And the means to achieve it lie within each person, rather than in global remedies and panaceas which, in my view, are dangerous and threaten our collective good health. In so far as each of us has a different constitution, remedies must always be related to individual human beings, adjusted to match each physiology and psychology". Shyam's way of speaking cut through the nonsense. Kind and truely altruistic, I found a deep feeling of security in his company.

In remote villages in Ethiopia, travelling health care workers give preschool children vitamin A capsules to protect them from blindness and to make them more resistant to the serious effects of many childhood diseases. In Colombia, doctors travel by dug-out canoe to bring drugs, medical equipment, and services like immunization and emergency surgical support to 40,000 people in riverside communities. Women in Pakistan train to become nurses and Lady Health Visitors, so they can help other women in remote areas learn about safe water and sanitation, safe motherhood, and care of their children, as well as administer drugs for communicable diseases such as tuberculosis. In Afghanistan, volunteers travel from mosque to mosque, immunizing children in an annual seven-day vaccination campaign. In Ghana, local farming families learn about sustainable farming practices, so they can grow enough food for themselves and their communities.
