Methods Results All students successfully completed the year. There were no statistical differences in marks at summative assessment in each of the five core rotations between the students in this pilot and their peers at the metropolitan or rural hospital based clinical schools. Conclusion The results suggest that isolated rural general practice could provide a more substantial role in medical student education.

The why, where, and how of global health teaching
Medical students the world over are getting more involved in global issues. The demand for teaching is there, but will medical schools respond? These are some of the good clinical reasons why global health issues should be on the medical curriculum. But there are others. As noted elsewhere, the ability to appreciate diversity, challenge prejudice, analyse change and the forces that shape society, and to be able to function in a range of circumstances, are important skills for any professional to learn.
Big issues, small world
NASA Ideally, these should be part of the present medical curriculum, whether in public health or elsewhere. Evidence shows, however, that they are not always there. Surveys suggest in depth teaching of international health issue in medical schools is rare. And given that diversity, prejudice, and change are present in every society, however influenced by the outside world they are, you would think that teaching about these issues would be commonplace in training for a professional life that involves such a high degree of human interaction. But in my experience this is not the case, including in public health curriculums, which are often dominated by discussion of statistics and which sometimes do not reflect the huge and fascinating role that social and economic forces have in shaping the wellbeing of the British population.

Teaching students who have mental health problems
Guidance
Students with mental health difficulties are likely to be more than usually sensitive to the kinds of stresses which affect all students (e.g. academic pressure, isolation, homesickness, friends and relationships). In addition, their ability to keep up with work may be affected by disturbed sleep patterns or the effect of medication. The stigma that is often attached to mental health difficulties may be an additional barrier, and it is therefore particularly important for lecturers to be sensitive to the needs of these students.
Depression
Depression may also be a symptom or side effect of some other condition or illness, for example, cancer or chronic pain problems. It may appear as apathy, disinterest, inattention, impaired concentration, irritability, or as fatigue or other physical symptoms, resulting from changes in eating, sleeping or other living patterns. Anxiety

Effects of medication
Some students who are undergoing treatment take prescription medication to help control disturbing feelings, ideas and behaviour. This medication might cause side effects such as drowsiness, disorientation and lack of motivation.

The reason for becoming involved in the scientific field of Community Medicine, which is only one of many other subjects encountered in the course of your medical education is explained by paragraph 1 of the “ärztliche Approbationsordnung” (licensing requirements for physicians in Gemany). It defines the higher aims of medical education and the derived competencies of the future physician. The paragraph reads:
“Medical training is based on science and is practice and patient oriented. Its aim is to impart
  • basic medical, interdisciplinary and methodical knowledge practical and psychological skills the intellectual and ethical foundation of medicine and a medical approach dedicated to the individual as well as to the general public
which is needed for independent and responsible prevention, diagnosis, therapy and rehabilitation, while taking into account the patients’ psychological and social situation as well as developments in science, the environment and society.
It includes the ability to develop one’s knowledge, the willingness to constantly update one’s knowledge and skills and to cooperate with other physicians and members of the healthcare community.”
