Teaching Phases
Teaching and Learning Index Phase I Health and Normality The ethos of phases I and II is to stimulate consideration of definitions and meanings of health and the factors that can influence this. Topics covered in Phase I include: health and normality, the influence of age on health, internal/psychological influences on health, social, economic and environmental influences on health. Tutorials led by GPs take place in the surgery, providing a novel setting for students, and allowing access to patients for the first time in the undergraduate curriculum. As well as the home visiting parts of the courses, patients are brought to the surgery to assist with the teaching. It is important that this course aims to develop ‘clinical attitudes’ as well as clinical skills, and this mix of locations, tutors and patients optimises this. Assessment employs a range of techniques aiming to test students’ ability to work and research productively both individually and as part of a team. It includes MEQs and group projects, and involves an element of peer marking. The aim is for assessment to be as useful to students as it is to assessors, and to develop skills for use throughout their careers, such as report writing, research presentation and team working. Phase II Illness, Disease and Disability

Undergraduate Teaching Overview
The Department of General Practice and Primary Care has provided teaching for medical undergraduate students in all five years of their course for many years. In common with other UK medical schools the University of Aberdeen has responded to the GMC publication ‘Tomorrow’s Doctors’ by developing a new curriculum which is student centred, has a reduced factual content and a stronger emphasis on teaching within the Community. The Community Course Phase I and Phase II Teaching in Phases I and II is delivered as part of the Community Course. This course, entitled "Humans in Society", is run jointly by six departments: Child Health, General Practice and Primary Care, Medicine for the Elderly, Mental Health, Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Public Health. In Phase I, the course focuses on "Health and Normality", and in Phase II it moves to "Illness, Disease and Disability". See below for further details The Community Course recognises a pattern of medical care that renders medicine in the community of increasing importance to medical students. Changes contributing to this include:

U.S. Surgeon General Gives Tips to Fathers and Fathers-To-Be:
Father's Day Tips for a Healthy Childhood
From babyhood into the college years, kids look to dads for love and guidance. And for Father's Day, U.S. Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., is offering dads advice to make their jobs more successful — a dozen tips for keeping children healthy and safe. This is the third in a series of "Healthy Dozen Tips" that Dr. Carmona will release as part of "The Year of the Healthy Child" agenda. The previous tips are all available at www.surgeongeneral.gov "On this Father's Day we want to thank all fathers, especially those celebrating their first Father's Day, who work so hard to provide love and support for their children. I know from experience the difficult challenges fatherhood brings. But I also know the great joy and pride that comes from being a dad. We at the Office of the Surgeon General want to take this opportunity to thank fathers and fathers-to-be for caring enough to practice these 'Healthy Dozen' tips that can help ensure a safe and healthy life for their growing children," Dr. Carmona said. "I've declared this ‘The Year of the Healthy Child' for the Office of the Surgeon General," Carmona said. "Each phase of a child's life has its own series of potential hazards, and we're shining a light on preventing those illnesses, injuries, and deaths that are preventable. By appreciating what parents do every day and getting the best information out to parents and children, I hope that every child will grow up healthy, happy, and able to reach their own potential."

U.S. Surgeon General Celebrates “World No Tobacco Day 2005” as Part of
“The Year of The Healthy Child”
Children don’t enter this world as smokers — they are taught to do it. Caring adults must teach kids to never try tobacco. To commemorate “World No Tobacco Day 2005,” U.S. Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., today outlined 10 tips to prevent children from being exposed to second-hand smoke and from becoming tobacco users themselves. These tips are part of a series of health advisories that Dr. Carmona is issuing during “The Year of the Healthy Child.” “I’ve declared this ‘The Year of the Healthy Child’ for the Office of the Surgeon General to encourage everyone to help keep children healthy and safe, from pre-birth through their teen years,” Dr. Carmona said. “On ‘World No Tobacco Day,’ which this year highlights the role of health professionals in tobacco control, it is only appropriate that I focus on one important way to protect our children’s health — prevent them from being exposed to tobacco smoke.” Every year, more than 400,000 Americans die from smoking-related illnesses, still the leading preventable cause of death in the United States.

DACP Teaching Programs The Department of Ambulatory Care and Prevention sponsors a wide range of high-quality teaching programs that provide continuous learning experiences for clinicians from their undergraduate through their active practice years, covering a range of health professions disciplines - medicine, nursing, social work, mental health, and the graduate programs of Harvard University, especially Harvard School of Public Health. Faculty members focus on primary and preventive care, clinical faculty development, and the competencies of managing care. DACP's educational programs are grounded in the belief that clinicians should be educated in the types of settings where they will eventually practice. Most faculty of the Teaching Center also are active in research programs in medical education or other areas of interest. DACP faculty both lead and teach in educational programs.  Most programs are local and depend on clinicians in Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates and in the community; there are   several national and international programs as well. Teaching Center faculty are supported by the HPHC foundation and by a large set of external funders.

5th Medical Year
The 5th Year course consists of three complementary elements. Each element informs the skills and knowledge to be gained from the other elements.
  • Lecture Course

  • A series of lectures is delivered to the entire 5th year class on one day each week throughout the Michaelmas and Hilary terms. The lectures, delivered by core staff and externally based staff give the students information on a wide range of subjects including: epidemiology, aspects of public health, demography and health economics.
  • Small Group Attachments

  • This element of the 5th year programme consists of a series of seminars delivered over six calendar months to six groups of students varying in group size from 11 to 19 students with each group attached for one of the months. Subjects covered include epidemiology, public health, clinical skills relevant to general practice and communicating with patients. Role players are employed to act out patient roles which might present in the general practice setting, with each of the students having the opportunity to be the doctor who is looking after the patient.
  • General Practice Attachments

  • Within the small group programme each student will spend four days on an individual attachment to a general practitioner based in the Dublin area and four days attachment to one based outside of the Dublin area. This provides the student with the opportunity of experiencing health care delivery in the community (both urban and rural) including out of hours care. The attachments are task based and the students are required to complete practice logs during the attachments.

In this case on genome privacy, students work together to research one of six assigned lobbying groups' views in this area and then present their groups' position before a mock meeting of a U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee as they consider voting on the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act. In working through the case, students learn about single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), common molecular biology techniques, and current legislation governing genome privacy. The case was developed for use in an introductory biology course entitled "Genes, Evolution, and Development." It could be readily adapted for a genetics or molecular biology course. Why Sex Is Good

    Risk Education
The new general teaching requirement for health and safety
This statutory statement applies to science, design and technology, information and communication technology, art and design, and physical education. When working with tools, equipment and materials, in practical activities and in different environments, including those that are unfamiliar, pupils should be taught:
    • about hazards, risks and risk control; to recognise hazards, assess consequent risk and take steps to control the risks to themselves and others; to use information to assess the immediate and cumulative risks; to manage their environment to ensure the health and safety of themselves and others; to explain the steps they take to control risks.
In addition to this general teaching requirement for the five subjects, the programmes of study for each subject contain specific teaching requirements on health and safety.
    Guidance
    1. This new health and safety requirement was drawn up by the QCA after consultation with the Health and Safety Executive. The review of the national curriculum provided an opportunity to reconsider how the concept of risk is taught.
