Author: Brian Lunn, Senior Lecturer
Department of Psychiatry, University of Newcastle upon Tyne b.s.lunn@ncl.ac.uk 1. Undergraduate teaching
Medical students are usually introduced to mental health teaching from the perspective of the basic sciences. Traditional teaching divided undergraduate teaching into pre-clinical and clinical phases. This is changing as many schools move towards an integrated curriculum (i.e. clinical material is taught from the early stages of the course). Students are taught about brain anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and pharmacology. Parallel teaching introduces psychology, sociology and ethics. In the early stages of clinical teaching, as basic clinical assessment is taught (interview and examination skills), specific skills relating to a mental health history and examination are introduced. Students continue into their clinical years where they will have at least one attachment in mental health. Students will spend, on average, 8 weeks in mental health settings during their clinical stages. The format of this will be determined by each school, but a core skill base is defined by the General Medical Council. Students will also have contact with patients with mental health problems in other clinical attachments; particularly in Primary Care.

TEACHING PUBLIC HEALTH LAW
(Reprinted from: The Law Teacher By Edward P. Richards Last spring semester, I taught a new course entitled The Constitution and the Public's Health. This essay reports what I learned in doing this, and what I hope students can learn from a public health law course. Public health is the specialty of taking care of all the little things that make modern civilization possible: food sanitation, the control of rats and vermin, communicable diseases, nuisances, dogs, dangerous buildings, general environmental problems, and about everything else that can make you sick, fall on your head, or otherwise interfere with the health and safety of the community. Public health initiatives were responsible for nearly tripling the life expectancy in the U.S. between 1850 and 1990.
Before AIDS/After AIDS
Prior to the emergence of AIDS/HIV in 1981, few law professors were interested in public health. It was seen as an intellectual backwater, limited to bad dogs, septic tanks, and other unromantic topics. While every state and big city health department had a lawyer who did public health law, this lawyer usually worked for the city legal department or the state attorney general's office. Public health law was the bottom rung on the career ladder in these departments. The most junior person would do public health law until the next new hire came on board. Pre-AIDS, there was little institutional expertise in public health law in either law schools or state and local agencies.

Debra Kalmuss and Alayne M. Adams This couple-based, longitudinal study combines qualitative and quantitative approaches to data collection. The qualitative phase consists of in-depth interviews with 30 Latino heterosexual couples (interviewed separately) at baseline and at 3 and 6 months post-baseline. In the quantitative phase, a-CASI interviews are administered to 300 Latino couples at the same time intervals described above, and baseline interviews with 100 Latino women who meet all study eligibility requirements but who decline participation in the couple study. There are many ways that disabilities affect students' abilities to learn. Disabilities and learning styles are unique to individuals. Many accommodations are simple, creative alternatives for traditional ways of doing things. Following are examples and suggestions. They are by no means comprehensive. You and your students will have opportunities to generate additional uniquely effective ideas.
Low Vision
By "low vision" we are referring to people who have visual impairments but have some usable sight. This includes some students who are "legally" blind. For students who have low vision, standard written materials may be too small to read and/or objects may appear blurry. Others may only see objects within a specific field of vision. Still others see images with sections missing or blacked out. Learning via a visual medium may take longer and may be more mentally fatiguing for people who have low vision than for people who have standard vision. Examples of accommodations for students with low vision include large print books, handouts, signs, and equipment labels. Many photocopy machines can enlarge text.
