The materials organized can be adapted for sequential one-hour sessions or for daylong seminars. How Will Clinicians Benefit? This curriculum teaches the skills and knowledge to help health professionals provide culturally competent care. At the end of training, participants will be more effective in eliciting accurate clinical information and providing appropriate care to their patients, regardless of their cultural background. Clinicians also learn how to work with medical interpreters and acquire new approaches to addressing cultural differences.

The Division of General Internal Medicine (GIM) of Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine combines outstanding clinical services, innovative and energetic educational programs, and nationally-recognized clinical and health services research programs. We have over 50 faculty in GIM, and our backgrounds are extremely diverse. Our clinicians including primary care physicians, hospitalists, and experts in medical consultation, perioperative medicine, student health, and women's health. The full-time faculty's clinical services are provided via the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation (NMFF) and the VA Chicago Health Care System Lakeside Division (VA Lakeside). All of our facilities have state of the art electronic medical records, and many of the faculty work actively to continuously improve our electronic medical record system. Several projects are currently underway to explore how the electronic medical record can be used to improve quality of care and ensure patient safety. Our faculty occupy most of the teaching leadership positions in the Department of Medicine , as well as a relatively large number of leadership positions in our medical students' pre-clinical education. GIM faculty have also played central roles in developing the innovative Patient, Physician, and Society curriculum, which now extends throughout all four years of undergraduate medical education. The major teaching activities of the division as a whole include 1)

Eyes Without a Face:
Stem Cell Research and Corneal Implants
by
Kari Mergenhagen , University at Buffalo, State University of New York
INTRODUCTION
"Eyes Without a Face" tells the story of Lucy, a woman who has endured blindness most of her life. She has adapted well to her situation, but has continued to hope that one day she might see. I designed the story to stimulate interest in the use of stem cell therapy to restore vision, the function of the cornea, and the differences between adult and embryonic stem cells. The case should provide introductory knowledge, encourage discussion, and generate questions. There are ten million people in the world that are affected by corneal blindness ( Kingsley 2002 ). Cornea transplants have proven to be one of the most successfully transplanted tissues, although lack of donors, cornea transplant failures, and deficient universal access leave many people blinded for life. Additionally, there is a 40 percent failure rate over a 10-year period ( Johnson 2001 ). Recent scientific developments have shown promise for people suffering from corneal blindness and transplant failure. The advent of artificial and bioengineered corneas may open the world of vision to many struggling to cope without sight.

Department of Health State Health Department Cites 54 Teaching Hospitals for Resident Working Hour Violations
New York Only State In Nation That Limits Resident Work Hours ALBANY, June 26, 2002 – The New York State Health Department (the Department) today announced that 54 of the 82 teaching hospitals inspected in New York State since November 2001 were cited for violations related to resident working hours. To date, New York University Hospital ($24,000) has been fined for recurring resident work hour violation. The Department is now reviewing the results of the inspections of other hospitals to determine if fines are warranted. State Health Commissioner Antonia C. Novello said, "The results of the initial inspections of State teaching hospitals further build on Governor Pataki’s commitment to ensure that New York continues to have the best and safest health care system in the nation. New York is the only State in the nation that limits resident work hours and ensures that residents have adequate rest. The Governor has made it clear that hospitals need to comply with resident working hours and he has provided us with the resources to inspect and the tools to fine hospitals that are not complying with the regulations." "It is also critical that the residents providing the care to patients receive necessary training and experience under appropriate working conditions. The State’s work with hospitals in this area will further strengthen the capabilities of New York’s physicians and hospitals to deliver high quality care to patients."
