Academic subjects: The high school academic curriculum is divided into the main subject areas listed below. These courses are not exhaustive of the courses included in each subject area. Mathematics: Includes courses in basic math, general math, applied math, algebra, geometry, and advanced math. Advanced math includes algebra 2, trigonometry, analytic geometry, precalculus, probability and statistics, and calculus. Science: Includes courses in biology, chemistry, and physics, as well as survey courses and those in other areas. Advanced science includes chemistry, physics, and advanced biology. English: Includes survey and skills courses, as well as courses in literature, composition and writing, and speech. Advanced English includes honors and advanced placement courses, including honors courses taken prior to the senior year. Chair: David Foulk The Department of Middle and Secondary Education consists of six program areas: English education, health education, mathematics education, multilingual/multicultural education, science education, and social science education. Each of these program areas offers undergraduate degrees to prepare middle and high school teachers in specific disciplines. Successful completion of a degree qualifies candidates for certification to teach in high schools in Florida and for national certification. Please refer to the 'Teacher Preparation General Education Requirements' section of the "College of Education" chapter in this General Bulletin for additional details.

It is responsive to contemporary educational concerns and provides for strict coordination of the varied administrative components, including admission, candidate assessment, and program evaluation. The program is articulated with the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Standards of Quality and Effectiveness for Professional Teacher Preparation Programs, the California Standards for the Teaching Profession, the California Teaching Performance Expectations (TPEs), and the Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA).

  • develop high standards of professionalism and classroom practice as subject teachers, in their pastoral role and as members of the whole school community
  • link practice in schools to recent and relevant research, including the renowned work undertaken at King's
  • become aware of the broader educational context.
Outline of the Course Teaching is academically and professionally challenging and we expect hard work from you and, in return, offer much academic and personal support, including individual and small group tutorials. The course combines the theory and practice of education and we work in close partnership with schools in designing and delivering our course. For 24 of the 36 weeks the training takes place in schools, mainly in two secondary schools but with a short primary school experience at the beginning and another one near the end of the course, to raise your awareness about progression from primary to secondary school.

Advising Information
All new, transfer, and re-admitted students are encouraged to visit the Advising Center in McMullen Hall, Room 100, to meet with an academic advisor. New students will receive information regarding General Education requirements and Plan of Study worksheets related to their major and minor programs. Transfer and readmitted students will work with an advisor to complete a transcript evaluation and to develop a Plan of Study. Students majoring in bachelor degree programs in the College of Education and Human Services will be advised through the Advising Center until their sophomore year. At that time, students will be assigned a faculty member for advising. Students pursuing a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts with a teaching certificate option will be assigned a major advisor from the content area in the College of Arts and Sciences and a professional education advisor from the College of Education and Human Services.
