ABOUT THE DEGREE The undergraduate program combines liberal arts and professional education. The Programs in Occupational Therapy offers a combined BS/MSOT program leading to the Bachelor of Science in Therapeutic Studies after the fourth year and the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy after five years of coursework and a minimum of 24 weeks of supervised fieldwork. Following the successful completion of the fieldwork and receiving the Master of Science in OT degree, the student is eligible to apply to take the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) National Certification Examination. Successful completion of this examination qualifies the graduate to enter practice as an Occupational Therapist, Registered. Passing the national examination qualifies the OTR for working in states in which the practice of occupational therapy is regulated.

Occupational and physical therapists are part of the interdisciplinary health care team that manages the care of patients seen in the Rheumatology Clinic at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. The focus of therapy is to maintain or restore the ability to function in your daily environment. Therapists assist patients and their families with decreasing the affects of their condition on their physical function. Occupational and physical therapists:

  • Develop a home exercise program
  • Provide patient and family education regarding the daily management of their condition with regard to achieving the highest possible level of physical activity
How are occupational and physical therapy different?
Occupational therapists focus on the fingers, hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders and neck. They look at how you use these body parts in daily activities such as handwriting, getting dressed and washing your hair, carrying items and playing sports. Physical Therapists focus on the feet, ankles, knees, hips, back and neck. They look at how you use these body parts for activities such as walking, playing or participating in sports. They also help you with good posture while sitting at the computer and doing daily activities.

Welcome to the Home Page of the Centre for Occupational and Environmental Health ( COEH ) at the University of Manchester.
This year (2005), our unit will be 60 years old. Therefore we extend a special welcome to visitors to our website. Our Centre undertakes both research and teaching. Our main teaching activities are in postgraduate Diploma and Masters programmes in Occupational Medicine and Occupational Hygiene. We currently admit the largest number of postgraduate students in these categories in the British Isles and we endeavour to give them the best and most varied learning environment possible. The majority of teaching is done via 'Distance Learning' though the department has a popular Continuing Professional Development programme and runs many short courses. The COEH undertakes research upon the effects of occupation and the environment on health and some of these projects are illustrated on our website.   • Opportunities should be best for persons with a bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation or in recreation with a concentration in therapeutic recreation.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Recreational therapists, also referred to as therapeutic recreation specialists , provide treatment services and recreation activities to individuals with disabilities or illnesses. Using a variety of techniques, including arts and crafts, animals, sports, games, dance and movement, drama, music, and community outings, therapists treat and maintain the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of their clients. Therapists help individuals reduce depression, stress, and anxiety; recover basic motor functioning and reasoning abilities; build confidence; and socialize effectively so that they can enjoy greater independence, as well as reduce or eliminate the effects of their illness or disability. In addition, therapists help integrate people with disabilities into the community by teaching them how to use community resources and recreational activities. Recreational therapists should not be confused with recreation and fitness workers, who organize recreational activities primarily for enjoyment. (

Occupational Division: Health Occupations Education
In small communities like mine, clinical sites for students are sometimes in short supply. I have included veterinary clinics, chiropractic offices, child care centers, family clinics and local pharmacies as well as the local hospital and nursing homes to student rotations. Our community is rich with talent and experience, and luckily, most professionals are genuinely interested in forming working partnerships to provide the best training for our students. Because of strong demand by our local hospital, our school began an evening LPN program for our community this year. This training opportunity in a community our size is very exciting for all of us, and I feel very fortunate to be included in the planning and the organization of the program. We're doing our best to respond to our community's needs and maintain quality health care services for our citizens.
