MIGRAINE HEADACHE STUDY
carried out at
Loma Linda University
School of Public Health
During 1994-96, a migraine headache study was conducted in California at the Loma Linda University's School of Public Health. This study showed that a low-fat, high-complex-carbohydrate diet can dramatically lower the frequency, intensity, and duration of migraine headaches. The following text provides a brief overview of the study and its results. For a personal consulation by Dr. Zuzana Bic, primary atuhor of the study, please visit: Lifestyle Medicine over the Phone

ORGANIZATION OF THE STUDY
The study was conducted over a 12-week period and was divided into three 4-week segments. The first was called the baseline period . During this time, patients were asked not to change anything in their eating or other habits, but to keep detailed food and headache diaries. The purpose was to collect data that could be compared to data gathered at the end of the study. The first intervention was done at the end of the baseline period. This was an individual consultation with each patient lasting one hour and focused on his or her diary. Based on a computer-aided nutritional evaluation, patients were given reading materials and were individually counseled on specific strategies for changing their eating habits. The objective was to reduce their fat consumption to 20-30 grams per day, or approximately 10-15% of their total calories. Blood tests and other measurements were performed. Patients were then asked to continue keeping their headache and food diaries for the remainder of the experiment.

Sponsored by Kirchner Headache Clinic Dr. Kirchner developed the Kirchner Headache Clinic after years of study and research on his own Classical Migraine . His goals were to focus on headache education and research to be able to help the thousands of people who are unable to find help with their headaches. His wife also suffers from disabling attacks of migraine. Through both study and personal experience, Dr. Kirchner realized that people who do not have migraine are not able to comprehend the devastation that this disease can cause. Personally, Dr. Kirchner was losing too much time from the care of patients due to migraine attacks. No longer does Dr. Kirchner have attacks severe enough to lose work because he learned to quickly stop his attacks. As a result of his experience, Dr. Kirchner wants to help as many patients as possible that suffer from headaches. The treatment program he uses is modeled after the procedures developed by several fellow members of the American Headache Society and the International Headache Society . These treatment protocols are very effective for the majority of headache sufferers.

Director of the Headache Unit, Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, New York
Professor of Neurology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, New York How common are headaches? The head is the most common site of pain (headache), and almost everyone has experienced a headache. Ninety percent of men and 95 percent of women have had at least one headache during the past year. What kinds of headaches are there? Ninety percent of headaches are what we call "primary headaches," that is the pain is due to changes in blood vessels or biochemistry within the head. Fortunately only 10 percent of headaches are "secondary," that is due to structural disease in the head or disease of other parts of the body. The three primary headaches are tension-type, migraine, and cluster headache. Tension-type headaches (formerly called tension headaches) often occur in irregular episodes and are the most common. They are usually mild pains that people either ignore or take over-the-counter pain medication to alleviate. About 3 percent of the population suffers from chronic tension-type headaches, occurring almost every day. Migraine is the most common disabling headache. It affects 18 percent of women and 6 percent of men: more than 25 million people in this country. There are two main types of migraine: without aura (formerly called common migraine) and with aura (formerly called classical migraine). About 15 percent of people experience a neurological symptom before, and sometimes during, the migraine headache. This symptom is called the aura and frequently the person experiences flickering lights or some other disturbance of vision.
