161. Your Child's Health/Health Alert/Sinus Wars
Children's Medical Center of Dallas publication advises parents on diverse topics on caring for children, including when various symptoms require a physician's attention.
http://www.yourchildshealth.com/halert/sinus.html
Do you know why we have sinuses? Don’t feel bad if you don’t. The experts also are puzzled about why we have four pairs of empty, air-filled cavities in the face, and why they cause so many problems. But doctors do know how sinuses function. Lined by the same type of mucous membranes that coat the back of your throat, your sinuses take in air and drain out mucus containing germs and debris. Children often are plagued by sinus problems. Factors that affect your child’s sinuses include allergies, family history, infection, pollution and secondhand smoke. These problems may contribute to each other. For instance, a child is more likely to develop sinus trouble if one or both parents tend to be congested, explains Dr. Vanthaya Gan, a pediatrician on staff at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. Exposure to allergens and second-hand smoke can make your child more susceptible to sinusitis, an inflammation and infection that can cause pain and swelling on the side of the face, the bridge of the nose and under the eyes. Look for a fever of over 101 degrees, thick, colored discharge, fatigue or a cold that is not getting better after 10-14 days, says Dr. Gan. “If your child has these symptoms, you should take him or her to a doctor,” says Dr. Gan.

Sherry Brinkman is a car buff. She's won awards for her meticulously appointed, blue MACH 1 Mustang. She admires its speed and its sleek lines. Turns out, speed is something she values in other things. It's easy to see why people gravitate to 5-year-old Savannah Williams. Not only is the Cover Girl adorable, she's got spunk - a topsy turvy, beyond-her-years way of being that lights up a room. A year ago, Savannah got sick. Or, in Savannah's words, 'I was in major big trouble.'

Getting the most out of your travels means staying healthy. "Healthy Travel Africa" is a user-friendly guide to minimizing health risks for travelers to all parts of Africa, including Egypt.
There are numerous illness and diseases throughout Africa and many of them have similar symptoms. With most of the more serious diseases, vaccinations have been developed as a form of protection. Some vaccinations can have different side effects on different people, but if you are travelling to Africa you should always obtain specialist advice from your physician or travel clinic. Many countries have clinics that specialise in tropical diseases. The risk of contracting a number of the diseases can be greatly reduced if you are careful about where and what you eat and drink and who you come into direct contact with.
