Migraine Headache FAQs
What are migraine headaches?
Migraines are disabling headaches that most likely stem from problems with the nerves and blood vessels in the head. Migraine headaches typically last from 4-72 hours. They may occur as often as several times a week to only once a year. People who have migraines are called migraineurs. Migraine headaches affect about 15% of the population. Three times as many women as men have migraines. Over 80% of migraineurs have family members who have migraines. The following types of migraine headache have been identified:
  • Migraine without aura (common migraine): This type accounts for 80% of migraine headaches. There is no aura before a common migraine.
Migraine with aura (classic migraine): This type is usually preceded by an aura and is usually much worse than a common migraine. Most often, an aura is a visual disturbance (outlines of lights or jagged light images).
Status migrainosus: This is the term used to describe a long-lasting migraine that does not go away by itself.

Headaches: migraine
We don't fully understand all the causes of migraine headaches. We do know that they are related to changes in the blood flow within the vessels that supply blood to the head and brain. Migraines tend to run in families, and usually first show up in the teen or young adult years. They are more common in women and often occur during, or right before, a woman's menstrual period. A typical migraine causes a severe throbbing pain on one side of the head. The pain builds up during an attack and can last for several hours. Sometimes migraine pain covers both sides of the head and is a dull pain. Symptoms that accompany migraine headache include:
  • seeing stars, flashes or zigzags blurred vision photosensitivity (bright lights hurt the eyes) feeling sick to your stomach loss of appetite being at a loss for words numbness or tingling or weakness or clumsiness
A migraine headache can be triggered by:
  • stress lack of sleep skipping a meal using alcohol taking birth control pills changes in the weather chocolate red wine MSG food preservatives or caffeine
The changes or foods that bring on a migraine are likely to be different for each person. It helps to try to identify what happens before a migraine headache starts, what 'happens' to start the headache, and then try to avoid those things in the future. Counseling or relaxation techniques for reducing stress may be useful in preventing attacks.

Seymour Diamond, MD, Director, Diamond Headache Clinic Related Links Your Child's Headaches May Be Migraines Visit our Migraine Art Gallery Learn more about migraines in the Headache Center Index You Can Stop Your Migraine Headache Pain By Rita Mullin "Many migraineurs suffer needlessly," says Seymour Diamond, MD, director of the Diamond Headache Clinic and executive chairperson of the National Headache Foundation. A study conducted by the foundation in 1999 surveying migraine incidence and treatments over the preceding decade found little change in the way people treat their headaches. Ironically, during that same period, researchers made enormous strides in treating this debilitating headache that affects about 13 percent of the population. "Possibly the greatest discoveries of the last 40 years have occurred in this 10-year period," Dr. Diamond says. Why aren't doctors and patients taking advantage of these research strides? "Two things are happening: patients aren't going to their doctor, and the doctors aren't prescribing the newer medications." The survey found that the only medications that increased in rate of prescriptions during the decade were pain relievers. "People are still treating migraine in an old-fashioned way." Dr. Diamond blames the discrepancy between research and practice in the field, in part, on patients not seeking medical attention because they believe they must live with the pain. But the managed care system also shares the blame. "I think that managed care would rather promote an inexpensive pain-relieving drug than give them what I call a reversal drug, a drug that actually reverses what's happening when a person gets a migraine attack."

HEADACHES/MIGRAINE
"Oh, how densely packed your head is, my sweet," sighs Grandmother Growth. "I'm afraid there's no room for new growth. If you could empty your mind, leave off worrying and planning for a while, and give in to the chaos and its random pleasures, just for a short time, I think you'd feel less pressure and your head would hurt less. The energy of your womb now circulates inside you and throbs in your head. Sit quietly; breathe out through the top of your head and imagine the breath falling gently down to earth. Rest your forehead against the earth. Place this cool stone on your third eye. Your Crone's Crowning comes closer. This is the work of your body; let your mind rest." Step 0: Do Nothing " Follow your natural instinct: lie in total silence, in complete darkness, and sleep, if possible, until the headache is gone.

