current legal framework will be discussed. Students will develop the skills necessary to engage parents and students in productive conversations about non-academic issues. 1 credit hour.

Secondary Education Program Description
The secondary education program prepares you to teach in grades 6 through 12. Secondary educators teach in high schools, junior high schools, and middle schools. Secondary teachers prepare to teach in one or more content areas. A general description of the three parts of the 126 credit program is listed below. Also see program requirements General Education
Courses in communications, humanities, social sciences,
quantitative sciences, and natural sciences provide you, the prospective secondary teacher, with broad content background. A teacher is, first of all, a well-educated citizen. The general education portion of the program is directed toward this goal. Teaching Field(s)
In-depth preparation in one teaching field (subject area) is required as a part of your preparation to be a secondary education teacher. Secondary Health Education Minor
Return to Top A 2.75 overall grade-point average is required for all minor course work taken at UW-Madison, excluding prerequisites and Education course work. This grade-point average may be modified by the Last 60 Credits Rule The secondary teaching minor in Health Education is primarily available for students with majors leading to secondary certification in English, Family and Consumer Science, Physical Education, Science, Social Studies, or school nurse certification. This minor prepares teachers to: (1) teach health as a separate course or as a planned integral part of other areas of instruction and (2) assist the school administration and teaching staff in developing a broad school health program. Note: Certification in a major area of interest must accompany the completion of this minor; students cannot be certified to teach only in a minor area. Certification is also available to practicing teachers. Secondary Minor Course Work Complete a minimum of 25 credits, excluding prerequisite course work and professional education requirements.