There are many approaches to migraine and other kinds of pulsating, throbbing pain. Here's one, called Deep Vascular Relaxation (DVR) that is a profoundly simple approach that we have used in our clinic since 1980. It uses a novel form of sensory awareness that is both simple, precise, and elegant, in very specific ways, to reduce or eliminate the throbbing pain. It doesn't work for everyone, but it can be a helpful tool in many instances. It is not presented as a cure for any disease or condition, but it can help. Please keep in contact with your physician or health care provider. Our website provides a test to help you see how useful this approach might be for you. digital mark

INFORMATION ABOUT
the use of
PULSING ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD THERAPY
for prevention of Migraine Headaches What "pulsing electromagnetic field generators are and do:
Pulsing electromagnetic field (PEMF) generators of the type used for prevention of migraine headaches provide high frequency electromagnetic energy fields so powerful they can light a 40 Watt bulb, but pulse so quickly they do not heat the body very much. These devices are not similar to magnets or battery powered stimulators which are far less powerful and work on very different principles. The machines have been in use for over thirty years and are normally used to decrease swelling (usually for sprained ankles), speed wound healing, and to heal broken bones which will not knit on their own. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given them marketing labels for these purposes. They have been shown to be safe and without any known negative side effects. Diapulse generators (Diapulse INC. of New York) produce pulsed high-frequency, high peak power electromagnetic energy at a frequency of 27.12 MHZ in 65 microsecond bursts occurring in 600 pulse per second sequences at 975 peak watts. A typical pulsing electromagnetic field generator: How the treatment may work: When PEMFs are used to prevent migraine headaches, the device is pointed at the inner thighs. We think that the device works because it increases blood flow to the legs. This causes a known reflex which decreases blood flow in the brain's "central cerebral" arteries. Most people with simple migraine headaches have too much blood flow in these cerebral arteries. When the amount of blood flow is reduced to normal, migraines do not occur as often. Thus, the device probably works by decreasing blood flow in these brain arteries.

A True Help for Migraine Headaches associated with Menstrual Cycles
Migraine Headaches Associated with the Menstrual Cycle usually Preceeding Menstruation Now, Time magazine has cited the landmark study of 17,000 girls aged 8. 15% of these girls are going through early puberty and sprouting breast buds and pubic hair. The Time magazine cover story, October 30, 2000, cites that some chemicals mimic estrogen and blames these chemicals for the early growth spurt of girls and early puberty. Ranchers also give estrogen to cattle and farmers give estrogen to chicken with the full knowledge that the estrogen will cause the animal to grow and mature faster. The chemical manufacturers and ranchers claim that the estrogen will wash out of the animals system in 3 days. However, estrogen is fat soluble and some scientists feel that it may take as long as a year for the synthetic estrogen to wash out of the animal's system. The European Union claims that giving estrogen to animals and then eating the meat may increase the breast cancer rate and refuses to buy Canadian and United States meat. Critics of the European Union say that this is merely protectionist. Or is it? Migraine headaches associated with the menstural cycle are also associated with Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS).

Editorial Migraine treatment and mistreatment: primum non nocere Triptans can provide wonderful relief from migraine, but must not be overused as "pseudo-preventives" MJA
If the 1990s was the decade of the brain for neuroscientists, then it was the decade of new treatments and renewed hope for sufferers of neurological diseases. Neurology, long the bastion of diagnosis, has become the specialty of the physician that we would all like to be one who is able to take a careful history and conduct a meticulous physical examination leading to a diagnosis and management plan. For headache patients, and perhaps neurological patients in general, it is the latter development in neurology, the move to more effective management of the conditions, that has been truly marvellous. We have started to identify the genes involved in causing the problem, and by so doing have begun to understand the episodic nature of the attacks in terms of ion-channel dysfunction. We have finally begun to image the primary headaches with functional/anatomical methods that have pointed to the brainstem, in migraine, and the posterior hypothalamus, in cluster headache
